Modder ‘LordEmil1‘ has revealed a way via which gamers can play Borderlands Game of the Year Edition in third-person mode. This mod will be perfect for all those that are planning to replay the first Borderlands game in anticipation of Borderlands 3.
As the modder noted, aiming with 3rd person isn’t always perfect, so players might have to switch back to first person for a few seconds to “reset” their aim. Now while the aiming isn’t perfect, and we don’t know whether it’s possible to further improve it as we’re basically looking at .INI tweaks, it is still great.
Moreover, players can use the cursor to activate objectives/pick things up while they are in third-person mode, and when they scope in the game will switch back to first person mode.
Last but not least, when you go into the “Fight for your Life” you’ll be put back into first person mode, and you’ll have to press your bind to go back into third person mode twice.
Those interested can enable the third-person mode via this guide.
- Go to your config folder located here: C:\Users\Username\Documents\My Games\Borderlands Game of the Year\WillowGame\Config
and open both WillowInput.ini, and WillowGame.ini - In WillowInput.ini, find: [WillowGame.WillowPlayerInput]
Add this after any existing keybindings:
Bindings=(Name=”FirstPersonZoom”,Command=”advancedbutton bAdvancedButtonAux5″,Control=False,Shift=False,Alt=False,LeftTrigger=False,RightTrigger=False,bIgnoreCtrl=False,bIgnoreShift=False,bIgnoreAlt=False)
Bindings=(Name=”ThirdPersonZoom”,Command=”advancedbutton bAdvancedButtonAux5 | Camera FirstPerson | OnRelease Camera ThirdPerson”,Control=False,Shift=False,Alt=False,LeftTrigger=False,RightTrigger=False,bIgnoreCtrl=False,bIgnoreShift=False,bIgnoreAlt=False)
Bindings=(Name=”FirstPersonToggle”,Command=”Camera FirstPerson | setbind RightMouseButton FirstPersonZoom | setbind F1 ThirdPersonToggle”,Control=False,Shift=False,Alt=False,LeftTrigger=False,RightTrigger=False,bIgnoreCtrl=False,bIgnoreShift=False,bIgnoreAlt=False)
Bindings=(Name=”ThirdPersonToggle”,Command=”Camera ThirdPerson | setbind RightMouseButton ThirdPersonZoom | setbind F1 FirstPersonToggle”,Control=False,Shift=False,Alt=False,LeftTrigger=False,RightTrigger=False,bIgnoreCtrl=False,bIgnoreShift=False,bIgnoreAlt=False)
Bindings=(Name=”F1″,Command=”ThirdPersonToggle”,Control=False,Shift=False,Alt=False,LeftTrigger=False,RightTrigger=False,bIgnoreCtrl=False,bIgnoreShift=False,bIgnoreAlt=False) - Save WillowInput.ini, now right click the same file, go to properties, and set the it as read only. If you don’t the game will delete the commands and reset all of your current binds.
- You’ll have to customize your camera position/FOV to your liking, so go to WillowGame.ini and find: [WillowGame.WillowPawn]
You’ll find these values in that section:
CameraScale=5.0
CameraScaleRight=2.0
CameraScaleUp=1.0
Customize them to your liking, you’ll have to restart the game to see your changes take affect.(Make sure to save the file!)
Enjoy!

Thanks. I much prefer third-person shooters over first-person shooters.
the other way for me. i don’t mind playing in third person as long as animations are good like in rdr2. in games like borderlands or skyrim however, third person animations are rough and i can’t stand them.
Yeah ideally I want Rockstar or Ubisoft level animations in all my third-person shooters but that is not going to happen anytime soon. Its much easier & cheaper to make the game’s graphics look great than to make the animations look great like the biggest blockbuster AAA games.
Yeah I can imagine, whilst I personally don’t mind any, I do have a few friends who get motion sick playing FPS games, no matter how hard they try.
So lucky I don’t have that problem but it can be a bummer.
Borderlands being a problematic game when it comes to motion sickness, even I have motion sickness in this game yet I can play every other FPS in the world with no issues.
Liliths asscrack, of course :p
Is that her default outfit? Or just a mod?
Lilith has always had an asscrack. Its kind of an inside joke, they teased it fot BL3 too
Aha. Gotcha. I only played the first BL, for like, 2 hours. And in original first person. Now i have a reason to play in third person. lol
I don’t wanna be that guy, but what’s the “inside joke”, btw? It’s an “inside joke” because of her asscrack? 😀 I don’t get it.
ah, it’s just something borderlands fans joke about. There’s been memes n stuff. Not much else. I just assumed the video used in the article was intentional.
Those weapon rewards looks like hacks 😉
LVL 10 , opening area and ORANGE weapon from Scag yeah ofc
I did this the day it came out.. works for the original game, too.
This is not a MOD, and those very same commands where discovered almost a decade ago, and work in all Borderland games, so this wannabe taking credit for that?
Old is still boring IMO.
Go. Away. Hoe.
If I recall well If you use FOV 90 the aiming works just fine!
After witnessing the reports of Randy Pitchford’s crying and blame-shifting on Twitter in response to the backlash over Borderlands 3/Epic Games Store I pirated this game. Cheers.
It’s too bad this could never be done for Thief 2014 (unreal Engine as well). I desperately wanted to play that game in 3rd person. Because it does have a 3rd person camera and no one could ever seem to set it free. The character in the game switches to 3rd person when he’s doing wide angled climbing sequences.
As the others have said, this is a very old tweak & not a mod. And yes it’s buggy — the environment causes bullets to fire off center and/or backwards. People rectify this by using Cheat Engine to force ADS to toggle first person view ala Metal Gear Solid V.
No doubt Epic has known about this for years. They could’ve easily thrown in official support in the re-release & blown console gamers minds that such a thing was even possible (after all — they’re buying the damn thing again).
so, where is the 3rd person view mods for borderlands 2 HC enhanced edition ?? 🙁
