YouTube’s ‘Unreal Gaming PC’ has shared a video showcasing Driveclub running at 120FPS on PC via a special fork of shadPS4. This is the first time I’ve seen Driveclub run this smoothly on any platform.
To capture this gameplay footage, the YouTuber used an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080. Moreover, he included some performance overlay stats, which can help identify what’s going on.
The latest version of shadPS4, version 0.19.1, can run the game at 60FPS, and it can drop to the 40s in some demanding stages. GPU utilization is around 47%, and CPU utilization hits 27%. This shows a huge CPU/RAM bottleneck.
And then we have the GR2fork EXODUS special build. With the same PC setup, the game runs at 120FPS, with its more demanding tracks running at 80FPS. GPU and CPU usage jump to 74% and 56%, respectively.
As we can see, there is still room for improvement. However, the performance difference between these two builds is already huge. Moreover, this build is available to everyone. So, if you’ve always wanted to play Driveclub, you can download the GR2fork EXODUS build of shadPS4 and enjoy it. And no, you won’t need a high-end GPU in order to enjoy it.
I don’t know if this special fork of shadPS4 uses AI. I also don’t know if the team behind shadPS4 is willing to use AI. Given what we’ve seen with KyTyPS5, though, I strongly believe that the team should implement it.
Now, look, I’m not saying they should rely solely on AI. What I’m saying is that they can use AI to speed up development. I know very well that optimizing an emulator can be a pain. With AI, the shadPS4 team can pinpoint problem areas and bottlenecks that need to be fixed. They can also use AI to fix graphical bugs and glitches that can occur in many games.
All in all, I am really excited about the future of shadPS4. Right now, you can play Driveclub at a steady 60 FPS. From what I know, there are no major crash issues either. So, if you have always wanted to play Driveclub, this may be the best time to try it. The high frame rate is also a big plus. Even today, the PS4 version is still locked to 30 FPS.
Before I wrap up, I would not be surprised if we see unofficial PC ports of The Order: 1886 and Driveclub. These ports could be based on shadPS4, much like the Bloodborne PC port. The good news is that such ports could make both games much easier to run on PC. They could also add proper PC controls and in-game graphics options. A PC launcher could bring even more modern features. This could make these games feel much more at home on PC.
Enjoy and stay tuned for more!
