3D Realms has announced that Ion Maiden, the old-school first-person shooter developed by Voidpoint and published by 3D Realms and 1C Entertainment, will release under a new title to avoid legal issues with a certain popular heavy metal band.
Ion Maiden will be now called Ion Fury, will be fully released on August 15th, and a brand new trailer has been released for it.
Lovingly crafted in Build engine which powered ‘90s classics such as Duke Nukem 3D, Blood and Shadow Warrior, Ion Fury fuses nostalgic looks with today’s technology to create the ultimate shooter. Modern features like auto-saves, improved physics and map interactivity, headshots, widescreen functionality and controller support, simply weren’t possible back then, but Ion Fury brings the best of both worlds.
Mike Nielsen, CEO of 3D Realms, said:
“After careful consideration, we’ve decided to rename our first-person-shooter Ion Maiden to Ion Fury. A lot of thought went into this, but most importantly it would be a disservice to our loyal fanbase and the fantastic developers, to drag out a long lawsuit. The amazing gameplay, interactivity and pure fun, is what makes Ion Fury a great game. Not the title.”
Enjoy!

The release date is a pleasant surprise, the forced name change is an annoying one. Glad we get another great old school FPS. DUSK, Amid Evil, Ion Fury and DOOM Eternal all release within one year of each other. Great time to be a fan of the genre.

I know it is kind of obvious (at least to me), but why not say that the band who is suing is called Iron Maiden? Afraid to be sued as well? They also sued because they think the protagonist is a gender swapped band member or something like that…
Really? Iron Maiden, a hilariously antiquated band, is causing issues over the words “iron maiden”, which is a medieval torture device in the first place. Also, that’s why we have LOGOS. For differentiation.
Seriously, trademarking and copyrighting can go f*** themselves already.
LOL, that ”hilariously antiquated band”, that sold close to 100 million records, and whose last album from 2015 was their best selling album yet.
And the iron maiden being an actual medieval torture device is known to be a hoax.
Lol regardless if it was a hoax or not it existed in it’s form before the band. It’s irrelevant if it’s a real or not. The term iron maiden existed before the band they didn’t make up the name.
And shut up with the gloating. Again irrelevant if they make tons of money. They were acting like little b**ches crying about a title “ion maiden” which is not even the same as iron maiden nor is the logo even the same.
If you actually read what the lawsuit was you would see how retarded they are. Everything they complained about was not even infringement on their copyright. But they know this
They know a small company can’t afford a legal battle even if 3drealms would win it would of costed them alot of money and time.
This is straight bullying. And no amount of album sales makes that right.
Iron Maiden had nothing to do with this,. It was their lawyers and that’s SOLELY because Iron Maiden has a themed video game in development.
Gloating? Dude I don’t even like Iron Maiden.
MAtter of Life and Death was garbage though. Was there a newer album?
2 since that one.
remember when bethesda sued notch for scrolls?
hilariously antiquated i.e the most popular metal band of all time that was crucially important to the development of ALL metal, is “antiquated”. Hilarious.
Lewd avatar profile. :3
Damn stupid decision, the name was catchy and fitting, now just generic and bland. There would also be no grounds for legal action.
Not a stupid decision. Yes they would of won the suit but that would of taken a long time and alot of money.
Do you know how long and costly court battles are?
3drealms are thinking of you the gamer. It’s more important to them to release the game so you can play it instead delaying it even more.
So be thankful.
Is it PSOne exclusive?
if only psx could do those graphics.
Seriously? Changing name on game cos potencial Iron maiden copyright?? What a bunch of pu**ies!
Never a fan of iron maiden, Still buying this game. Ion fury dosent exactly roll off the tongue however.

Listening to Ion Fury baybeeeeee… wait, what?!
“what makes Ion Fury a great game. Not the title.”
Not a great title though Ion Guardian would be better than this. Or Ion Valkyrie.
and what about amc tc?
Unbelievable.
I’ve now lost respect for Iron Maiden for not stopping their lawyers.
Finished 3 chapters out of 5 (quit, because it was getting too tedious) and I can say that if you care about slaughtering enemies in appealingly designed levels then you’ll enjoy this. There isn’t a main story, only bosses after each chapter with some mechanics to defeat them. Weapons choice isn’t too shabby, though it kind of turns boring past Chapter 2 where you just have to grind and grind all over again Quake style levels.
3d realms had to wait 20 years for old school fps games to be trendy again so that they could release something they sort of know how to do, it’s so sad
the industry went through so much and they stopped evolving in 97
