January has been a slow month without any major new releases. Or at least the first half. As such, I’ve decided to revisit the classic Doom games. Now as you may have know, in 2022 we got a Full Ray Tracing/Path Tracing Mod for the first Doom game. However, that mod wasn’t compatible with Doom 2. Thankfully, though, there is a mod that fixes that.
But let’s take things from the beginning. In 2022, sultim-t, the man behind the amazing ray tracing/path tracing mods for Serious Sam, Quake, and Half-Life, released an RTX Mod for the first Doom game. That mod added full ray tracing/path tracing effects to id Software’s classic game. However, it was not compatible with Doom 2. While you could load the Doom2.wad, the maps did not have any static lights. And that’s where the following mod comes in.
Created by ‘rellik66’, this mod adds lights for PrBoom+Raytracing. Thus, you can now enjoy Doom 2 with Path Tracing.
What’s cool here is that Doom 2 with Path Tracing can feel like a horror game. Since there aren’t a lot of “fake” lights, the game is darker than before. And, in a really weird way, it may remind you of Doom 64’s atmosphere.
Now the downside is that since the game is darker, you might end up getting lost in its maps. Thankfully, the game has a flashlight that you can enable. And trust me, you’ll need it.
If you are a die-hard Doom fan, I highly recommend using these mods in order to replay Doom 2. They will completely change the way you experience it. I’ve also captured a video, showcasing ten minutes of gameplay from it. Since YouTube takes its time to process it, I’ll update this article with it once it’s finished. Until then, enjoy the following screenshots (for some reason the screenshots are way darker than what the actual game looks like. So no, the game does not look THAT dark).
Have fun!

Still, the PC platform won him over consoles. That was mainly due to 3DFX and its iconic dedicated 3D accelerator graphics card, Voodoo 2. What Doom needs is a remaster like the one done to Quake 2 that came out last summer.
Why? What would a remaster do?
Most launchers do already everything you need, especially GzDoom.
Also, you can improve it further with the mod “Beautiful Doom”, which is compatible with 99% of mods out there.
You can even download 4K textures, better sounds, smoother animations, etc. It’s limitless. Whatever a remaster would do would never be as good as mods.
All of that without the hassle of doing it is one answer, another would be not having to play on a PC to get a remastered Doom.
But don’t misunderstand me, I don’t mind modding, I could spend a weekend modding a game to play it exactly how I want it. And probably you too, but not everybody are you and I.
If you did anything at all to the graphics, it would be a heresy in my book.
That kind of blind statement is absurd, most remasters coexist with the original.
Doom/Doom2 already has an updated engine with updated graphics… It doesn’t need raytracing…
Nobody asked your opinion.
These are fan projects usually made for fun/practice/research.
Someone made a free mod in their own free time, and you find ways to whine about it.
If no one asked for my opinion, then who asked for yours? That’s the beauty of a free society. We can speak out minds, even if other people don’t like what we have to say.
BTW: GZDoom is open source, and was also made/maintained by volunteers. It’s OK to dislike something that someone volunteered their time to make and is giving away for free. I happen to like GZDoom of course, but I’m sick of raytracing this and temporal upscaling that. This nonsense has become nothing more than a cancer in the gaming world.
This is exactly i remembered this game.
That one screenshot. 371W to run Doom II. 🤣
4090 ni**as be like “i am so glad i bought a 2000+ video card to play doom with realistic shadows in a pitch black level.
What else would you play? Modern games?
exactly morrowind with rtx hahahaha.
Give me the first Unreal game and even better – Undying – with PT, as that is All that counts 😁
