Half-Life 2 Beta Update adds ultra-wide & Vulkan support, improves FOV

Valve has released a new beta patch for Half-Life 2, HL2: Episode One and Half Life 2: Episode Two. This new beta patch adds Vulkan support to the game, meaning that these HL2 games no longer use/feature the DirectX API.

Additionally, this new beta update adds support for ultra-wide monitors. Not only that, but it improves FOV (increases max FOV from 90 to 110), and packs a number of interface improvements. Furthermore, this beta update fixes a number of bugs and issues that the community has reported over the past decade.

Now the bad news here is that this beta update introduces micro-stutters. This is something that Valve will have to look into as these stutters can be annoying. My guess is that the final/public patch will not be plagued by them.

Valve has not released any changelog, but you can find below a video that highlights the changes.

Enjoy!

    1. Yeap, no new details other than “sources” though so there is nothing to report on this. Still, can’t wait to see how Ubi will f’ it up 😛

      1. Step one. Design it around online.

        Step two. Insert politics.

Or are those reversed order? Who knows, who cares? It will be utter garbage, and that is a safe conclusion to make with practically anything Ubisoft craps out these days.

  1. From what I’ve heard, Splinter Cell has been on hiatus for so long because Ubi couldn’t figure out how to effectively monetise it within their current business model. So it is going to be a live service looter shooter or battle royale? Ubi has pivoted pretty much their entire business to live services.

  2. The game beta still runs with DX9 by default, you can check the working api with MSI Afterburner Overlay
edit: you can force it by adding -vulkan

    1. I don’t know. Someone told me to put “-vulkan” in the launch options but that isn’t working on Windows so maybe it’s just for Linux right now? (Yes, I selected the Beta version)

      1. yes, I it works like that, just add -vulkan in the command line properties on steam, it changes the api to vulkan but the game still says dx9, but you can check that works with msi afterburner
