Half Life Classic feature

Half-Life gets a Full Path/Ray Tracing Mod, available now for download

Modder ‘sultim_t’ has released a must-have mod for all Half-Life fans. As the title suggests, this mod brings real-time full path tracing to Valve’s classic first-person shooter.

sultim_t is the man behind the Path Tracing mods for Doom, Serious Sam TFE and Quake. This is an incredible mod and below you can find a video that showcases it in action. The fact that the modder has made it without using RTX Remix is also something that impresses me.

Now I have to be honest here; I’d prefer a full Path Tracing Mod for Black Mesa. Contrary to Doom and Quake, the original Half-Life has not aged well. Moreover, the game’s classic textures do not hold up well. In short, this mod is not as transformative as the RT Mod for Doom and Quake.

But anyway, you can go ahead and download the mod from here.

Have fun!

    1. I heard a couple of years ago that they were working on a new “update” version of Half-Life 2 (like, an “updated update” lol), so wait and see.

      1. I think that “update” already came out? minor graphical updates if I recall.
Only those big texture mods really overhaul the game, but don’t retain the original atmosphere.

          1. Yh did some googling and found the “Half-Life 2: Remastered Collection” in currently being worked on but no ETA 🙁

    1. yep, without reading the article and just looking at the movie i was thinking the same, this would be great for black mesa. Still it looks nice

  1. Half Life not aging well is not something i can agree with. I don’t even really know what that means actually. Design wise ? It mops the floor with everything today. Graphics wise ? It has that smooth looking and tidy retro look. People are playing CS 1.6 to this day, so the graphics can’t be it. I cant identify what exactly has not aged well. If i would go though it right now, every section of it would just make me shocked at how much better it is that any fps today.

    1. I agree with everything you say.
One thing about level design in recent FPS though: try Cultic, it’s absolutely incredible imho.

But yeah, I admit, I’ll never understand the “didn’t age well” thing, even in movies. I’m totally fine with the old textures, and I don’t think this RT version will be better. It’ll only offer a slightly different experience.

    2. Some people pretty much don’t care about graphics or have a very low threshold, which is fine and even commendable and smart.

But, how it hasn’t aged well however? In graphics technology. Very simple: extremely low texture res, character, assets and level geometry, static lighting, shadows quality, very low environmental details, stiff animations…
Artistically though? Most accomplished with what they had at the time.

    1. Search for “black mesa ray tracing” on Youtube, you’ll find lots of interesting things. ?
Reshade + Marty McFly’s RT shaders seem to work well.
