Recently Glumberland announced an exclusivity deal with Epic Games for its upcoming title, Ooblets. You can read more about it here. Glumberland’s decision did not sit well with many people.
Thousand user messages expressing disappointment have been sent to the developers. Many of these messages went overboard by attacking and threatening the devs. Neither Glumberland or Epic provided any evidence. So we cannot be certain regarding the specifics, but since Epic is getting more hate everyday I wouldn’t be surprised if the whole situation is actually real. Though the numbers do sound a bit exaggerated.

The announcement of Ooblets highlighted a disturbing trend which is growing and undermining healthy public discourse, and that’s the coordinated and deliberate creation and promotion of false information, including fake screenshots, videos, and technical analysis, accompanied by harassment of partners, promotion of hateful themes, and intimidation of those with opposing views.
Epic is working together with many game developers and other partners to build what we believe will be a healthier and more competitive multi-store world for the future. We remain fully committed, and we will steadfastly support our partners throughout these challenges. Many thanks to all of you that continue to promote and advocate for healthy, truthful discussion about the games business and stand up to all manners of abuse.

What happened exactly for people to send such messages ?
Devs decided to go Epic Exclusive route while also being total a**holes about it. They trashed their Patreon supporters calling them names like entitled, or toxic. They told them on the official Discord that there are should be angry on climate change instead. One person asked about currency support in EGS since he can’t get the game in his country and was called by devs entitled.
They also erased from their subreddit a lot of EGS topics.
Basically, you reap what you saw.

I’ve never once posted anything to or about the developers, and explicitly stated I don’t agree with every type of backlash they’re seeing. But they talked down to their audience first. How do you expect people to react when your first foot forward is smug, condescending, and insulting? They obviously haven’t spent two seconds on the internet if they didn’t anticipate how this will play out.
I agree with everything you said except making it about the SJW buzzword. It is awful PR (unless it’s intentional and works, then, well done) and while death threats and all that is ridiculous, it’s a well-known expectation and he shouldn’t be surprised about it.

This just reaffirms my belief that Epic either hates or doesn’t care about gamers/their customers. From day 1, they release a broken/under developed launcher who’s only selling points are marketted to developers instead of those who actually use and pay into the platform. After several rounds of backlash, they announce that user reviews will be optional due to review bombing (when Steam had already figured out a way to appease devs and customers on this). Now, Tim comes out in support of a developer being a condescending pr*ck and insulting their fans and customers.
I unfortunately believe Epic is here to stay, but I haven’t been and won’t be buying any games from them.
