On December 8th, 2005 the original Ryu Ga Gotoku (Yakuza to us English speakers) was published for the Playstation 2 hardware in Japan. The franchise had a rocky transition to Western markets and at certain points throughout its history seemed destined to remain in Japan.
Not anymore as the IP found a larger Western audience starting with the release of Yakuza 0 for PS4. It’s now found its way to PC, and is even headed for Xbox’s Game Pass.
Sega’s announced a live stream to celebrate the anniversary of the franchise which will air on the 18th and feature Kazuma Kiryu’s voice actor Takaya Kuroda and the voice of new protagonist Ichiban Kasuga, Kazuhiro Nakatani.

i still don’t find it that appealing
Yeah, because of the love it gets from people, I figured I can’t go wrong, but it’s just unsatisfying to me. The story cutscenes were good and made me like the world, but controlling and the minute to minute discussions were bad for me. I think the third time I played it the part where I tried to convince a poser punk band to be hardcore or whatever was just too corny for me to identify with as even a fun or smart story.
Yakuza games tend to be unapologetically japanese, from culture stuff to stories to things that would be taboo in western games.
They can be super-serious drama in one scene and shounen battle in the next or something totally comedic and / or creepy.
They are definitely not for everyone. And it’s definitely not a crime if you don’t like them.
But I definitely like them. ^_^
Also really bad writing. REALLY bad writing. We can cover it up and say, well it’s a Japanese style and all, but that style is really bad and immature. That business about the poser punk bands was full of so much cringe and was completely two dimensional. Just one example.
“Haha, we are tough! We want to rock! Start your engines! Should I follow with get your pistons pumping!”… Is it intentionally trying to sound really bad? And then in that case, in the end isn’t it just bad? When see good acting and dialogue, if someone on screen is frightened then they can act frightened but they don’t have to cartoonishly hide behind a tiny telephone pole or hold both of their hands to their mouths and be shaking like crazy. If a character in Jurassic World did that it would look stupid.
It’s a style, and I get that it’s intentionally meant to be cartoony and silly like that, but I also think that it should still be labeled as bad writing. Bad writing for adults to be appreciating! Fine writing for children. Not insulting your taste, I am glad you like it! Kinda jealous that you get to enjoy it and I just cannot.

I don’t know where you are getting your numbers from, but as far as i am aware, it sold around 120k on it’s first week on Japan only. Today as it is a niche title the number must be around the 300k to 500k worldwide
So i imagine, seeing as is a side title in the Yakuza series which is sells around 300k to 1m (Latest entry) that is not even close to have be considered as “bombed”.
Maybe expanding the platform could breath new life in the game aka sales?
Well PS4 boxart claims it’s only “PS4 console exclusive” so….
But it’s only has Yakuza-style gameplay. The story and setting are very different.
Oh you mean like how Nioh, Nier and Yakuza 0 also claimed to be ? Pleasy we all know how that works. While sure the story and the setting is vastly different it’s still the same team behind the Yakuza series so my guess i should be pretty good.

Don’t let them get away with sub par work. This isn’t a new idea like VR controls; the industry had done proper KB/M controls for PC games before, and not doing it correctly in 2019 is just inexcusable.
