Battlefield 2042 Beta has some of the best graphics we’ve seen on PC at 4K/Ultra

Electronic Arts and DICE have launched the Open Beta phase for Battlefield 2042. The game uses the latest version of Frostbite Engine and looks absolutely glorious on PC at 4K/Ultra.

In order to capture the following screenshots, we used an Intel i9 9900K with 16GB of DDR4 at 3600Mhz and NVIDIA’s RTX 3080. We also used Windows 10 64-bit, the GeForce 472.12 driver.

Unfortunately, the beta is not compatible with MSI Afterburner. As such, we can not show any performance figures. For what it’s worth, our NVIDIA RTX3080 was able to run the game with framerates between 54fps-70fps. It’s perfectly playable, and some overclocked models may be able to achieve a constant 60fps experience.

Now while the beta is quite demanding, it looks absolutely glorious. Coming from Far Cry 6, Battlefield 2042 looks significantly better in every way. From its physics to its lighting, Battlefield 2042 displays some of the best visuals we’ve seen to PC to date.

I seriously hope that DICE will not downgrade its graphics in an attempt to “optimize” the game. The game comes with numerous graphics settings so PC gamers can lower some settings in order to improve overall performance. Furthermore, the game will launch with NVIDIA DLSS. Unfortunately, the beta does not support so we can’t comment (at least for now) on its implementation.

Enjoy the screenshots and stay tuned for more!

  1. You’re kidding right? BF1 looks far better and plays better too. Even in your own screenshots it doesn’t look that good

    1. Ahem, nope. There are some amazing physics here (especially the wind physics), and vegetation has been significantly increased. The lighting is also consistent and looks awesome, even though we have a dynamic weather (contrary to other games where it can sometimes look great but other times bad). The quality of all materials is also exceptional.

      1. Vegetation and lighting looks something out of Crysis 3 and yes it looks suuuperb! Crysis 3 graphics with good physics (maybe not BF 4 level but still) and 256 players! And people still complain.Just try and enjoy things for once…

        1. Almost all debris now have physics too and they don’t immediately disappear. This brings back memories of the PhysX games. The wind effects are also better than what we’ve seen in other games. There are some shortcomings but calling BF2042 “old-gen-ish” or bad is an exaggeration. Especially since I’m playing back-to-back Far Cry 6 and BF2042, and BF2042 looks miles better than FC6 in every way.

          1. now THAT, John, is a flawed comparison. There’s a consensus regarding FC6’s visuals which, ever since the announcement have been repeatedly referred to as “outdated” as DUNIA engine is starting to show its age
the improvements you touched on here about BF are undeniable however they are not substantial. we have come to expect a certain level of visual and artistic fidelity from DICE that is not exactly immediately apparent here without squinting, nor is it satisfactory. the enhancements here pale in comparison with those of DICE’s previous titles.

as I mentioned in my other comment, I think it can all be chalked up to EA’s intention to attend to the live-service aspect of BF from now. The SP campaigns in the previous entries used to serve as a visual showcase for the engine but the sorely-missed campaign this year has now made the lack of sufficient engine upgrades more tangible for old fans

          2. So true man! Haters gonna hate I guess.Imagine a world where DICE is owned by another company and have the luxury to build the game with almost unlimited time (5-6-7 years like Rockstar does) or/and target 30 fps and focus on the single player route as well. They keep pushing technology forward with each title and they do this with E.A. on their backs forcing them to release games almost constant.I feel like DICE will never reach their full potential with E.A. …

      2. This comparison has MANY flaws.

        1) 1:09 – Completely different altitudes. This is flawed as the BF4 helicopter is closer to the ground (so there will be more details due to the LOD changes).
        2) 3:23 – Flawed comparison. YOU CAN’T COMPARE A FENCE WITH A CRATE. What’s next? Comparing fences with trees?
        3) 2:20 – Flawed comparison. Comparing a fuel tank with a small house? Seriously now?
        4) 7:00 – Jungle environment vs industrial environment? This is in favour of BF2042 but still, the environments should be similar

Still, and even with these flawed examples, BF2042 looks better. I have to agree that some effects are worse (god rays from the sun and the glass effects when shooting it) but we’ll have to wait and see if DICE addresses these issues in the final version. Overall though, and even with these “shortcomings”, BF2042 is miles better than BF4.

PS: As for CP2077, it’s still one of the best looking games on PC. Like it or not, and despite its bugs, it justifies its GPU requirements.

        1. it is supposed to look better and it does but my question is why only slightly?
I think in order to capture a wider audience (for the inevitable F2P BR mode) and due to the absence of a proper SP campaign they were left with very little motivation for upgrading the engine . rather they have downgraded Frostbite and decided to follow in the footsteps of Ubisoft, that is: ” why upgrade or optimise while we can sell to more users”, which stands to reason from a financial standpoint but save from a few expected upgrades here and there to create an illusion of visual improvement, very little has improved
let alone the controversial operator system and classes as well as some drastic and equally controversial changes to gameplay which now looks awfully like Warzone however, less smooth

    2. They recycled the same assets from BF4. Nothing fancy about it, some people are trying hard to overhype this remaster.

  2. The lighting sucks, not an improvement, while the textures are terrible. Have you even checked all objects? Such as the concrete barriers? Not to mention these had some destruction in BF3!

Yeah and i also stopped using MSI Afterburner. Everytime a game gets released, this dump does not recognize it.

  3. Not just from the pics, i also played it. It has spotless textures. Nothing is ugly or blurry.
Amazing visuals tho? Nah. Nothing better than BFA1 and V (5). I actually think V looks better.

We will see with the other maps, but so far i’m not too impressed by a BF4 clone…

    1. For anybody reading this: It is not. Simple go into Riva and create a new profile using add a program, add BF.exe and BFlauncher.exe and then set them to low/normal detection. Toggle Global to Off and you are set.

  4. Those visuals look horrible. Blurry and oversharpened, with what appears to be film grain effect. Games from 5+ years ago look better. Hell, the original Crysis looks better…

  6. I love the quality content of this website but this article is very suspicious with its overhype. BF2042 is a recycled BF4. Graphics are not next gen. Try BF5 on lowest settings and try BF2042 Beta on lowest settings, you will notice BF2042 is a huge step back.

Also, the directional sound of footsteps is not well refined in BF2042, same as BF4. Whereas this was perfected in BF1 and BF5.

Also the sound of the world and guns is muffled and not as crisp and clear as BF1 and BF5, using same hardware and settings.

Also, sniper weapons in WW2 seem to have lower bullet drop than rifles from 2042! In BF2042 a sniper rifle has a ridiculous parabolic trajectory and bullet drop, just like BF4.

It is a minimal effort recycle of BF4. If you overhype it on your website, you will lose credibility going forward.

    1. Treat others as they would like to be treated? Being glorified for their incompetence, sugar-coated for every mistake they do and be called exceptional players when they drive the team to losing a game? And that because they shouldn’t feel bad about their gaming skills and failure?

      ??

    2. Translation. LBGT, non whites, Jews and Muslims are a protected class. Even though Jews and Muslims were the primary slave traders in modern times and LBGT is the biggest bullying demographic in the world (outside the ADL)

      1. i think what you have said is an exaggeration, how do you know a player s ethnicity from their username or battletag? bullsh*t

      2. keep learning about the world from reddit, twitter, youtube and 4chan. You sound like a subhuman with an internet connection.

        1. Wow dude! Just because reading isn’t quite possible, there is no need to make it sound like they’re missing out. Unreal man

  7. John, just an idea. Try to use a “gallery” style when you post multiple images on your articles. IIRC you used to do that in the past but for some reason you’ve stopped.

    It would be really handy
    ?

  8. I played the beta for an hour. Not at 4k but maxed out at 1440p and the game didn’t look like anything special at all. I wasn’t wowed. Looked like a game from 5 years ago. I already uninstalled it too. Didn’t really grab me.

  9. Graphics were pretty good but is no one going to talk about the f*king huge maps and running for 10 minutes before getting ganked by some bush camper? Not buying for sure.
