Half Life Alyx feature

Half-Life: Alyx has been officially announced, first details, screenshots and gameplay trailer

And the time has finally come. Valve has officially revealed its new Half-Life VR game, Half-Life: Alyx. The company unveiled the first details about it, as well as its first screenshots. Furthermore, you can find below its debut gameplay trailer.

Half-Life: Alyx is set in the 20 year time gap between Half-Life and Half-Life 2. The game will be using Source 2 Engine and will feature a single-player, story-driven linear FPS campaign. The game will also heavily utilize physics and will include a physical player body.

As Valve noted, Half-Life: Alyx is a new full-length game built from the ground up by Valve for virtual reality.

As the game’s description reads:

“Immerse yourself in deep environmental interactions, puzzle solving, world exploration, and visceral combat.

Lean to aim around a broken wall and under a Barnacle to make an impossible shot. Rummage through shelves to find a healing syringe and some shotgun shells. Manipulate tools to hack alien interfaces. Toss a bottle through a window to distract an enemy. Rip a Headcrab off your face and throw it at a Combine soldier.”

Last but not least, a set of Source 2 tools for building new environments will ship with the game. These tools will enableany player to build and contribute new environments for the community to enjoy.

Half-Life Alyx will come out in March 2020.

Enjoy!

    1. meh, graphics are a bit dated, pretty good for vr though and its essentially every linear scripted shooter but in vr.

      Its ok.

          1. “They said if the community didn’t like Half-Life: Alyx the ip is going to die for ever.”

So they are basically holding the franchise hostage? Not surprising, they know exactly what people want and still act tone deaf on purpose. Black Mesa Source and Episode 3 mods looks more exciting(and also generate more hype) than this garbage.

  1. Don’t care about this indie crap so I bought it only because it’ll give exclusive content in CS:GO. Peace fellas.

    1. Lmao people wondering why Valve doesn’t bother with a real half life, look no further. Don’t care if he is trooling, it’s the reality of things.

  2. As a huge fan of all the Half Life games, I have zero confidence in Valve to make a good game anymore. They haven’t made anything besides recycled multiplayer games that they copied from modders since 2011, except Artifact which was a flop.

Also VR doesn’t interest me at all, especially not for the cost of entry and the continued lack of “must play” games.

    1. see, when you say valve, who is that? Bioware and bethesda not to mention blizzard are not what they were many years ago, nor is obsidian, why you think valve is valve? I doubt they are the same people at this point.

      1. Agreed. I believe all of writers from the earlier Half Life games have long since left (including Mark Laidlaw).

        1. Erik Wolpaw and Jay Pinkerton worked on the game before departure, also Wolpaw has returned to Valve in early 2019 as part time contractor

      2. They are in a way better situation than when they begin, not an excuse to make a crap game regardless of who works there.

  3. Someone needs to make a Virgin Alyx vs Chad Doom Slayer meme considering they’re facing off against each other in March 2020.

  4. I told you that the next half life game will be vr, as it is the next step for fps pioneers like valve and wont feature Gordon Freeman.

But a prequel with alyx? Didnt expect that.

    Whats with the accents?

      1. Man just open your mind a minute, why you’re like that ? Some things need time to shine, we’re witnessing the baby step of this technology, back in the time people were afraid by cars and preferred horses just because it was new for them

        1. “back in the time people were afraid by cars and preferred horses just because it was new for them”

Except this new technology is the reverse: Getting people to give up cars and go back to horses.

          1. Man such a waste, you don’t seem to be stupid, actually i think you’re smart but something is blocking your thoughts, maybe you are just allergic to VR and that’s all, it doesn’t seem to take gaming backwards, not this actual game at least, the fact you can interact with every object with your hands just like you do in a normal day isn’t what i call downgrade, you can play with physics in new way, just like old days HL2 when it came, and i think it’s just a glimpse of what VR can provide in the future…
I don’t want to be rude or something, but if you really hate VR, just ignore VR news, why being so salty, it’s not like you’re forced to buy a headset, it’s not like classic games are going to disappear…

          2. “the fact you can interact with every object with your hands just like you do in a normal day isn’t what i call downgrade”

You can’t really, there is no feedback between picking a virtual can, you won’t feel the weight, etc. Take for example Deus Ex Adam Jensen ability to break walls applied to VR: The gamer would be just throwing punches in the air in order to mimic Jensen’s ability, which is kinda ridiculous, and one of the pitfalls of the motion sensing controls/hardware.

          3. There is a reason VR value is more in the simulation realm: Driving simulation, flight simulators, etc. But that doesn’t translate well with gaming in general, where we are used to play as super heroes and such, a VR superman would be more slow paced than a superman controlled by Kb and mouse and hence, less fun. You can also see this play out in this HL Alyx trailer, it’s way more slow than a traditional half life game.

          4. Yeah it’s comes with downsides like everything else, but you know no one is forcing us to buy a VR headset, and it’s not like it’s HL3 “You want the sequel ? Get VR” thing, it’s a prequel, some sort of spin off so ironically it’s an important entry to the franchise, more like an experimental one, chill out nothing is going to change your habits

          5. “Consume product, get excited for next product”.

Amazing how you try to deflect every valid criticism as “chill out dude”. Could the shilling be more obvious?

          6. The same as you being critical or borderline sarcastic over what i consider valid arguments about VR, we’re not too different, and of course we don’t have to agree about everything. And yes chill out dude, we’re discussing games, it’s entertainment not politics

          7. I don’t deny the potential of VR , and already cited it’s good points (Hint: It’s largely in the camp of simulation and not so much in gaming). I also didn’t claim VR will never take off, but the criticism of HL Alyx boils down mostly for the fact that VR fps is mostly dumbed down on rail shooters, and the trailer shows that to be the case. But hey, some people are really excited that they can move a cardboad box with their hand instead of pressing “e”…

          8. And what’s your problem with them being excited about that ? Why it bothers you so much ? Will this be a problem for the industry and gaming ? Man there are terrible news about gaming everyday, SJW agendas, Microtransactions, terrible PC ports, Epic Exclusivity sh*t… I Don’t consider HL Alyx or VR Headsets to be part of the problem at all, it’s a market that is trying to grow, it has start somewhere, to get feedback, and perhaps evolve to a better form, there’s no problem at all, i can understand that you are pissed off about a new HL being only in VR, but i don’t understand your pessimism about VR overall…

          9. “And what’s your problem with them being excited about that ? Why it bothers you so much ?”

I see more negativity around this title than enthusiasm. The people enthusiastic about it are, shall we say, suspicious.

” i can understand that you are pissed off about a new HL being only in VR”

So you can connect the dots? Good, then you should consider that Valve announces this VR game in the worst context possible: 12 years of no Half Life related official content and suddenly a new VR game that doesn’t advance the story and it is suspiciously being done to sell VR headsets. So much for fear of fan backlash.

“but i don’t understand your pessimism about VR overall…”

Speaking of tech in general, i don’t need to be excited about the internet when it was just a military project. Sure, it will/or can be great in the future, but consumers are not the ones who will make that possible. Basically messing with prototypes isn’t my idea of fun.

          10. “I don’t want to be rude or something, but if you really hate VR, just ignore VR news, why being so salty,”

            Umm, because it’s Half Life.

          11. Valve then: Man we are SO SCARED of working of half life 3 due to fan pressure. They will literally kill us if we fail.

Valve now(12 years later): Here’s the brand new HL VR game so you dorks can buy our hardware.. huh, why are you so mad?

    1. Amazing? It does look good, but that’s because of the strong art direction, on a technical level, aside from some of the volumetric lighting, it looks pretty outdated and plastic.

      1. To be fair, it can’t look super great since VR demands extra hardware horse power. It’s still a crap game just for pulling this scam, don’t get me wrong.

    1. I could live with an outsourced episode, or a new Blue shift or Opposing force expansion, but this… what a load of crap.

        1. It was Arkane, and they where making episode 4. Sad when a canceled game looks more exciting than the garbage they are trying to bring.

  5. Hilarious seeing all the VR haters pretending this looks bad because they desperately want to play it and either have a pointless vendetta against VR, or simply can’t afford it and refuse to admit it. This looks amazing, can’t wait to play it.

    1. It doesn’t look “bad”, but it does look like every other VR game. The player stands around and shoots / throws things at moving targets. It’s not “Half Life”, it’s a VR shooting gallery with a Half Life visual theme.

          1. Yeah bro i’m really excited to do mundane things with my hands. There is a reason you see so little shooting in Valve’s next on rail shooter game. Like i said above, they could adapt the game to Mouse and keyboard, just press “e” to do the mundane crap you do in VR.

      1. Way to pull stuff our your butt. This has all the elements of Half-Life and more, unless you’re mad it’s Alyx and not Gordon, in which case I guess you never played Blue Shift either.

        1. Valve fans: We want a new Half life game continuing where Ep 2 left off plz…

Valve, 12 years late: How about a VR exclusive spin off no one wanted so you buy this game and my overpriced hardware?

          GTFO with your BS.

        2. Neither BlueShift and Opposing Force were made in a desperate atempt to sell VR units… so better shut your butt.

      2. Kind of like how every FPS you sit in your chair flicking your mouse and tapping on a keyboard? Your logic on this is laughable. We get it, you hate VR. I don’t own VR but I have a friend that does. Playing any…ANY VR game is a totally different experience than sitting on your pimply a*s barely moving your body.

        1. Guess what, if i want to move my body, i’ll go to the gym. You are basically shilling for a glorified motion sensing controller like Wii, Kinect, etc.

          1. Oh yeah? Guess what, we both know you will never see the inside of a gym. Every video game you will every play is a glorified version of minesweeper. You do nothing different with the input. See how that works with “fnd logic”. You have never experienced VR if you are trying to compare it to Wii. Just the visual immersion alone is a game changing experience. Your silly argument is simply “why ever eat prime rib when chicken fingers fill you up just as much”.

          2. “Your silly argument is simply “why ever eat prime rib when chicken fingers fill you up just as much”.”

So i guess you only play VR games now since it is as superior as you claim right? Name me the VR games you currently play.

“You have never experienced VR if you are trying to compare it to Wii.”

I never played a Wii or Kinect either, so maybe i shoudn’t talk about those according to your (lack of)logic?

“Every video game you will every play is a glorified version of minesweeper. You do nothing different with the input.”

Nice strawman, still better than giggling my arms in the air like a r&tard…

        2. I’m not talking about what you do irl, the problem with VR is that you stand around IN-GAME. There’s no movement because that would make people motion-sick. Without movement there’s not much left of video games, VR games prove this.

    2. It’s not about VR being bad or something, you moron. Is about the fact that we HL fans have waited for a new HL game for years. We wanted a sequel, a ending to this franchise, we didn’t wanted a damn reboot that is set between HL1 and HL2.

      1. Why bother releasing something like that when there’s so many dirtbag gamers like yourself who just dog on everything no matter what? I’m glad Valve is moving on without you people, enjoy the dust.

        1. Dirtbag gamers? You mean the people who supported the HL community when Valve left it left 4 dead? (pun intended) And now they release a new game just to milk what was left of this franchise, instead of putting an end to it? You are a sheep, and a shill. Because real gaymers like you EGS, EA, and Bethesda still exist.

      2. Did you ever think that the reason it is not a sequel is because they knew exactly how all you b*chers and moaners would react? They don’t owe you anything child. Maybe they respect the franchise more than you think and will in fact release a true sequel eventually.

        1. Uh no, it is not a sequel because they want more money, and they know HL is a succesful franchise, so they will milk whatever it is left from the previous games, before actually making a new one.
bic*ers and moaners? Ok. So… you’re better for being a shill and a fanboy? No. You are just pathethic, you just eat whatever Valve gives you. The real fans have been waiting since 2006 for a sequel. And all we get is a spit in the face, a VR game, knowing the fact that only a very small minority own a VR. That’s a fact. They appeal to the minority, not at the majority. That’s why the game will fail. Uh yeah… they owe us so many years of waiting, boomer. 15 years of “we can’t really say anything about HL3” and all other crap.
They respect it? How? By left it for dead 15 years? By lying to the fans? By spitting in their face with a VR game no one asked for? Get your head out of your @ss, boy.

    3. What’s so exciting about having to do every mundane activity with VR instead of, you know, shooting stuff? Can’t wait for the next Half-life: Time crisis edition, just with more lame stuff.

    1. They can remake every Half Life in the Source 2 engine if they wanted, it’s just like they don’t want, not that i blame them mind you, their fanbase get’s what they f-ing deserve for supporting Valve thru the years.

    1. Valve could have made Half-Life 3 years ago, but only chose to create another game in the series to promote VR. I’ll pass.

      1. I really wish after 2 years or so from now we got HL3 (the real thing, the thing all the fans around the world deserve) but no, i don’t think we are ever going to get it, and it hurt really hurt. They say if the fans didn’t like Half-Life: Alyx, the HL ip is doomed for ever. and to be honest i don’t know how much people are going to buy VR just for this game, it’s too damn expansive.

    2. If Campo Santo have their way then your new surname will be Freeperson and there won’t be any white showing in your new avatar!

      1. Not too please they changed up the voice of Alex from HL2. Just waiting to see if she has that 50 shades of blue in her hair.

  6. To the people constantly yammering about wanting HL3, it’s not going to happen, because only one of the HL writers from the original team remain.

Why the hell would you want a butchered, absolutely not the same written, sequel to HL2?. If you’re a fan, a die hard dedicated fan, surely you would see reason to want the entire team there, to write the story as it was written years ago, instead of being bastardised by a new-age team, who were never there for the first two games. Surely you fans, you puritans do not want Valve repeating a 343 studios moment, like what happened with Halo, surely you wouldn’t eat up garbage writing.

  7. I argued with some Darth Buzzer dude in the rumor about this crap game, and he claimed this game can’t be ported to PC for some reason. What a load of BS, the reason this game will probably not get a non VR version is because it would expose the scam for what it is: a watered down on rail shooter fps (even more on rails than traditional HL’s) with some light puzzles.

    1. I think they care more about HL than its fans.

Probably why they didn’t do something generic like a pic shooter

  8. Looks like an incredible VR game but that is not what I wanted and what the majority wanted.

I am massively happy for the people that have VR units and that Valve is actually making a real Half Life game again but for My self that does not have a VR unit this just makes Me depressed.

So weird… pretty much no one has VR(it’s a niche market) or most importantly VR + a high end comp so why not just make Half Life 3 or make this game a conventionally game for PC, PS4, Xbox One, PS5 and Xbox Two? To Me this will never make any sense unless they also made Half Life 3 along side this game and it will be announced at the Game Awards/or soon.

How many sales do they expect? I doubt it will be past 100K, anyone know how many PC VR units where sold to date? Is it millions? They must have done this to sell more VR units so that seems pretty obvious and why they did it I am sure.

    1. All thanks to muh innovashun. Funny how the devs state that they are scared sh!tless of HL3 because of fan pressure, but have no problem creating this crapstorm.

  9. Nice! Compatible with Oculus Rift and the Oculus Touch controllers while playable as a seated, standing or room-scale experience.

Quite expensive for a VR game though so it had better be a lengthy campaign with some replay value. Oh, and I hope the pathetic SJW game dev Campo Santo that Valve acquired haven’t had any involvement.

    1. Dorito Pope confirmed its a full campaign that he spent 15 hours in. As far as I know, Campo Santo are involved but not in writing where they’ve brought back Erik Wolpaw from both HL episodes and both Portals to write

  10. cant wait to watch my favorite Twitch streamer play it cuz Fck i wont pay 500 USD for something witch dont have normal games on it ….. beside VR p*rn

    1. Just get a used Oculus Rift. You can get them for $200 and you won’t have to upgrade your PC just to be able to push the higher pixel count of the Index. Makes all racing games 10x better and the only thing that has genuinely jump scared me in the past 10 years was Alien: Isolation VR mode.

    1. i would to if the lack of arms didnt stick out like a sore thumb and ruined the immersion…..yes i know why its done in vr games. Correct me if i am wrong but boneworks has arms.

        1. Total immersion would be some kind of Matrix-like scenario where your conscience is transported to the game or something like that. VR tech nowadays is stuck in the motion sensor control scenario, which can be good for some things, like driving games.

        2. It can make it worse because you only have control of the arms. Looking down and seeing a body thats moving it legs while you just press forward on a joystick is kinda weird in VR. Also none of the player models have a massive man package so I’m never going to feel truly immersed.

      1. they can’t track full arm length in motion (elbows etc), so it will be scripted and look unnatural i gues, but who knows.

    2. considering that a whole character isn’t being rendered, i would imagine there to be a little extra detail for some hands.

  11. Damn… I don’t even know why I even bother with the comments on this site anymore. it’s 90% people complaining about everything, trying to gloat about pirating things.

    1. It’s actually 100% true HAHA, but you know, a lot of them know what they’re talking about and are solid experienced gamers, such a bummer there’s a lot of negativity, the way the actual industry works doesn’t help either, not really their fault…

      1. I don’t have a vr but still im excited for the game to come out. This is great to see Valve pushing VR forward and releasing a new game in the Half-Life universe. This should be exciting news for gamers. Especially long time ones growing up and playing these games when they first came out. All new games are gonna need better gpu’s, graphics… thats just how it is.

        1. Wanna know what’s exciting? Black Mesa Source finally completing the Xen chapter, or the modders trying to recreate Episode 3 script in the SOurce, U4 engine.

          1. This is exciting too, I have Black Mesa on Steam since it entered Early Access and i’m waiting for Project Borealis and Boreal Alyph, doesn’t mean i’m not hyped for HL Alyx

          2. Out of the three, which one gives you more enthusiasm? For me, Black Mesa comes first (because i already played the free version and liked it), the Project Borealis and Boreal Alyph comes second and off course zero enthusiasm for HL Alyx.

          3. Once they announce the game as complete I am gonna start it up. It’s sitting in my Library just waiting. I am pumped!!

        2. Yeah, i’m really hyped too, even tho i’m like all the others here, most of the time tired of this industry lol But you know everyone has a view on this situation, and we can understand easily that making the new HL VR exclusive wasn’t going to be 100% well received, it’s all normal.
“This should be exciting news for gamers.”
I think so, it will be one day i guess, at the right time…

          1. It’s no different then say nintendo making a new zelda and announcing it for a new console. Cyberpunk coming out but needing a top of the line graphics card, Horizon zero dawn 2 being announced but needing a ps5 to play it. Same thing imo!

          2. Absolutely !! This is not the first game to be tied to a hardware, and surely not the last one

  12. Gentlemen, this doesn’t mean a classic HL3 is dead, actually it’s never been so alive, i know the majority of people are pissed off by the VR requirements, but this is a VR game and that’s all, Valve talked about this years ago, let’s see how all this works after release, for all the excited people, keep your expectations low and you’ll not be disappointed, and for all the pessimistic people, this is the early stage of a new technology, it has to start somewhere, like our actual hardware, mouse and keyboard and all this stuff started somewhere too, people used to be afraid by telegrams…

    1. HL3 future is in the hands of this VR game sucess, so why should people be happy about their favorite franchise being hold hostage for this?

  13. Kinda expected more graphics wise since Half Life 2 was revolution in that recard. I don’t like the floating hands.
I play it if it comes as non VR version

  14. They could have gotten my money… but instead they choose to make this. Ok.
    Youtube it is then.

Sad day indeed. This is just as bad as being a console exclusive. I even prefer if this was a console exclusive, at least a console wont need me to buy a new PC (my pc is rly good but still cant run VR), new headset, have free space in my room for it and.. well… they dont even sell those sets in my country, but they sell consoles.

ROFL, i prefer a console for Half Life. Valve, you fked up big time if you made me think that way.
