Doom 2 Ray-Traced looks even better with RTX Remix Renderer

Earlier this week, we shared an amazing Path Tracing Mod for Doom 2. But, what if I told you that you can make Doom 2 Ray-Traced look even better? Well you see, its modder has also released an experimental RTX Remix Renderer. And as you will see, it looks incredible.

As shirokii said, RTX Remix creates a fully path-traced image with more complex light interactions. It also makes the picture much sharper and clearer on powerful PCs. Plus, it supports NVIDIA’s Ray Reconstruction.

So, below you can find some comparison screenshots. The default renderer of Doom 2 Ray-Traced is on the left, whereas the RTX Remix Renderer is on the right.

As you can easily see, the RTX Remix screenshots look way better. Take for instance the first image. In the vanilla renderer, the outdoor environment looks flat, and lacks the light source that’s right in front of you. Or how about the fourth comparison? RTX Remix provides a sharper and more natural image, with more light bounces.

The only drawback of the RTX Remix Renderer is that the “jelly” blood effects don’t work. Instead, you’ll see the original blood effects and particles. But for those who didn’t like the “jelly” effects, this could actually be a good thing. After all, a lot have complained about them. So, that’s another plus if you did not like them.

So, if you own an NVIDIA RTX GPU, I highly recommend using the RTX Remix Renderer. You can download it from this link. All you have to do is unzip it in the same folder you have Doom 2 Ray-Traced. Then, you’ll simply have to run the “gzdoom-remix.bat” executable file. And that’s it.

If you are looking for other cool mods for Doom, I suggest getting Voxel Doom. Then we have Aliens Eradication TC which is a must-have mod for all our Aliens fans. Brutal Doom: Black Edition is a mod that attempts to bring Doom 3’s art style to the game. There’s also a cool Doom 64-inspired episode mod that you can download. And finally, you can download Bloom (which is a crossover between Blood and Doom).

Enjoy and stay tuned for more!

    1. There's nothing really better about the Remix mod, all they did was increase the contrast and remove other features like volumetric lighting.

  1. The RT version looks worse: 1. the volumetric lighting has been removed (see 3rd + final comparison pairs). 2. Crushed colours/over bloomed is not better (see 1st + final comparison pairs).

  2. So, if you own an NVIDIA RTX GPU, I highly recommend using the RTX Remix Renderer.

John, it would give you more credibility if you finally learned that RTX Remix is vendor-agnostic, despite its marketing name.

Since it uses a fork of DXVK internally, any capable Vulkan GPU should be able to run it.

That's the reason why people are able to run RTX Remix games even on the Steam Deck, such as Gmod RTX:

    1. AMD are a generation behind Nvidia with RT. DLSS and its ray reconstruction are part of the Remix version which AMD can't use.

I wouldn't recommend anyone without a RTX GPU to use the Remix version.

      1. Everyone familiar with tech knows that AMD is behind NVIDIA in RTRT, mostly because they dedicate a much smaller die space on their GPU architecture for this feature.

That still doesn't mean AMDGPUs are completely useless for running RT games, especially classic games converted via RTX Remix.

A high-end AMDGPU will be able to run these games with playable framerates easily.

I know that because I have seen how much upcoming changes to the Linux driver worked on by Valve will improve the RT performance on AMDGPUs…

        1. 7900XTX falls behind a 3080 10GB in FPS. DLSS is far superior to AMD’s FSR. AMD has no answer to ray reconstruction. In Black Myth Wukong the 7900XTX falls behind the old 3080 10GB while also suffering poorer visuals.

It really depends on what quality you set. I have steak in the fridge, while some people eat dog food, if not dog.

          1. DLSS isn’t really much better better than FSR these days not to mention native resolution is always better. Same with path tracing, it’s a very marginal difference. And Ray reconstruction is just a Nvidia marketing buzzword. All RT platforms clean up the image, otherwise it would be very grainy.

          2. I have no issue with Google. I am asking you to provide the online reviews of DLSS not being ‘much better’ than FSR which you claimed exist.

          3. Again, I
have no issue with Google. I am asking you to provide the online
reviews of DLSS not being ‘much better’ than FSR which you claimed
            exist.

It appears you were once again caught talking out of your a*s.

  3. Before and after they both look bad.

It is simple: as of now, you can't automate artistic direction in a video game and expect it to work because It's so hard to design light environments effectively.

  4. Honestly, the Remix mod looks far worse. They just cranked up the brightness and contrast, removing all the subtlety from the original. It even removed things like the volumetric lighting coming from the sky in the last example shot.

Modders do stuff like this all the time, thinking that just because it's "more" means it looks better.

  5. So much for it just works. 100% accuracy! Now people don't know which one is the most accurate out of 100 RT versions. Apparently you still need to tweak the fk out of RT. It does not simply works!
