E3 2020 will be most likely cancelled, announcement possibly coming tomorrow [UPDATE: It’s official]

E3 2020 was an event we were all looking forward to. Sure thing, Sony will not be there, however Microsoft, Devolver and Ubisoft were still planning to hold their annual press conferences. However, it appears that this won’t happen this year as ESA will most likely cancel the event.

The reason behind this cancellation is obvious. Coronavirus. Similarly to GTC 2020, E3 2020 will be most likely cancelled. According to reports, an official announcement will be coming tomorrow.

Kotaku’s Jason Schreier is also reporting similar news. From the looks of it, ESA is still consulting with publishers regarding this event. Still, it appears that it’s a matter of time until ESA cancels this year’s E3 event.

E3 2020 would have been a pretty important gaming event, as Microsoft was planning to reveal the next Xbox console. Furthermore, we’d be getting our first glimpse at some next-gen games. Not only that, but there were rumours about the next Batman and the next Harry Potter game being unveiled during that event.

It will be interesting to see what publishers will do now. When will they announce their new games? Will they wait for Gamescom 2020?

UPDATE:

ESA has officially cancelled E3 2020.

“After careful consultation with our member companies regarding the health and safety of everyone in our industry–our fans, our employees, our exhibitors and our longtime E3 partners–we have made the difficult decision to cancel E3 2020, scheduled for June 9-11 in Los Angeles.

Following increased and overwhelming concerns about the COVID-19 virus, we felt this was the best way to proceed during such an unprecedented global situation. We are very disappointed that we are unable to hold this event for our fans and supporters. But we know it’s the right decision based on the information we have today.”

  1. Who looks forward to the lies and BS that come out of E3? Are you serious? E3 has been a joke for years now, them cancelling is actually really good news, honestly

  2. Coronavirus is likely just the perfect excuse, with Dorito Pope, EA, Activision-Blizzars and Sony (!) dropping E3 entirely.

  3. There hasn’t been an interesting E3 in 10 years, and that was just Konami’s s***show of a conference. In recent years companies don’t even bother showing up because they know they’ll be ridiculed on social media. It won’t be missed.

  4. This years E3 was shaping up into a dumpster fire anyways.
COVID-19 sure has spared a lot of ESA blushes.

  5. and nothing of value was lost.

Show the game trailers and shut up.

Which by the way are getting less and less lately.

  6. Sadly it’s probably for the best. As someone who has always wanted to visit E3 since the early days, its changed a lot. The whole event is not really geared towards actual gamers anymore. There’s also too many broken promises, false advertising and terrible business practices that’s now plaguing the industry.

Things seemed to have slowed down anyway within the last couple of years – less interesting AAA games from a lot of these publishers in my opinion. Still waiting on a new Splinter Cell and a true Beyond Good & Evil sequel, not whatever the hell this next title is becoming… I guess that’s the issue when things become too mainstream.

I’m still going to miss all the hype games used to generate back then. Nothing beats an unexpected announcement or gameplay reveals in front of live audiences. Those moments for me is what made this hobby so much more exciting. This new on-demand trend just pales in comparison for me.
