Tomb Raider RTX Remix

Here’s the original Tomb Raider with RTX Remix Path Tracing

YouTube’s ‘Dominus Aurate’ has shared a video, showcasing a WIP RTX Remix Path Tracing Mod for the original Tomb Raider game. This video can give you a glimpse at the graphical improvements that RTX Remix can bring to old classic titles.

Tomb Raider came out in 1996 on 32-bit consoles (Playstation and Saturn) and PC. It was the game that made Lara Croft a household name in the industry.

By using RTX Remix, Aurate was able to significantly improve the graphics of this old PC game. In a way, this RTX Remix Mod reminded me of the good old 3DFX patches. Voodoo and Voodoo 2 were able to blow us away with the visuals they could produce back in the 90s. Ah, the memories of 3DFX and GLIDE.

Anyway, as you can see, with RTX Remix Path Tracing, Lara Croft can cast shadows, and there are proper environmental lighting effects. There are also some amazing reflection effects. However, the textures remain the same, and clearly lack PBR properties. In theory, this is something that the RTX Remix Creator Tool will be able to resolve. For what it’s worth, there is still no ETA on when this tool will come out.

For those wondering, this RTX Remix Mod for Tomb Raider is not yet available for download. Still, you can go ahead and watch this video that showcases it in action.

In June 2023, we shared some other games (Call of Duty 2, Fallout New Vegas and Skyrim) with RTX Remix. You can also find Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Need For Speed: Underground 2 with RTX Remix. As such, we highly recommend checking them out.

Lastly, I’ve also included below a video showing Mount & Blade with RTX Remix. Similar to Tomb Raider RTX Remix, this mod for Mount & Blade is a WIP. Nevertheless, it looks cool so be sure to also watch it.

Enjoy and stay tuned for more!

  1. When the original TR came out my (then) current GPU could not run in in color, I had to run it in grayscale. True story

  2. It’s fantastic how RT lighting transforms these early 3D games…
And we had to wait 25+ years to see them like this…

I want to see as many classics ‘Remixed’ as possible, hopefully with the necessary additional lights already added by the modders.

    1. We didn’t really have to wait 25 years to see 99% of these effects. Considering the sun doesn’t move and many rooms don’t even have sun light entering them, this kind of lighting could MOSTLY be baked in the mid-2000s, and the high detail real-time shadows could be done since ~2011. TR1 in the Source 2 engine with PBR materials and baked lighting would look better than this mod while running at 15x the framerate.

      1. Thats just nonsence. The full PT is considerably more realistic than baked in lighting. Playing any of the recent TR games and the lighting is way below this. Even the last one with RTX shadows.

  3. This shows how lighting is much more important than textures or 3D models to make a game look realistic.
A few scenes don’t look so good in Tomb Raider, but it’s great overall and I would love to play it.😍
It won’t replace the original look (the way the developers intended it), but I wish we would get more “RTX remasters” of 90s games.
It would be so cool if Nightdive Studios implemented RTX in their FPS remasters.

    1. Remix allows you to replace textures and even redefine objects. I think additional lights can be added. This looks like the first stage of a Remix mod pack.

      1. These are possible only with the RTX Remix Creator Tool (which isn’t available yet and there is no ETA on when it will come out).

    2. We’re dealing with extremes here, the low end, meaning:
      – 1) of course the opposite extreme in lighting is going to be transformative in comparison, duh
      – 2) developers didn’t have any room to ‘intend’ sh*t at this point of earliest 3D, they pulled off what they could with the extremely limiting hardware and engines they had, so whatever change in looks would happen, they’d be ok with it.

  4. I’d pay good money to see the core desgin games get the Q2RTX treatment. I even loved TR6.
Fck everything made by CD though.

  5. what a bunch of whiny cry babies in the comments – at least this modder has accomplished something. Which is more than any of you has done – other than constantly disappointing your parents.

  6. Today on ‘How to fvck with a great game’
Those “imprefections” are the things that made the game what it is.
Stop with these fvcking bvllshitery RT in old games. It’s not good, it’s disgusting.
