Yesterday, Ubisoft officially revealed a remake for Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake. However, it appears that this remake was not received well by a lot of gamers. The main reason behind this negative reception is the game’s underwhelming graphics. And, in an interview with TheMakoReactor, Ubisoft India shed some additional details on the game’s art style, visuals, and graphics.
According to Production Director Sashi Menon, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake does not suffer from any low budget or strict deadline issues.
“No, it was not a problem of timeline or budget. For us at Ubisoft quality is of the utmost importance and this is something that we have kept in mind from the start. The project has been in development for the last two and a half years. We have had at peak 170 members working on this project and not to mention other investments in infrastructure and set up to make a modern game. No there have not been any cutback in budget or timeline for the game.”
This statement feels awkward, especially after watching the game’s announcement trailer. I mean, you can clearly see an NPC being reused multiple times in one single cut-scene. Then again, we wouldn’t expect the game’s director to go ahead and admit any budget restrictions. On the other hand, though, Pierre Sylvain-Gires admitted some technical difficulties the team had with the Anvil Engine.
“The principle of the rewind is a headache technically. The Anvil engine was not made at all to do rewind, to do slow motion, to do all those time manipulation. The tech approach was a challenge.”
Senior Producer Annu Koul added:
“Anvil engine is mainly for open-world games. The game we have is a short, linear game and not an open-world game so there are many challenges we have to be wary of.”
Both Koul and Sylvain-Gires stated that the art style was exactly what the team had in mind.
“We decided to go for a unique visual treatment to make this game standout from other games. It’s not another Assassin’s Creed, it’s not like the same Prince of Persia from 2008. It has to be unique. This magic, this fantasy is shown through the saturation, through the light. So, it was also a challenge to redefine the visual identity of the game with this remake.”
“The main challenge was to create a game where we had to play on the nostalgia and we have to give it the modern twist. Keeping this balance intact is important.”
Still, Ubisoft India has not provided any additional explanations about the remake’s graphical shortcomings. And while the game looks better than the original version, it’s nowhere close to what other remakes have achieved.
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake releases on January 21st, 2020.

“No, there was no budget or time constraints, we’re just really incompetent”
Das racist!11!
That one guy in the video admitted he had no experience and just walked in and asked if he could work there.
knowing Ubisoft i fear that this crap of product might get a downgrade than upgrade.
I know.. I am just dying reading that..
Apparently Ubisoft do.
Don’t forget drinking cow pee
haha so true , these indians can never make a decent product
“for us at Ubisoft quality is of the utmost importance”.ubisoft and quality’s importance?joke of the year.
Classic – overpaid Ubisoft novices, with no proper gamedev experience whatsoever, are putting the blame on the engine team for not having talent. Strong words coming from the same studio that made Just Dance series.
So basically they are just terrible at their jobs. This remake looks like it needs a remake. Pass.
ouch lmfaoo
“So basically they are just terrible at their jobs.”
Welcome to Ubisoft
would you prefer if it was “modernized” aka pozzed?
Wait, since when has Ubisoft been getting games made in India? Not sure we have any proper game development studios here, no wonder the quality isn’t great.
ubisoft mumbai is called i believe.
This remake is an insult to the original game
Literally 0 reasons for anyone to buy this when they can get the superior original for two bucks
The superior? You guys are blind. Game looks as it should for a faithfull remaster. It’s more about artstyle than ultra realistic graphics. And yeah, it stands out, as did the original.
wait till you see all the woke stuff and microtransactions they’ve put in
I would see no reason and logic why. I’m sure there won’t be. One thing I don’t quite like is Farah’s new voice.
You forgot is a Ubisoft game it seems. Every game for them is an opportunity to inject their marxists politics.
Come on, bud, you still can’t figure out with whom you are trying to reason?
hi indian master of open defecation
where you from ? Because, you know, there’s so much sh*t hole on earth… Good chances you are from on of those…
indian spotted lol leave this site smelly bob and vageena ewww
Indian spotted ?? you are THAT st*pid you trash ? Jeezzz just KYS
indian spotted lol
You can’t be more wrong on this ???
Couldn’t agree more lols
First of all remake, not a remaster
Secondly, artstyle doesn’t mean it’s a valid excuse for your game to look at least 8 years old. You can do a ‘faithful’ look to the original without looking outdated and realistic and still have it stand out. This ain’t it chief.
It doesn’t look 8 years old to me. Wipe your glasses.
You should rather play more recent games then…
You need to get your eyes checked bud!
He can’t seem to accept the reality.
You need to get your eyes checked. Or maybe you haven’t played some of the modern games in years.
Go look at a title like the Mafia Remaster. Now that’s how you do it right.
Mafia DE is a Remake
so is this. they call it a ‘remaster’ but fact is, it’s all new assets, new engine. not based on the original code at all.
You can’t compare them, different genres, different art style. That kind super of realistic graphics would’ve taken away from its overall atmosphere. It’s done like this to preseve the art style and stand out.
Yeah, it stands out alright. As being ugly and last last gen.
why indians can never accept there faults , i see indian people arguing with everyone on social media , indian people think they are the best lol and everyone is jealous of them , india is an official laughing stock for the whole world
I’m not indian, stupid ? I just happen to like the way they handled this
even Activision did a better job with the Modern Warfare 2 Remaster
Ubisoft and quality in the same sentence?
LOL
Today’s list of oxymorons:
– Ubisoft Quality
——————–
damn they ruined it so badly…
are u f**ing kidding me? india???the country where people call COW their mother and where drinking COW-PISS is considered holy??? wtf is wrong with these people!!!!!
??
yup that poor country can never make a decent game
https://media1.giphy.com/media/K7hhudQOU3GzS/giphy.gif
They drink cow urine?
yes they do
google india bathe in cow sh*t, and hit images. it really starts to make sense why this new game looks like sh*t.
I really don’t think it is that common…
its pretty obvious that your an indian getting triggered over facts , whole world hates india lol , get used to it
LMAO man! The WHOLE world is hating USA more than any other sh*t hole country, you ignorant!!!
Maybe one day you can be proud of ur sh*t country , u indians were always a slave and will remain slaves of powerful countries like USA . .
This comment sounds like someone living on a rock who is clueless towards what corporations are looking for (which is basically paying for scraps).
They have some good programmers there so its mainly Ubisoft being a crap company that hire talenteless people
Wow and in USA, they are giving a badge to every sick motherf*cking white supremasist and children are dying from bullets every f*cking month in school!!! Way better!!!
You seem’s to be describing the whole southern USA !!!
Yet another lie by game developers.
Expected, it’s outsourced and it shows.
No wonder why the chinese are also mad at them indians right now lol!
” The Anvil engine was not made at all to do rewind, to do slow motion, to do all those time manipulation. ”
dude, doom has a slow mo mod. wtf you talking about?
“We decided to go for a unique visual treatment to make this game standout from other games. It’s not another Assassin’s Creed, it’s not like the same Prince of Persia from 2008. ”
which is why i say dont whine about the graphics, it could look cartoonish with a “Artistic style” so its better that way. A good game from ps3/x360 is still good.
Don’t know who they’re kidding, it’s obvious Ubi isnt sure PoP can bring them a ton of money so they gave it to a trash studio with little resources
when they stat defending *quality* in the beginning we knew its gonna be a hard fail and terrible product
But, AnvilNext 2.0 engine was also used for R6 Siege. And Anvil was created to be very scalable.
Anvil 1.0 (successor to Scimitar) was used for PoP Forgotten Sands even! So, things could’ve been better.
If they had problem with the Anvil architecture, they could’ve used Massive Entertainment’s Snowdrop Engine.
Snowdrop was made for Division series but it is also touted as being very scalable and was used for South Park: The Fractured but Whole.
I can’t comment on the complexity of the implementation of the time manipulation feature.
But only upside I can say, that hasn’t been commented on is: IF this game runs @ 60fps smoothly, then the visual choice can be appreciated to some degree. If Performance is super smooth then at least that’s commendable.
i know it’s fun to hate everything but come onnnn it’s a remake of prince of persia 1 .. pop1 wasn’t dark and gritty for the remake they just went with a similar artstyle sure it could look better and it should it’s ubisoft not some indie developer but it looks good enough (~2012 graphics) and more importantly it’s a remake of one of the best games ever made imo (i loved the story, the combat waaay to simple and repetitive unlike warrior within) The remake looks fun and i can’t wait.
You sound like how the developer that’s talking looks, like an imbecile. “Pop 1 wasn’t sure dark & gritty”, who said or complained about that. Who ever requested Nolan’s Prince Of Persia? Boy…
ermm ok maybe calm down ?! you seem a little bit angry, have you played pop1 ? i don’t think u did or maybe u forgot what it looks like since it came out so long ago 2003 this remake seems to be using a similar artstyle and color palette, i think a game remake should look similar to the original and in that regard this game is ok.
For this type of artstyle you don’t rly need to go crazy with tessellation raytracing hairworks/tressfx the only thing this game could rly use more of is ambient occlusion, i don’t remember people complaining about graphics when zelda breath of the wild came out and if you rly rly can’t live without 99999 post processing effects .. just use reshade add mxao (ambient occlusion) or rtgi (pathtracing) add some bloom, fake hdr max the resolution to 8k whatever get’s you closer to that nerdgasm that that apparently you can’t live without.
Realistic graphics aren’t the most important thing for a game tho some would disagree i bet ..
You are just trying to justify mediocrity…simple as that.
In a way yes,not every game has look like cyberpunk/the last of us 2 / god of war, i’m ok with a simple artstyle that doesn’t make your hardware scream at 99% usage squeezing every little bit of performance out of it, IF .. IF it’s a good fit for that particular game and for pop 1 this artstyle fits imo could it look better if for example the textures were better quality ?! sure .. but i’m still happy even without .
I get that, and i agree…not every game has to be a technical powerhouse…indies exist for a reason.
But we are talking about Ubisoft, and Prince of Persia here. A remake should be if not as good, even better than the original game (if not, we are talking about a waste of money and time)…and this is not that from what they showed. Them having to come out and trying to explain why the game looks like it does says a lot.
I think nobody here said anything about the artstyle (which yes, looks closer to the concept art even) but on the fidelity and quality of the models which is a different beast (and they look awful, amateurish to say the least)
“But we are talking about Ubisoft, and Prince of Persia here”
this is what i said:
“sure it could look better and it should it’s ubisoft not some indie developer but it looks good enough (~2012 graphics)”
The last time they released a prince of persia game the main character didn’t look much like the prince of persia and the story was TRASH so f that game, the game before that one was a prince of persia game only in name i’ll always remember that one as the GAME with 1000 combos AND NO ENEMIES TO USE EM ON.
So im happy to see them do ANYTHING with this ip, i thought it was DEAD killed by assassin’s creed and that AWFUL pop movie.
So you better have something (even if its mediocre, to not say shit/y) over nothing? you are the perfect costumer for Ubisoft.
He’s a costumer?
“you are the perfect costumer for Ubisoft”
ok.
(if you wanna insult me just say it i don’t mind, you don’t need to act passive aggressive)
you’re stating that the game is “mediocre” because you don’t like the graphics and ubisoft is trash right ?!.. so story doesn’t matter ?! gameplay doesn’t matter? music, va .. sound doesn’t matter ? level design doesn’t matter ? ..
all that matters is:
1) u hate ubisoft so u hate the game (0% objectivity)
2) u don’t like the graphics ok. (graphics wh*re much?)
so in you’re opinion graphics=the only thing that matters when reviewing a video game .. OK.
i think most of the people (you) that are complaining about the graphics have never played the fist game and yet they can’t stop crying about how this remake is trash and pop deserves better .. (how would you know ?!you probably never played any games released before 2006)
i’m happy that they’re finally releasing a prince of persia game after 10 years i’m dissapointed that it doesn’t look good as it should and i’ll wait until it’s released before calling it anything between MEDIOCRE and GOOD while hoping that this remake leads to more prince of persia games/remakes.

“The cheaper we make it, the more we profit.”
Really, not that difficult to figure out.
“…it’s an Ex-Gameloft studio…”
Certainly explains why this looks like a mobile game.
Not just this one, nearly every game they showed had mobile level assets and animations.
They’re outsourcing half the second world and mobile devs to make their games now.
What the f*** did I just read? What is this bullshit? They literally said absolute gibberish. In 2020 with 170 for a major publisher and this is the best you can do. Give me a god damn break
Man I’m trying to make sense of his nonsense as well. But I think I’m going to just sit this one out.
Exactly… total BS.. a team of 170 people aren’t able to do their jobs properly.. what a shame. They really need to meet Bright Memory Dev, a single guy who actually is able to make better looking game by using UT engine!
Crytek is trash now. Their new assets are completely devoid of any originality, generic B.S and they didn’t even care to put forth PC version first, they made quick bucks on that stupid ARM mobile 720P garbage Switch processor, and the game is clearly an X360/PS3 console port, not the O.G Crysis, There won’t be probably a sandbox as well. It’s a reshade cartoon preset with some new assets, it’s been like 13 years ofc they can do some polish but it’s nothing Crysis should have been, Blackfire mod is better.
AND then you have EGS Excl. Crytek can go and tweet again that they support BLM. All of their talent is gone, it’s bled dry since Ryse Son of Rome and Crysis 3. They closed up a lot of studios, the former shell is what’s left sadly their CryEngine was only used by 2017 PREY and Homefront The Revolution, no other games used it, I personally like that Engine over UE4 but that’s what it is.
So this is why they said, “your work should speak for itself”, because what’s coming out of these peoples mouths doesn’t match their submission. Haha, “it’s linear & not an open world so it’s harder to make”. A sentence o thought I’d never hear. Basically Ubisoft been using the same template open world trash, they forgot how to make a simple linear game. WOWZAAA, They shouldn’t have said that out loud.
Crytek is a different level of bullsh*t, but you have a point there…Crysis Remake looks like a masterpiece of technology and visual fidelity in comparison with this embarrassing fueled by nostalgia cash in.
were really reaching a point now where remakes are becoming lazy
The amount of pandering in the “Ubisoft Forward” was sickening. They fired one bald, arab guy and promptly replaced him with another bald, arab guy in an Assassin’s Creed jacket. Hardly any white men where present in the show and the majority were women of different shades of brown. I think I might have seen one white woman that was an actual woman.
Why use that engine if they knew that it would be a problem?

remember, its made by indians who lack basic human common sense
Can always count on DSOG comments for racism lol.
It’s India. It’s gamedev scene is way less developed than the west, as you would expect. This is true for games, films (you can see it in CG quality in films etc).
There’s no need to insult Indians as people.
They are cheap labor for certain, and with that you get cheap products…the last time i checked this was funded by the multinational corporation called Ubisoft. So money is not clearly an issue for them…but, having novice developers with barely any talent was shown in that trailer.
If they ask $60 for this, then they are out of their minds because they clearly didnt expend money on this game for asking that.
cheap labor for cheap products for cheap piece of trash americans customers, who don’t want to pay the price for quality…. cancerous society…
This is dso, what did you expect? Sadly, it also makes this site pretty thrashy(But we’ll deserved) .
haha triggered indian spotted ,
You narrowminded piece of trash, I bet you’re from a republican state in this sh*t country called USA
lol another triggered indian spotted ,USA is 100x better then trash india, before talking down on USA remember ur government and ur people lick our boots , you indians are slaves of USA
I’m not indian you narrowminde 0 IQ piece of rotten trash, southern USA should be nuked BTW
calm down indian slave
Cheap attack that cover Ubisoft management which is very white and jewish.
Like most southern Americans
I am sure they will fix the graphics and animations When they release this for the PS5 next year and the pc owners of the game will not get any free upgrade lol.
wait .. where did you read its getting a PS5 release?
Its strictly current-gen and simple back-compat with the upcoming consoles.
What a fkg waste… Everybody waiting for a Prince of Persia new game, but instead we got a remake… a fkg sh*ty remake.
Ubisoft India ? no wonder the games are full of sh.t
The original’s graphics were very bland, but the game play and time conventions felt really good. Game play was smooth, too. If this team can nail that, then I say success. Maybe that is their goal here, to make it feel as good or better than the original and also be playable on many different consoles and PCs, as I doubt the team is large enough to make custom versions for each platform.
If this remake makes this game more accessible to today’s gamers, then what’s the harm? And it is a remake since they are using a different engine than the original, and not just going in and fixing up textures, aesthetics.
The original is already accessible for “today’s gamers” (whatever that means), WTF are you talking about? this remake looks like a waste of time (like most remakes/remasters).
To play the original game right now, you’d need either a PC (and preferably a controller), an original Xbox or a PS3.
Believe it or not, some people don’t own a PC, let alone a PS3 or Original Xbox.
You can play that game on any potato, it plays perfectly fine with keyboard and mouse. And people who doesnt own a PS2, Gamecube, original Xbox, Xbox 360 or PS3 (for the awful “remasters”) probably are too young to appreciate the original game or don’t care about it in the first place anyways.
So the remake is made for them? i can’t follow your logic (or lack of it) even when it’s clearly a nostalgia bait for those who did play the original….like i said, unnecesary crap. You are quite naive…
You got me there. I must be naive. Only true, refined gamers would own a PS2, Gamecube, original Xbox, Xbox 360 or PS3. Thank you for setting me straight. Have a nice day, good sir.
its been in development for 2½ years, had a peak developers of 170… how in gods name is it possible to have more people work on the remake for longer than the full original project and still have it look subpar?
Too much curry in drink leads to graphics that stink……
They are blaming the engine ? Hahahaha POP 2008 and Forgotten sands are on the same f@cking engine. Stop finding excuses for this lazy con job and fix this mess.
NO NO NO NO thats anvil not anvil NEXT, which gave us the masterpiece that is ac unity.
Yes i am just messing with you.
Sounds like the first problem was using the Assassin’s engine. I know tons of games use it but this probably should have been made on Unreal.
More like Ubisoft Wahmen India!
sh*t. I’m worried.
I just hope they won’t destroy my childhood memory of playing this game.
How do you know that are women bro and what does it matter? The men have been doing dogschitt work as well in that company and many other company. Last time I checked a man hailed naughty dog, forced the veteran woman out that have given us so many master pieces and now he wants us to play with/as Trannies. Bruh, enough of the cookie cutter internet bullschit lines. Don’t be lazy, you can do better than that.
“it’s not like the same Prince of Persia from 2008”- jfc, the guy didn’t even play the original they remake
https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/5e50c0ccc7c60b1f74f73bcfbfb10d50e536e73a9b4766ba75ab4adab2915dac.jpg
clever ??
looks like dog$$it
“Eastern Europe why not add those teams also to the developers it would have been with beautiful women and no pozz too”
CDProjekt says hi, and what if Ubisoft don’t want beutiful women and plenty of pozz instead?
https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/d5fb12c24f4478008dd081740c9c5d4511f9c53490fe9ee8b13b4f2810edfafd.jpg
“The main challenge was to create a game where we had to play on the nostalgia and we have to give it the modern twist. Keeping this balance intact is important.”
That broken a*s Indian English.
Damn this article brought out the inner racist out of the DSOG commentators.
It’s better to eat than talk

This is way better already
lol bravo ubisoft india , now the prince looks like some 5hitty indian guy , i bet this prince will drink piss instead of water to restore his health
Never hire Indians to do anything
That game is supposed to have cartoon graphics style, not sure what they could do to make it looks 2020, apart of improving the textures, lights and shadows. They could completely remake the models, but not sure if it’s a good idea for this one. My favorite is Warrior Within, that one is not so cartoonish, I have more hopes in that remake, if they do it.
Instead of admitting that they have been force to use an un-approriated engine as it was a milk cow in the past, so the top (maybe bad CEO?) thinking that it will be a holy engine for all kind of games ; also, what kind of Earth do they tell us that such unique visual, in 2020?
If it was a smaller indie team I wouldnt dream of ripping on it, but an Indie team would probably be more honest and tell it like it is.
Hard to believe they were straight faced in their defense. Well who knows, it was a written response right? Maybe they were laughing their a**es off.
All I could perceive is, “we are not capable, nor experienced to remake a really good game that requires actual talent to be remade!”
They are working with 170 dedicated employees + additional external resources on an existing engine, WTF?! Indie devs with < 10 guys make 100X better games. CLEARLY, they have a team highly unskilled!
Everyone do yourselves a favor and play the original with some ReShade and 4k DSR. Stay away from this abomination!
I was with you till Crytek. They are trash and has been so ever since their bait and switch with Hunt: Horrors Of The Gilded Age. Then they come with their Fuqing Epic Exclusivity, when they don’t even use Unreal Engine. I’m with you with everything else but Crytek is a skinny Stinking Vag! And no body what a skinny Vag. We like that Phat Meaty Creamy Juicy Pu$$.
I bet it will also be very heavy on the performance side …. we all know how badly optimized Ubisoft games are…
they really should hire blackmyth wukong devs to make this.. ubisoft really going down the drain. 2020 games looks worst than 2010. then they blame prince of persia didn’t sell well…
It could have been an update freely available for the owner’s of the original game lols… telling that Anvil isn’t able to handle the rewind feature? what kind of stupid excuse is this I really didn’t get it.
When Bethesda ask Indian studio to remake Doom 3,this is the result… https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/54e8d5e6fc563a4d8de373ba91dffbab7b185c5d26584b43aa18b00f67d173ba.jpg
It’s sad that if this game does poorly that Ubisoft will probably just think people don’t care about the franchise and not that the developers delivered a bad product.
UBISOFT INDIA https://media1.giphy.com/media/aqQKCbXzRz5sc/giphy.gif
It’s still likely better in every aspect to the original. It’s just unfortunate that modifying the Anvil engine for the rewind and slow-mo aspects was so resource-consuming for the team.
You’d think that with AC being a spiritual successor to PoP, the engine’s mechanics would be more ready for the challenge.
