Yesterday, Bethesda and Microsoft released Redfall on PC. Powered by Unreal Engine 4, it’s time now to benchmark it and see how it performs on the PC platform.
For this PC Performance Analysis, we used an AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D, 32GB of DDR5 at 6000Mhz, AMD’s Radeon RX580, RX Vega 64, RX 6900XT, RX 7900XTX, NVIDIA’s GTX980Ti, RTX 2080Ti, RTX 3080 and RTX 4090. We also used Windows 10 64-bit, the GeForce 531.79 and the Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition 23.4.3 drivers.
Arkane has added a few graphics settings to tweak. PC gamers can adjust the quality of Anti-Aliasing, Effects, Foliage, Shading, Shadows, Textures, and View Distance. The game also supports all PC upscaling techniques. In other words, there is support for NVIDIA DLSS 3, AMD FSR 2.1 and Intel XeSS. Moreover, there is a FOV slider.
Redfall does not feature any built-in benchmark tool. Thus, for both our CPU and GPU benchmarks, we used the following sequence. In this sequence, we explore one of the game’s environments, and then focus our attention on the gas station which has numerous enemies. This should give us a pretty good idea of how the rest of the game performs.
In order to find out how the game scales on multiple CPU threads, we simulated a dual-core, a quad-core and a hexa-core CPU. We also disabled the second CCD on our AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D. Unfortunately, we could not test the game on our i9 9900K system as the game was crashing upon logging in to its server. This is the second always-online game using Unreal Engine 4 with Denuvo that exhibits this behavior.
Redfall does not appear to require a high-end CPU for gaming with 60fps. Our simulated dual-core system was able to push an average of 78fps, though it was dropping below 50fps due to the game’s traversal stutters. However, once we enabled SMT, we were able to get framerates higher than 84fps at all times. It’s also worth noting that SMT brought a small performance hit on our hexa-core and octa-core systems.
What really shocked us with Redfall was its performance on AMD’s hardware. An AMD Radeon RX 6900XT was significantly faster than the NVIDIA RTX 3080, and the RX 7900XTX was able to match (and even surpass in low resolutions) the NVIDIA RTX 4090. This game loves AMD’s hardware.
At 1080p/Epic Settings, most of our GPUs were able to provide a smooth gaming experience. An AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 has no trouble at all pushing over 70fps at all times.
At 144p/Epic Settings, our five most powerful GPUs were able to run the game with over 60fps. And as for native 4K/Epic Settings, our RX 6900XT, RX 7900XTX, and NVIDIA RTX 4090 had no trouble at all running it.
As said, Redfall suffers from numerous traversal stutters. These stutters are worse than those found in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, and all of you will definitely notice/feel them. Needless to say that these stutters are also present on consoles. Speaking of which, and given the game’s performance on PC, I really don’t know why the game is locked at 30fps on Xbox Series X.
Graphics-wise, Redfall looks awful. The game’s dynamic shadows look bad and pixel-y, and there are major pop-in issues. Seriously, even on Epic Settings, you’ll be seeing objects changing their detail quality right in front of view. Its lighting is also nowhere close to what we’ve seen in other UE4 games. Redfall looks like an old-gen game, and not like a current-gen title. This is a big letdown, so don’t expect to be amazed by its visuals.
All in all, Redfall performs quite well on PC, especially on AMD’s GPUs. NVIDIA RTX40 owners can also take advantage of DLSS 3 in order to further improve their performance. We also did not experience any mouse acceleration issues. There are, however, different mouse sensitivity settings/values for ADS. And while the game can run well on PC (excluding the traversal stutters obviously which are present on all platforms), it looks horrendous!

UE4 is not inherently bad, it never was. Just look at Gears 5.
Require dev to do some of the work the engine should have done for them… like pre shader compile on load for instance. Whenever that’s a bad engine design choice or not is up to debate. IMO it should have been in the engine as default but overridable if the devs done it in other ways

dark messiah was interesting but it was a buggy unifinished unbalanced mess. The problem with arkane is that their games got more dumbed down and simplier over time

If you can ignore that in the safe house all the leaders, except black medic are female and that female Pastor has nose ring and tattoos all over her arms, that her face if detached from the body, looks like a guy.
That all other female NPCs just as ugly and revolting as she is.
That the only white female is a Hollywood “White Trash” caricature: She is a Weapon mechanic, pregnant, wears tight dirty jeans with holes that are unzipped at the top to show half of her pregnant belly.
She is blond of course and wears a dirty tracker cap and rubber knee boots like if shes getting ready to walk in the cow manure on the farm.
Her husband always stands behind her near kitchen sink and whines that they heave to leave.
That when you finish your first mission, unlock the Firefighter safe house, and open the door with all these characters a WOMEN wit ha bat jumps you while all the man stand behind her.
Oh and the evil guys, they not different, women are “capable” just as men assaulting with shotguns, running and shooting etc
and lets not ignore the minority Vampires, Black, Brown, whatever, also the queen vampire is black.
If you OK with everything i mentioned, then what awaits you are HOURS upon hours of such wonderful activities like:
Clearing Houses and looting
Clearing Locations and Looting
Running to Check points with:parachuted loot, fallen helicopters with loot, laser beams that call in loot drops, and then clearing the drops, defending the drops.
Also you’ll be dying and running from safe house all the way BACK to where you got killed, no save states, no saves, only autosaves and resurrection in safe houses or landmarks [that you need to activate first, if you didn’t then its all the way to beginning of the map]

i watched some guy playing it for 2-3 hours, its like they made a small town map and all the missions are throw away borderlands fetch kill and loot quests.
Does not seem to have interesting gameplay or story.

Can confirm, played around with the gamepass version earlier today as well and good gravy is it awful for all the reasons you stated and more. It’s a technical mess too. Some that I came across:
– Horrible traversal stutters
– Egregious shadow and object LOD pop-in
– Stupid FPS drops where it’s not justified at all (particularly when a vampire is in a kill state outdoors)
– Laughable shadow and volumetric lighting resolutions
– Environmental assets clipping through each other as if the artists just didn’t care about their job at all
I hereby nominate this game as the worst AAA release of 2023. Arkane has set the bar incredibly low, but given how the entire industry is, I wouldn’t be surprised if something else even worse came out within the next 7 months.

I rather keep playing Dead Island 2 that i got for 6$, its sure is more fun [even thou it also repetitive and after Dying Light series, it feels like “Not Enough” and I always find myself trying to climb things and cant]

Yeah I think the FPS drops are partly related to shader compilation stutter, which has been plaguing many, MANY games lately. There are just some weird bottlenecks in the engine somewhere because even with all low settings at 720P with DLSS ultra performance (which is effectively 240p) I couldn’t get a consistent 120Hz.
For the record, my specs: Ryzen 7 5700X CPU, RTX 3060 Ti GPU, 2 x 16 GB DDR4-3600 CL16 RAM (dual rank), 960GB PCI-E 3.0 NVMe SSD. Not high end by any means, but not exactly potato tier either. Certainly not potato enough to have my FPS dip to mid 30s at 1080p when playing a game that looks a decade old. These developers just suck at optimizing lol
And man, all this game achieved in doing is making me miss Left 4 Dead 1 and 2. I dislike the zombie genre and I had a blast with those two games. Perhaps it’s time to revisit those titles.

Incorrect. DLSS scales from a resolution that’s 1/3rd of the output on each axis when using the ultra performance setting. 720 / 3 = 240.

Ok, 8K DLSS Ultra Performance is 1440p, so that’s 3x per axis.

Im on 4090, and i was getting drops, other times its fine 97fps locked [100hz with 97 frame limit]
I no longer use 120hz for games since i dont feel the difference and with 100hz its a higher chance that all games will be doing locked FPS and freeing up GPU to use less power = less heat, its too early to turn on AC but its already hot enough that during gaming [custom loop] 13900k and 4090 outputting enough heat to give me a headache
Goddamn dude, you’re basically running the highest end rig possible lol. My entire PC under heavy load probably outputs as much heat as your GPU alone, and that can be felt in my living room in the summer time. I can’t imagine what it was like for you when your machine used to run at full blast. Good on you for being not too picky about high FPS, as the amount of efficiency you gain from underclocking and undervolting to achieve a consistent 97 FPS VS an iffy 120 FPS is yuuuuge. I wouldn’t be surprised if you saw your heat output and power consumption drop by as much as 50%.
And personally I’d be fine with fluctuating frame rates if my display had adaptive-sync support but my TV is a 6 year old Bravia that is sadly missing the feature, so inconsistent FPS is quite bothersome to me. I’ll lock a game to 60FPS if it meant a consistent experience. Hell, I locked Portal RTX to 30FPS because I couldn’t even maintain a consistent 40. I look forward to upgrading my display to a micro LED one when they finally become “reasonably” priced.
I have VRR, im on S95B, so i see FPS drops on the overlay, maybe i dont really feel them if they dont drop below the VRR minimum.
But 30fps is 30fps, when i was playing TLOUS remake on PS5, i tried 4K/30 quality mode and honestly, yes it was sharper but 1440p/60 was better
and first time I actually finished the game on PS3 with sub 30fps, but times chance, i don’t play 30fps unless its my only option anymore, spoiled lol
Honestly im happy with locked 60 to be honest and the only reason i use 100hz is because I feel like i have to because why else i have a monitor/tv that can do and such GPU?
I also dont mind 4K DLSS 2 in Quality mode, for me it looks better, less aliasing, especially in transparency and i get less heat from my PC.
In one month ill turn on my AC and wont turn it off until end of November when the summer ends here, then i wont be thinking about PC heat, ill be thinking about electricity bills lol
