And the moment of truth has arrived. Bethesda has just confirmed that the PC version of The Evil Within will be locked at 30fps, though the company will provide some debug options via which players will be able to unlock the framerate. Now this is good and bad news.
The good news is that there will be a workaround to bypass this framerate limitation. The bad news is that – and especially given the game’s official requirements – this may very well turn into another Dead Rising 3.
As Bethesda stated:
“Shinji Mikami and the team at Tango designed The Evil Within to be played at 30fps and to utilize an aspect ratio of 2.35:1 for all platforms. The team has worked the last four years perfecting the game experience with these settings in mind. For PC players, we’ll provide debug commands on how you can alter the framerate and aspect ratio, but these commands and changes are not recommended or supported and we suggest everyone play the game as it was designed and intended for the best experience.”
So there you have it. A game designed and intended to be played at 30fps for the ‘best experience’.
Hilarious stuff to say the least!

it’s because a lot of motion capture tech is limited to 30fps, that’s why LA Noire was also capped at 30
They chose to capture at that due to the consoles. the game runs great at 60
That’s not a very compelling reason, though. Interpolating the “frames” that aren’t motion captured is pretty easy and probably yields very good results since humans generally move their bodies very smoothly (most of the time we aren’t even able to move our body parts in the time frame of one 30th of a second).
yes on la noire since that was face perfomances no on actual graphics, cod does motion capture more than anyone and its 60 fps.
its scripts like i said above if i disabled vsync in dead space 3 the framerate goes to 60 which makes some of the doors not open.
One word, pathetic.
might look like , but they won’t rewrite half of code just for PC version alone, its made with consoles and 30fps in mind so… but just like DR3 its gonna work fine at 60fps after unlock i can bet.. PC is their least profitable market so they don’t really care about delivering top of the line ports , its like that with 90% of companies these days..
its just a “take it or leave it” port , they obviously didn’t intended for PC version to sell millions of copies
Don’t make it locked to 30 fps at the first place.
but , consoles? this game was made for consoles , PC wasn’t in their minds its Japan developer
If you are going to release it for PC at the same time then it’s also made for PC.
So you say we should just accept a half-baked version? I prefer a good working pc version, if that’s not the case I simply don’t buy it.
im very biased towards this game and Mikami so yea, but i don’t think its acceptable for guys like you or somebody else. at least there is option to unlock , i hope for it to work fine as i would love 60fps too.. not like it’s gonna be completely unplayable
I have not seen a worst port in my whole life. Instead of delaying the game and getting someone to do a proper port they make a disaster. This game could sell with proper support, it is a horror game pc is full of them.
30fps is part of that horror xD , yea i wouldn’t mind few days/weeks for better optimization , but its for PC only so who cares 😀
thumbs up for that reffrence.
You mean like TES/Skyrim didn’t sell millions of the PC version? You mean like The Witcher series didn’t sell well, oh only 6 million copies.
CDP has done good with TW2 , 1 wasn’t much good tech wise but it could pass. But bethesda is another story , and Japanese dev is yet another one. Skyrim was really good game , but crap x360 port that got better over time , but still it requires one of better CPUs to run at 60fps locked
Yes because Skyrim is very CPU bound.
The worst part of the forum post is that they say if you don’t have 4GB vram, you won’t be able to play at 1080p. That is what’s really pathetic.
BEYOND pathetic.
I am not buying this period.
The only thing it lacks is a crappy mouse aiming and always online drm.
This game in the latest trailer has fallout 3 quality textures.
This was my game of the year 2014, now its my GARBAGE -OF THE YEAR of 2014.
If the game ends up flopping or the gameplay isnt survival horror as advertized, no one will buy this.
Also idtech 5 should die in flames.
Yeah the textures weren’t good and it still requires 4GB or vram on ultra or something? I hate that beshesda has their name on this even though they didn’t actually make it.
what i want to know is who made it, seems like the devs didnt make the pc version either.
How could it of been your game of the year if you haven’t even played it?
Because its a proper survival horror that takes some skill, or so they say maybe the game flops.
2:35:1 film ratio..I wonder why the didn’t use the ”cinematic” 24FPS(23.976)..
I consider to myself to be a total frame junkie and will never settle for 30fps so with that said I’ll just say ‘Adieu to this game.
I am sure rendering at 60fps taking twice the horsepower at the same quality level graphics has nothing to do with console developers designing their games around the bare minimum of 30fps to achieve filmic feel.
“Filmic” feel = We can’t achieve 60fps. Games are not films, that’s what we have films for, duh. :p
You remembered my comment from over 3 months ago. Nice.
Must be script based. Dead space 3 with vsync is 30 fps, if i disable it some doors wont open. Some missions in gta san andreas cannot be completed if you disable the framerate limiter.
Wow, absolutely disgusting!
Canceled pre-order (thanks GMG!), I will no longer even consider buying this.
Nice avatar pic dude, Agnostic Front are awesome.
2nd best album ever, next to Leeway’s Born to Expire.
Well, you lost my business. Good job. This really sucks too as I was really excited about a new horror game but alas, I must vote with my wallet to voice my displeasure with the decisions your company makes.
A lot of you new to the PC gaming world just think about FPS way to much… This is a horror filmic game. 30fps will be wonderful on it. If you even think you need 60 well I guess you don’t play enough games like this.
And before you go off saying 30fps next to 60fps is garbage well yes when it comes to certain games it is that are meant to be ran at 60.
As far as I’m concerned 30fps doesn’t work with almost anything. Some times it’s tolerable, other times 30fps games gave me a headache after playing for 15 minutes (the problem disappeared once I found unofficial patches to get it up to 60fps). I’ve played countless games in my life, many of them horror games, and I cannot recall a single one where I thought that 30fps was a better choice than 60.
Thankfully they’ve added the option to switch to different frame rates, although not officially supporting it is a d**k move.
simply put thanks to x360 and ps3 holding graphics back reaching 60 fps was easy and we got used to it, now its just annoying.
This game should run both on pcs and consoles 60 fps, the graphics are awful.
HFR is the future. But we’re getting this sh*t in 2014. Stop making excuses for them. They think I have SLI 780Tis and want to settle on 30fps?
This isn’t a damn movie we’re watching. It’s a video game. There’s a huge difference.
say that when the game comes out… till then you just don’t get it.
Doesn’t matter if it’s a survival horror game. An RPG, an RTS, etc. Bottom line is….30fps looks and runs like a*s. It’s an inferior experience on any system.
The games that “work” at 30fps are 2D games that have no camera control IE.. South Park Stick Of Truth or Limbo. As soon as a camera is introduced, 30fps feels like absolute jittery sluggish garbage using a mouse. It’s you that doesn’t get it.
yeah we will see how the final product turns out. till then it’s all speculation.
A 30fps lock on a game with camera movement being complete garbage is not speculation, and I don’t need to wait to see how it turns out. I don’t need to pour boiling water on myself to know it turns out… I know it’s going to hurt.
Any game with motion that isn’t based on being a cartoon will benefit from 60 fps. On all platforms. There things aren’t speculations, these things are facts.
30 fps next to 60 fps is garbage, but guess what, 30 fps without it being next to 60 fps is still garbage, there isn’t some magic that changes this.
60 fps is about animations, feeling fluid and responsive. Why do you think RE4 was re-released on PC with 60 fps as a big selling point? Because it made them feel cool? Stop falling for marketing bs about the cinematic feel. Soon enough, movies will have a higher then games standard frame rate, finding excuses for 30 fps is pathetic.
Well from what I just seen it’s the best 30fps game dealing with survival horror… Not that, that is saying much.
But now that I did more digging on the game it seems like it was designed for ps3/xbox360 with ps4/xbox1 in mind. And it uses idtech engine 5 which is just a disaster to me. Oh well if it’s fun that’s all that matter’s right?
I just think it’s funny because when I was a kid playing Atari 2600 we did not cry about frames per second… eh
“I just think it’s funny because when I was a kid playing Atari 2600 we did not cry about frames per second… eh”
Right, because at that time we had a well stabilished basis of gaming technology.
While I do agree with the “having fun” part of it and that sometimes we overly critize the design choices, the people designing those bloody things must understand that they are making things for different kinds of individuals, different feelings, different approaches.
Not giving the freedom for these people to choose are just nonsense.
When we were younger standards was lower, as we didn’t have better, it don’t mean we shouldn’t move forward.
Higher frame rates, beside animations and the game feeling more fluid, have a big advantage, and that is reduced eye strain over prolonged times playing. Taking breaks is all fine and well, but you shouldn’t get physical annoyances due to stupid “design” decision.
30 fps games isn’t really a thing on PC. I can excuse it, if the PC version wasn’t in mind from the developer in the first place, and was later decided to be ported, but this has had a PC version all along.
iD Tech 5 is a pretty good engine, this is all on the developer, they basically the only one to blame here. We could try to put the blame on the publisher, but Bethesda have proven them self to be pretty PC friendly, and all their games are superior on PC, beside this game for some… I don’t even know.
I won’t be buying it, not because the game it self is bad, but because what they are doing to the version I’d buy is bad. 30 fps is pretty much the standard on consoles, but it isn’t on PC, they need to follow the minimum standards on the platform you choose to release on, and it’s our job, the consumer to make sure they do, by not supporting stupidity.,
well ps2/xbox games were 60 fps for the most part.
Seems we’re not in the same age group, most PC gamers wanted 60 fps by the time the PS2 was out and a few years before. When it comes to consoles with 60 fps, the only console who had 60 fps games for the most part is the Dreamcast and the Wii, the PS2 had a bunch, but compared to the amount of games on that console it wasn’t very many.
Judging by emulators id say most ps2 games were 60 fps not a bunch.
30 fps didn’t work in LA noire. 30 FPS didn’t work in Black flag. 30 fps didn’t work in NFS…why should it work in Evil Within?
dead space 3 with vsync is 30 fps, felt like the game lagged, i disabled it and some doors didnt open unless i alt tab the game
I get the 30 fps is hardscripted but 60 is always better.
You tell other people to wait and see how the final product turns out because it’s all speculation until then. And then you say things like “30fps will be wonderful on it” and speculate yourself. Bit of a double standard.
you wont get get above 30 fps with those requirments anyway but the game has so many problems that it screams “hey moron this game is not working properly it is broke dont buy it”
had the game had logical requirments and be locked at 30 fps, we wouldnt mind, we would just unlock it, but this game has
-insane requirments
-awful graphics
-30 fps lock
-an infamous broken engine
-quite possibly crappy pc controls
Its garbage. I feel sorry for the poor souls who bought this and the season pass for 80$.
Haha…30fps. No thanks.
That’s so 2006.
unlike most PC gamers, i don’t mind playing a third person game at 30fps especially if it means i can go all out on eye candy,. rock solid 30 fps is sufficient to enjoy most non-competitive games smoothly. however, messed up aspect ratios i cannot forgive. hopefully forcing it run in full screen aspect doesn’t screw the game up.
For me 30 fps is the minimun number… you cant go below that without feeling dizy while playing.
Its at least an awful digit… its the minimun.
I would not call that rock solid.
I can accept a locked frame rate… but not less that 45 fps. No way in hell. No on pc
I kind of agree with you. 30 FPS isn’t half bad but not good either. it’s ok only if the game is well optimized
Thats beqouse you are a F*CKN IDIOT!
Go back to your toybox DIPSHIT!
And GTFO, we DONT want to hear crap like this, F*CKN LOOSER!
You can get past 1-2 things but this game……the requirments alone for 30 fps are beyond insane.
This all could have been avoided if they used another engine say like unreal engine 4. Oh well might get it later on sale but have no interest at paying full price for a console port.
I’m sorry, but get your head on your body, because your body is currently speaking nonsense. The issue is the developer, not the engine. The engine is actually pretty f’ing great.
Tango Gameworks: Oh, let’s modifiy this ID Tech 5 engine! Even if we have no f’ing clue what we’re doing.
Put the blame in the right places. Stop randoming it around.
F* them f*rs! Hopefully people will cancel their preorders and get the game when it’s 75% off. Damn! An promising horror game ruined by 30 FPS lock and an idiotic aspect ratio. Cinematic experience my a*s! F*rs!
“(…)we suggest everyone play the game as it was designed and intended for the best experience.”
Right, because everyone have exaclty the same experience.
..dayONE! At most certainly that I will have difficulty to play it at maxsettings so probrabily at 29 to 30FPS…
so I dont care!
these requirments to play under 30 fps are screaming “hey moron this game is not working properly it is broken dont buy it” They couldnt have said it any clearer.
29-30FPS at 4k gaming!
No 1080p 4gb vram 30 fps thats waht they said.
thats ridiculous then! imagine what 4k would require then!
I dont think it supports 4k.
Garbage port.
So they think that everyone LIKES their “cinematic” crap idea ,which by the way is pure horses**t because they dont give a f’ about the cinematic s**t ,they’re only doing that because the game is a port from old gen.
When I watched this game for the first time . I thought its minimum requirements will be :
Core 2 Duo processor
1 GB Ram
512 MB Geforce 8800GT video card
8 GB Hard Disk
Then I woke up and saw how terribly optimized this game is going to be and not only that but now it is also locked at 30fps 🙁
I was looking forward to this game . Hopefully things aren’t going to be as bad as they look .
look at the last trailer those are fallout 3 textures.
Asking for i7 and 4gb for 30 fps?
This game screams “hey moron this game is broken and wont work properly dont buy it”
-idtech5
-30 fps
-insane requirments
-black lines
-possibly broken aiming and pc controls.
Yeah, i would pay for a FIXED version by modders but not for this.
to me it’s recommended looks like that :))
Yeah, even film is moving to high frame rates now. Although HFR in the cinema currently means 48FPS (but not Hz, don’t conflate the two.. the projectors tend to be 60Hz per eye)… meaning 2x the old standard… so that both eyes can get the full 24FPS perhaps… They are talking about moving onto 60FPS and beyond in the future..
Funny thing is as someone else mentioned 30FPS isn’t the old cinematic standard… 24FPS is. 30FPS is more like old NTSC TV standard.
They should just admit that the 30FPS cap is for the benefit of consoles which don’t have the horsepower for the same game at 60FPS.
Also, games should just not be locked to one aspect ratio… if you want 2:35:1 film ratio or the monitor equivalent 21:9 then get a damned 21:9 monitor or projector with anamorphic lens (or native support if you can afford it)! 😛
> so that both eyes can get the full 24FPS perhaps…
That’s … not how it works. Frames aren’t “split up” between your eyes. Both of your eyes see the same picture updating 24 (or 48, or 60, or whatever) times per second.
I was talking about in 3D stereovision where two views are drawn on the screen and polarized for polarized lenses.
Pls do yourself a favor and do not buy this game.
Don’t care about PC because of low sales? Guess why you will have low sales… Also the PC market profits are greater than consoles combined.
Sure i’ll play and judge afterwards. If they have perfected the game with these settings in mind, then i’m willing to try. I’m not sure why they would go down to such framerate and try to make it work, unless the game is directly bounded to it (which is an amateurish mistake).
I am very excited for the survival gameplay but by the looks of it the pc version is garbage, it wont even run properly it will be full of problems. If i was you i would get a console.
I’m not getting a ps4 or one to play this game, i have all previous console but i don’t intend to get The evil within on either of them. I’ll let you know how well it runs when I have completed it.
completed? it is a long game.
I was so excited for this.
Well yeah completed the main story you could say, I don’t expect to discover all secrets in my first play through – if this kind of game were very common, then i might not have been interested in this but since it is from the creator of Resident evil, I have to play it no matter how bad or unoptimised it is. I will not let graphics or performance stand in my way when i’m hungry for gore and horror atmosphere.
same but this screams “Broken” to me.
F*CKN MORONS!
Dont buy this crap, I will PIRATE this SH*IT and i suggest you to do the same!
Show these fa**ots that we will NOT take cr*p like this!
We’re bringing out Captain Picard a lot recently and for good reason.
yeah real great engine that doesn’t support SLI..
Nah its GARBAGE.
Thank you $0N¥, your peasant box is sooo great for the industry. Blaming it all on Xbox One when your console is just as SH*T!
Teh engine is garbage and they modified it to death.
There is NOTHING great about idtech 5 is a subpar lackluster engine with opengl.
30FPS and all this bulls*** about, it’s not a problem we can deal with it, but this insane requirements??? that’s what makes this game so pathetic. i’ll wait for DSOG PC Performance Analysis. and i really hope to hear something positive.
I agree that the developers are the problem, yet id tech 5 was,is crap any way.
