GTA IV mods

Quake 3, Grand Theft Auto 5 & IV, F.E.A.R. & more with Reshade real-time ray tracing Global Illumination

YouTube’s ‘EiermannTelevision’ has shared some videos, showing Quake 3, Carmageddon, Grand Theft Auto 5, Grand Theft Auto 4, Half Life, F.E.A.R. and Star Wars Jedi Outcast with the latest Reshade mod that adds real-time ray tracing Global Illumination effects.

As we’ve already stated, this new Reshade (which is currently in an alpha stage) is being created by Pascal Gilcher and allows PC gamers to enable ray traced Global Illumination in all DX9, DX10 and DX11 games.

In all of the aforementioned titles, this new ray tracing technique improves the overall image quality. It’s pretty obvious that older games can benefit from this new Reshade, however it comes with a significant performance hit and there are some graphical glitches present due to the way Reshade executes this new RT technique.

For instance, objects that the player does not see are not being ray traced, resulting in some visual imperfections. What this basically means is that you will see the ambient occlusion effects  being applied on the fly when you turn around corners or when you explore small interiors.

We don’t know whether the beta or the final version of this Reshade mod will fix this issue, however, we can safely say that it is indeed improving the overall image quality of older games.

Enjoy the videos!

  1. Fear looks like what i expected ambient occlusion in games to look like back in the old days. Jedi outcast looks like what volumetric shadows were supposed to look like.

  2. So this is basically a high-quality AO solution that works on top of screen-space effects in world space?

Noice. But tbh this isn’t really utilizing Ray tracing well. There’s plenty of other uses for raytracing that are much more appropriate.

      1. Well pretty much anything is better if implemented at it’s core.
However, since the authors of ReShade managed to find a way to do raytracing using only runtime data, they obviously have access to the scene geometry. So idk why they limited their Ray traced effects to AO.

    1. No. It’s screen space path tracing and even provides Global Illumination like shading for objects where the light would bounce off of adjacent surface with appropriate colouring aswell.

  3. shadow of war needs something like this so bad. avp2 and dead space series would also look nice i think.

  4. i got the most recent version of reshade on the official reshade website and it doesn’t have rt option, are these people from reshade team or what?
edit: nevermind, it’s only available to backers.

  5. Warning, old screenshot, as old as the hills, that is used for the article isn’t a shot from any of the videos.

  6. we can safely say that it is indeed improving the overall image quality of older games.

Please, there’s barely any difference in the videos on top of the performance cost, not worth it at all.

You can get similar visuals with SSAO alone, without having such a huge hit in performance.

This doesn’t compare to real RT implementation.

  7. 1…. don’t use a screenshot that has nothing to do with any of this.
2…. ya it’s improved but if you don’t have it… i can’t say you are missing out really either.

  8. So, it takes around 20$ per month to this guy to try his Alpha-state Reshade mod. Just for heads up for people rushing to download and try it.

  9. I’d honestly not be surprised if NVdia implements such a shader within the NGE suite in the future. They already gave us partial “Reshade” control with the “Game Filter” addition.

Won’t hold my breath either though 🙂
