Doom 4 Vanilla mod for the classic Doom games is an amazing retro demake of Doom 2016, available for download

Doomworld’s member ‘Noiser’ has released an amazing mod for the classic Doom games. Doom 4 Vanilla basically demakes Doom 16 in Doom 1 or Doom 2. The modder has brought all of the enemies and weapons, and introduced some new maps. As such, this is a must-have mod for all Doom fans out there.

Doom 4 Vanilla has been under development for two years so it’s pretty cool witnessing the modder finally releasing it. As Noiser noted, Doom 4 Vanilla is full of dehacked tricks and with additional features, all under the limitations of the original Doom2.exe.

Some of the key features of this mod are the brightmaps for sprites and textures, the blood splats on floors and a custom palette with vivid tones. Moreover, it packs a new COLORMAP tint effects, and positions weapons on the center when fired. It also sports monsters with multiple abilities.

This mod also introduces some new demon abilities. For instance, the Mancubi can use flamethrowers and Revenants can use jetpacks. There are also some charging Pinkies, as well as insta-moving Summoners.

Doom 4 Vanilla works with any Doom source port, and you can download it from here.

Have fun!

  1. I’m not really into retro looking games, I grew up playing them and I also grew up watching the evolution of graphics and hardware. To me pushing the envelope of graphics is half of what keeps me interested in gaming…that being said, this is really impressive.

    1. Exactly how i feel when i see games like dusk, ion fury and wrath aeon of ruins.
I mean they are cool and im glad they exist and in a way they are impressive of the way they push old engines beyond what they were designed for, but i grew up on them and played them but i wanted those games with better graphics
And now for some reasons those old looking games are making a comeback the problem with those games is that the graphics are well…outdated and yes i will even dare say that even the gameplay is not fun anymore i never liked maze like level design that did not make any sense but i understood back then it was due to limitations.

Anyway seems like there is a demand for those games probably mostly from a nostalgic audience and yet i grew up with games that plays and look like that but im not eager to come back to them and i especially cant understand why digital foundry are making 20 minutes videos on those games as if they are cutting edge in any kind of way.

You want an old school kind of gameplay but with modern mechanics and contemporary graphics you have doom 2016 and wolfenstein the new order.

      1. I agree. Doom 2016 was the perfect balance of old and new. It realized games had evolved and brought a lot of that along for the ride. I have no interest in Dusk, Ion Fury and Aeon of Ruins because of the graphics, and I’m sure they miss out on a good deal of sales because of that. There’s one game coming out that you can toggle the pixelated look on and off so that might be interesting. It’s called Prodeus.

  2. The only thing amazing here is that this was made by dehacked. Not sure why would you punish yourself to show off.
