PureDark has just released a free mod for Starfield that replaces FSR 2.0 with Intel XeSS and NVIDIA DLSS 2. This is a must-have mod for everyone, and it’s good to see a free version of it available to everyone.
You can download this Starfield DLSS 2/XeSS Mod from here. In order to install, you’ll have to follow this guide.
- Extract this mod to the game’s root folder.
- Install Upscaler Base Plugin, place the PDPerfplugin.dll into mods/UpscalerBasePlugin folder.
- You need to download nvngx_dlss.dll or libxess.dll, and place them into mods/UpscalerBasePlugin folder. Check UpscalerBasePlugin‘s description.
- Press END in the game to open the menu for the upscaler, and you can select DLSS or XeSS.
- You need to turn on FSR2 in the game’s settings, cuz this mod replaces FSR2 with DLSS/XeSS.
- There’s no quality levels anymore, you simply change the render scaling ratio in the game’s settings.
Since Starfield does not offer any presets, you can adjust the render scaling ratio to get the appropriate DLSS 2 Performance and DLSS 2 Quality Modes. For those wondering, 50% is equivalent to Performance Mode and 66% is equivalent to Quality Mode.
As we’ve showcased, the NVIDIA RTX 4090 is unable to offer a constant 60fps experience at Native 4K/Ultra Settings. Thus, DLSS 2 will be a must in order to maintain high framerates at that resolution, even on NVIDIA’s most powerful graphics card.
PureDark is also working on a DLSS 3 Mod that will improve performance in CPU-bound scenarios. From what we know, this will be a paid mod that will be only available to his Patrons. However, since this DLSS 2/XeSS Mod is available for free, we can at least cut PureDark some slack.
Have fun!

And yet Bethesda couldn’t even bother to do it themselves pathetic.
AMD ruined the game and modder puredark fixit
The DLSS mod is an extremely tiny improvement, stop being so dramatic. Performance is also identical.
Still need Fsr 3. Because they dont want Dlss 3 frame generation to work on rtx 20 and 30 series.
20 and 30 series lack the hardware to do frame generation efficiently. Sure you can do it in software but you won’t get nearly as good of gains and lose in other areas as that part of the GPU is doing the calculations instead of doing something else
It’s like the difference between a software encoder and a hardware encoder ….. Sure you can encode H.265 with software and a CPU but it is significantly faster to use the hardware encoder in your GPU
it’s crazy how today, not a single game can run without dlss… and yet arn’t graphically more impressive than previous gen games
In many cases they are objectively worse when considering they are newer games that are releasing quite a few years later. It’s like VFX in Hollywood movies now looking shittier than older movies because they don’t have the resources, time, or will to polish things up.
Also they don’t care. Just a job for them.
Under the Waves is a new stunning looking game 4k no dlss 8gb rtx 3070 how to make a game and done well no stutter good frame times.
It’s not about diminishing returns, we are literally getting worse results on better hardware. This game doesn’t look better than Wolfenstein 2 or Doom Eternal. Yet requires above 4090 hardware to get 60fps.
Apples and Potatoes, comparing Doom Eternal to Starfield.
Not least because Doom Eternal is a dynamic 1080p60 title for Xbox One S while this is a dynamic 4K30 title for Series X.
Y’all have no perspective.
Sigh…learn how games work. First off the issue really isn’t GPU power. It’s vram and CPU. These issues were solved in dx12 tier 2 but most people are running hardware that isn’t compatible.
So don’t blame devs when pc gamers have let themselves fall yeats behind the technology curve. Less than 1% of oc gamers have a GPU better than a 4070. That’s insanely sad.
Btw doom eternal.. it runs great because it’s based on the work of gamings biggest genius John Carmack and it used Vulkan which is essentially mantle a 13isj year old AMD creation with some modern functions added on top. Nvidia delayed adoption of dx12 and Vulkan because AMD performed better there and Nvidia was king of dx11.
Then we have gamers wanting more more more but they don’t buy the hardware. Heck most just meet the min req for Windows 10 system memory!
get used to the new normal.
The game doesn’t run without upscaling on consoles either.
Well it runs fine on PC without upscaling but his mod (and it’s by far the best in fact his Jedi mod is better than the update that added DLSS) basically provides better anti aliasing if you’re on a high end machine you don’t need upscaling or frame gen, especially if you have a x3d CPU on am5 and a fast SSD just for gaming and a different m.2 dedicated to just Windows.
Regardless everyone should get used to this because I don’t think people understand that hardware is behind engine development by YEARS and that’s because during the 7th console gen PC gamerd got it stuck in their head that they didn’t need better hardware…but if they want games to move forward it’s that or upscaling and frame gen it’s that simple.
Uh ..yès they are lol and the issue isn’t really the GPU it’s the CPU and io system of a PC. It needs help because compared to how efficient consoles are at moving data… PC is way behind because most people don’t have compatible hardware necessary to use rebar which when combined with direct storage is next level amazing.
It’s basically what the Xbox uses. The Xbox has a gen 3 laptop SSD. The PS5 has a custom top end controller and it’s gen 4 but the Xbox can basically match and sometimes beat it in load files and it’s all because of the combination of rebar and direct storage.
Shame more devs aren’t taking advantage and those that have dropped the ball.
We now need to distinguish between paid mods and free mods.
that is bizar – greed kills passion…
Indeed, altho its fitting. Didn’t Bethesda try to make paid mods a thing? Now modders are doing it themselves…
so far I’m not very far in…
The
performance is terrible, worst I’ve ever seen from any Beth game, and I
am a very dedicated fan to Bethesda. I go back to Morrowind day 1
purchase on PC.
2080TI overclocked, Ryzen 5800x3D, 32gb ram, nvme m.2 SSDs, 1440p
Inventory management is terrible, having to tab THEN go to inventory just to see how much weight i have left to pick stuff up.
Most
boring intro ever. I’m picking up toilet paper rolls in the first 3
minutes. I hope this isn’t someones inside joke on this game.
To me the music is just awful, bland and generic European orchestral fill in the black monotone music. Truly uninspired.
Gosh i want that Bethesda magic back of Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3&4.
I hope it get A LOT better, but this is the my most disappointed feeling
I’ve had so far from a Major Bethesda game, let alone a new IP.
So far the game is not living up to the starry-eyed expectations of a lot of gamers. Modders will improve the game over time but time takes time. The smartest thing to do is to not buy the game right away and try to play it.
That advice isn’t what most gamers want to hear but it is what they need to hear.
yeah like its literally fallout 4 and skyrim in space with just as stupid dialogues basically no roleplaying, bulletspongy enemies and every npc is essential, its boring with bad pacing and repetitive. The modders will fix it in 3-5 years from now. Bethesda learned nothing and will never improve, its like the whole game was made by an ai and ggmanshills calls it “a phenomenal achievement”
As long as the majority of gamers throw their money at Bethesda for their latest games then Bethesda will only learn one lesson. That they don’t have to have very much respect for the average gamer and still make hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue.
Yep very valid observation. I am remembering my joy of the previous games. Modders to the rescue again.
Game is getting a bit more fun, but man my GPU is on its knees and the music is awful.
The music feels oddly similar to Outer Worlds to me, especially when the music starts after getting to the start screen.
The only “magic” Beth ever had was Morrowind.

Fallout 3 is their final one, not even Skyrim, for me at least, and yes New Vegas not made by BGS, so it is not their game
Finally a good review and impression. Not the usual stupid comments, the game is sh*t.

Digital Foundries… what bunch of liars. The game-play is smooth and not jerky like in the videos. yeah right …lol

Money corrupts everything and everyone. Once you get big, a website, youtube channel or influencer, they will come to you and offer you to take the bribe.
“We’ll make them an offer they can’t refuse”
Steve and Tim from Hardware Unboxed seem to value their integrity more than $$$.
I don’t know why gamers lend any credibility to what Mainstream Media gaming sites report. Hell, even PCGAMER rated Starfield as a 75/100 and pointed out the usual buggy mess release of a Bethesda game in their review.
PCgamer has zero words on how the game runs. Digital Foundry has zero words on how the game runs on PC. Now that I’m seeing the numbers I legit get why.
I even reached out to the PCgamer reviewer. He has exactly the same CPU as me and a very similar GPU to mine. Asked him how it ran for him. Got nothing back, he’s probably under NDA and can’t talk about PC performance.
Indeed. DF has produced videos sponsored by Microsoft in the past. Ditto by Nvidia, too.
When somebody is being paid or afforded preferential treatment including special access by the producer/manufacturer of the product they’re analysing or reviewing then their conclusions and recommendations must naturally be interpreted accordingly.
Shills gonna shill.
Classic Bethesda at it again.

The Thing is at it again.
this sunny dude ignoring me for some reason
Bugthesda
Hey, it’s a feature, not a bug…
Hur Hur. Fanboy crap is pathetic. The same garbage will be posted when spiderman launches next month and everything in that video could be a mod or the person messing with console commands.
I haven’t seen anything like that in 46 hours
You say it like rearing dragons were a mod. Stop it now.
Excellent!
F Microsoft/Bethesda and their anti-consumer deal with AMD.
The game is not enjoyable at all.
-It’s not open exploration.
-You can’t actually travel to planets with your spaceship at all, you just click on a map of the planet and get a loading screen.
-NPC look dead-eyed and bored, they’re clearly all made from the same base model.
-All the characters are such normies with very mediocre writing. At some point a major NPC comes towards you, telling you how he changed his coffee for tea one day and met you, implying it is faith. Who wrote this garbage.
-The worst aspect of the game is the inventory and weight management, it is such an annoying mess. You have to constantly micromanage it because you and your space ship have weight limits. You have items that increase your carrying capacity, but they are consumable so your carrying capacity increases for a few minutes only. You also have a companion who can carry some weight, but you have to retrade every time you get on the ship, to get your items back. The inventory management is infuriatingly bad.
It is not for you then, Bethesda game have it own fans, even Im not liking their output after Fallout 3 , not even Skyrim. So, yeah …
you mean : fanBOY !
There’s a separate mod where people say it’s even better than PureDark’s: https://www.nexusmods.com/starfield/mods/196?tab=description
Thank you for this …
It isn’t
Still, f*ck PureDark.
installed it got it worked but saw 0 FPS improvement
AMD is doing the if you can’t beat DLSS, pay dev to not include it
you know Hell is frozen when we are pissed that an Nvidia feature is not included
At least it works on all GPU, while DLSS just works with their RTX line up
Did the Xess work for all GPU (the dp4a version) or just intel specific ?
