At the TGA 2024 event, CD Projekt RED shared the first cinematic trailer for The Witcher 4. And, surprisingly enough, CDPR claimed that it used an “unannounced NVIDIA graphics card” for this trailer. In other words, they used an NVIDIA RTX 5090.
Now before going bananas, this is a pre-rendered trailer. As the press release reads, the cinematic trailer is pre-rendered in a custom build of Unreal Engine 5 on an unannounced NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPU. So no, this isn’t an in-engine trailer. It does not also showcase what the game will look like. Still, I’m surprised CDPR used an NVIDIA RTX 5090 for it.
The Witcher 4 is an upcoming single-player open-world RPG and the beginning of a new saga. It’s a follow-up to one of the most acclaimed RPGs of all time, TW3. In this game, players will assume the role of Ciri. Ciri will embark on her own journey to become a professional monster slayer.
Going into more tech details, the pre-rendered trailer is powered by the same tech that The Witcher IV is built on. It uses assets and models from the game itself, and it aims to provide players with a cinematic look at the kind of experience the game aspires to provide. The trailer was created through a close collaboration between CD PROJEKT RED and Platige Image.
In short, this is similar to the Gears of War: E-Day 2024 trailer. It’s pre-rendered with in-game assets. So, while the devs aim to come as close to it, it does not represent the quality of the final product.
There is currently no ETA on when TW4 will come out. Naturally, though, we’ll be sure to keep you posted.

The Witcher game trailers are always some of the best ever!
My issue is CDPR's trailers ALWAYS look great. But the smart money is on not allowing yourself to get hyped about a CDPR game. At least, not allowing yourself to get hyped about whatever they launch. Hopefully their switch to UE5 will actually help them in this matter, but basically every single one of their games have launched in varying states of unfinished. They've all needed months of updating before seeing their potential. Hopefully they break the trend with this one but definitely keeping expectations in check

People like to pretend that TW3 wasn't very buggy and unoptimized at launch, I avoided it until Blood and Wine was released, much more polished. And I'm still waiting for CP2077, probably the first I'll play when I buy a new graphics card.
People need to hold their horses when it comes to CDPR, great games but a year or even two after release, damn, even TW1 had a way better enhanced version after some time.

No they used a 5090 to create and render the video which is it's intended purpose as a "prosumer" graphics card. 4090's are already widely used for making professional videos while their secondary purpose is for gaming. That's why they have so much graphics memory, more than needed for just gaming. It's there to load assets to render videos that can't be done in real time. They are also quite capable for AI and LLMs because of all that memory. I sounds like the 5090 is going to have 32 GB of VRAM available and I doubt there will be any games that use more than 20 GB of it
Look, you don't need a 4090 or 5090 for creation nor pre-rendering of anything, nor they've existed before, nor you've needed them. They most likely use professional cards for creation and can do offline rendering in a render farm. They can use either, yeah, not necessary though.

Yes you do because time is money and a 4090 or a 5090 does what it does faster and no other graphics cards in the prosumer space have that much memory. Not many smaller video companies can afford a DGX array with 8 $35,000 A100 (or the new B100 and B200) GPUs. Leasing space isn't all that cheap either which is why the 4090s fly off the shelf and have kept their pricing above MSRP throughout their generational cycle.

If its really is a ctrl + C & ctrl + VVVVVVV type of game, I could see that since it basically is just Elden Ring with more assets nothing that requires a ton of new hardware and there are over 100 million PS4s and more XB1s than XS consoles so that could be an easy market to tackle without a commitment to a physical release.

Deductive reasoning. The 5090 is the only one with engineering samples available to board manufacturers at the time this video was starting to be produced which was probably 2-3 months ago. Full production of the 5090 and 5080 chips and engineering/production samples for the lower lines won't start until next month. I don't expect we'll see the 5090 available for sale until February 1 at the earliest. 4th quarter 2024 is booked for nothing but B100 and B200 chip production and those units were already sold before production even started.
If you thought Crypto miners were competition for gamers then take that times 10 for the mega-corporations demanding A100, B100 and B200 chips for AI cloud servers and supercomputers. Nvidia is going to concentrate on their largest most profitable markets and that ain't gamers that accounted for less than 1/3 of Nvidia's sales in 2024 and only 1/4 for their profits
