This 4.3GB AI-enhanced HD Mod brings high quality textures and normal maps to Half-Life: Source

Modder ‘Coomer’ has released a brand new version of his AI Uspcale Mod for Half-Life Source. This new version adds normal maps to almost all textures. Thankfully, though, the modder has not added bump maps to the Xen levels.

This pack uses a batch of generated normal maps with alpha channel to make dark parts of the textures non-reflective. As a result of that, the size of the mod is now around 4.38GB . Furthermore, the modder had to reduce the size of the normal maps to 512×512 due to the big file size. However, he does plan to generate better and bigger size normal maps as soon as he finds a good algorithm.

In order to showcase this mod, Coomer has released the following screenshots. These screenshots showcase both the new normal maps, as well as the AI-enhanced textures.

In order to improve the game’s default textures, the modder used Topaz Labs AI Gigapixel software. As such, this classic Half-Life game can now look sharp and modern, and maintain its original art style.

Have fun!

  1. Looks good but ehhhh…. I bought Black mesa and gave up on it an hour in. Half life was amazing for it’s time but now… ugh… I can’t play it. I wasn’t into the gameplay. It felt too outdated to enjoy.

  2. HL Source, a broken remaster before the trend of broken remasters, among tons of issues, it has completely broken texture tiling, it will look horrible in some places with detailed textures, better play the original with mods or just go for Black Mesa, you can’t polish a turd

  3. The modder says that most textures come from the “ReSrced” mod for vanilla Half-Life.
Considering that the source version is vastly inferior on all aspects (including graphics, unlike what people think), you might as well stick to the original game.
(Original retail “WON” version is also gold.)

On a side note, the “ReSrced” mod is actually really cool.
It manages to preserve the original look completely, unlike Black Mesa, obviously.
Original textures are extremely blurry, and this mod manages to make it look like the way I remembered it, funnily enough.

  4. Lately there’s a few HL Source mod news dropping here, which I like. Not a hater at all, but it’s like these modders are working on an inferior version out of all the versions of HL.

HL:Source was a major disappointment for us HL fans. The single player wasn’t received all that well and they never did fix the DM version, and it’s no where near as good as the remake – Black Mesa.

So, it’s cool there’s people modding it, ….it’s interesting. Can’t get enough news that’s HL related these days since there’s not much anymore. But interesting just enough to check out the screenshots and read about it, cant think of anyone in my HL community that would actually install HL Source again. Weird choice that people mod this version of it.

      It’s not weird.
The original version doesn’t properly support mods, especially not high res textures and other graphics enhancements.
