SuperData Arcade has shared its monthly report, stating that Apex Legends has the best launch month of any free-to-play game in history and that Anthem made over $100 million in digital revenue at launch.
Going into more details, Apex Legends generated an estimated $92 million from in-game spending across all platforms, with the majority coming from console. Despite this, though, Fortnite still came in above Apex Legends in the top grossing rankings. On the other hand, Anthem was the top-selling title by units on console in February, with an above-average digital download rate. In-game spending came in at $3.5 million across both platforms.
Moreover, Hearthstone revenue had its largest year-over-year decline ever this month, dropping 52% across PC and mobile, partly due to heightened competition within the genre and likely franchise fatigue.
Last but not least, NBA 2K19 was a game that was criticized for its micro-transactions, however it appears that this basketball game has been more successful than its predecessor. According to SuperData Arcade, NBA2K19 in-game spending is up an estimated 42% compared to NBA2K18, showing some of the highest growth seen from any mature AAA franchise in recent years.
Here are also the world’s most popular digital games across PC, console and mobile for February 2019.

“Anthem made over $100 million at launch”
🙁 🙁 🙁
THIS INDUSTRY IS CURSED
Told you repeatedly that the game was going to do well, but you for some reason were assured that you were right in that it would fail. For pretty much no real reason that I could gathered beyond that it didn’t appeal to you alone.

but its a flop everyone hated it.
That’s not what a flop means and you should stop using it if you dont understand shat it means.
Did the game fail in reviews? Yup. Did people still purchase it and made it a financial success despite that? Apparently a big yup!
It means completely and total failure. Games that make millions of dollars are by no definition a complete and total failure no matter how badly you want them to be or the game to fail.
After high profile failures like No Man Sky, 76 and now Anthem, consumers are waking up and the hype machine is losing its steam. Maybe the game companies will finally make good game instead of spending the biggest marketing bugdet to get sales.
There is still hope.
There’s no news like bad news.
But I was told on this website that nobody wanted to buy Anthem and that it would be a failure .
What happened? Who could have possibly told all these people that Anthem appealed to average people and that it would be successful regardless of how they felt?!!
WHO COULD HAVE SAID SUCH A THING?!
wow…..WOT PC still in the top ten for years, AW and WT are still not in the top ten for years….. ^^
Started it couple months ago. Great game if you can get past the idea about unrealistically strong Russian tanks and underpowered German ones

It made 100 million
Doesn’t mean 100 million sales
Making 100 million is extremely easy for a AAA game
No clue why anyone is surprised
If one million people buy your game, you have 60 million dollars
Happens to almost every single AAA game
It’s not even that good because the $100m figure is for all “digital revenue”, i.e. it’s not $100m worth of units sold digitally because the figure also includes revenue from sales of micro-transactions.
Also, once the game’s development costs over several years, its huge marketing budget and business taxes are deducted then what’s left over, i.e. profits, will be a fraction of that figure. There’s a reason EA’s share price has flatlined these past few years…
Exactly. 100 million is average for a AAA game. There is no reason for anyone to be shocked or for this to even be news.
…
What are you on about?
Here’s why I think all these mediocre/bad and poorly desigened games make so much money…we have this whole new generation of kids that spend money without thinking on s#!t like this! Buying and playing games has become super convenient, with a few click you are up and running! There are millions of these young players who are the sole reason for the high sales of bad games!
Us kids of the 80’s and 90’s have a very different way of looking at things than this new generation…what we think would fail miserably ends up making millions, sometimes billions!
Us kids of the 80’s and 90’s was wasting even more money in arcades! I must admit, I spent juicy 5 $ on origin access to get 1000 apex coins, but beside that I cant understand what those kids are buying! There is absolutely 0 things worth buying in game! In TF2 you can idle on user servers and you can brag with your precious gear, but here nobody will ever see what you have, and everything equally suck!
Arcades!!! Good lord used to rule the arcade with Virtual On, Virtua Fighter, Street Fighter, and MK! Used to live for hours on a quarter. Good times! Although I’m pretty sure I could own my house outright if it wasn’t for Arcades.
The average schmuck will buy anything with an EA logo on it because it’s popular, mediocrity is popular, mediocre and average people are the majority, that’s how things go, the hobby got too popular, simple as that.
wow look at you go hipster!
I can enjoy mediocre things from time to time, and there are good products/services that are popular, doesn’t mean I exclusively have to resort to them.

Reg: “the hobby got too popular, simple as that.” (hipster)
The industry has become bigger than Hollywood and as a consequence it produces content like Hollywood, quickly, cheaply and with little effort.
When mobile games are the most popular games out there when they’re nothing but glorified casinos, yes, I can say with all of my confidence and without fear of being called a hipster that the hobby has gotten too big.
Now give me an actual argument sh*t eater.
1.Easy: don’t play mobile games.
2. If this industry had not become as big as it is we would have had another Game Industry collapse like in the 80’s.
3. Options, Options, Options. You can play what you want from games like Inside/Cuphead/Killer Queen, to single player games like GOW/Spiderman/Detriot, to MP games Like COD, and yes even an Apex Legends, etc. This is by far the best time to be a gamer, any gen from Sears Pong to what ever the heck Stadia will be.
Now please… GSABOD.
That’s a lot of trash you just listed, are you a journalist?
Only 100m lol and how much it cost to make? Don’t think it even made its money back
Gonna disagree with ya there, GTAV is one of the most complex games ever built and that one fetched $250 million price tag.
And GTAIV was 100million. MEA was 40 to 50million, it sold 3 million and was considered a flop by EA. I bet Anthem cost way more to make than MEA. I could be wrong ofc
Live service games are for children to have a digital arcade experience. Adults get a back catalog of PC and last gen emulators up-res’d to 4K.
Not bad if you ask me.
Over 100 million. So let’s say 120? And the game costs 60 bucks at least. Let’s give them the benefit of the doubt and say everyone bought the 60 dollar edition. So 2 million digital sales.
We also have to consider when Anthem released, physical copies weren’t that good. I believe it was 10 percent of Destiny 2’s launch? Ofcourse Destiny was already popular and that was a sequel and this is UK. US seems to do better as Anthem is the second best selling Bioware title ever (2).
I just wonder. EA said it was hoping for 8 million, then 6 million in around 30 days (3). And we also have to consider that it was free with EA Access so no sales there. With EA not coming out to say anything and no actual sales figure, I wonder if Anthem is not selling so well but in the US was the strongest? I am just guessing at this point but if EA could boast about sales, then it would. This just sounds to be impressive for the shareholders.
