Deep Silver has announced that Dead Island 2 has hit a record ten million players. The game came out in April 2023, meaning that it took it almost one and a half years to hit that goal.
The milestone was reached on the same day that Dead Island 2 Ultimate Edition launched. The Ultimate Edition is a free upgrade to all Gold Edition owners, granting them access to all the content HELL-A has to offer.
Do note that these are not sale numbers. Dead Island 2 is available on Game Pass. This means that a lot of gamers were able to play it without buying it. So, while this is a huge milestone, it’s not a huge commercial success.
When the game launched, it sold one million copies in its first three days. Since then, though, Deep Silver has not revealed any other sale numbers.
Dead Island 2 was a game I really enjoyed. Moreover, it surprised me with its performance on the PC. In fact, it was one of the most optimized PC games of 2023. And get this. Not only did it run well but it also looked gorgeous. The devs used amazing pre-baked techniques. As such, the game looked amazing.
Deep Silver also stated that it will release free playable trial versions on Xbox and PlayStation. However, there is no word for a PC free trial as of yet.
I should also note that the game still uses Denuvo on PC. Since there aren’t any major performance issues or hitches, I’m fine with it.
Finally, the devs have not added yet native support for NVIDIA DLSS 3. The reason I’m mentioning this is because there is a mod that adds support for it. By using it, you can enjoy a superior image. Do note, though, that it does not bring support for DLSS 3 Frame Generation. This mod only replaces AMD’s FSR with NVIDIA’s DLSS 3.

So whenever these PR announcements for any game say they hit millions of players, that does not necessarily mean hit the players by selling them the game, it could be because of subscription services like Game Pass etc or the game could have been given away for free like the Epic Games Store etc.

That maybe the case in US, where I hear your ISPs run their businesses like organised crime gangs, with mutual agreement to screw over their customers within their own turfs and not actually compete with one another.
Other places in the world, high speed fibre with no data caps are common. So downloading 50 GBs on a lark is entirely reasonable.
I can download 50 gb just fine, but i have to mind HD space as well. i can download a small game of 1 gb and forget i even downloaded it, but a large game i would at least try it for a few minutes.
oh there's mostly just marketing to these "articles" by ai and it's def not just this site it's all of them. You're talking about the store like steam is in on it and of course the devs are in on it, the sites which all get money for passing this marketing along at the "ground roots" level are also in on it. We need to think more about everything "official" just being deceptive lawyerly talk with lots of small print no one reads and in cases like this there isn't any it's just straight out the axx stuff. "Xmillion bought this new big hyped game in xxhrs!"(so what are you waiting for you are missing out!!!). Zombies games are the vidya equivalent of that comfy fast food that you like. Are there better options? Probably. But you can't help it. Haven't played this one yet, though.

yeah there are some tropes here, to the "chosen" scum everyone not them is a zombie to be managed or sacrificed for thier goals as needed. One of the most hyped books and movies by them, gen z, was written nominally be mel brooks son and has a certain narrative about some virus from china that turns people into zombies. Of course israhel comes out pretty well to keep out the "goy-hoards" in the book at least. It's a motif of theirs like in some games the trolls of the bank in tw3 hoard gold-banksters. Then the high elves are kabbalistic tribescum. Lots of tribe idiosyncracies in their media complex, aka all of it.

I always skip the bla bla because i don't care,games are for Gameplay,Graphics and Audio experience,story…is there to have time to smoke a blunt while cinematics roll aka break time.

TLOU2 was same for me 9/10 game,skip cinematics not because i was ofended by the plot,but because i didn't care for it even in the first one.
RE4 remake and Silent Hill 2 remake i watched the cinematics but the rest since 2002,i never cared for thier story.
Maybe because i didn't understood english as a kid. From 2004 to 2008 i learned english for the first time,but only from 2018 till present i speak more fluid after spending 3 years in UK,so maybe that is why i skip cinematics.

Ok, so how does this argument works? how does a game benefits from being in this Game Pass if gamers don't "buy it"? They do pay for the service tough, so some of this money must go to the devs/publishers somehow…
Not much is known about Game Pass contracts. What is known is that the publisher gets money just to put the game on the service X time and the amount of money varies from game to game.
These sorts of announcements, eg talking about "engagement numbers" are about looking good to Boomer investors. Such investors might not know exactly what these sort of figures actually mean and/or won't look into it.
