RTCW Venom Mod for Return To Castle Wolfenstein features HD textures and new shaders, improves AI

Remember Gray Matter’s Return To Castle Wolfenstein that came out in 2001? Modder ‘_HellBaron_’ has released a new version of his graphics overhaul mod, RTCW Venom Mod, that aims to improve the game’s visuals and AI.

The Venom Mod is described as a general improvement of original Rtcw game, with a new challenging and aggressive AI and some features of the id tech 3 engine, while also keeping the original gameplay intact.

The mod comes with updated textures for levels, weapons and enemies, HD textures combined with new shaders, restores assets and effects that were not used, and HD menu, console, fonts, flames, blood and crosshairs.

Its latest version, v5.5, features new textures for both the single-player and multi-player modes, fixes some texture issues on weapons, windows and walls, adds an optional Thompson gun model and brings many improvements and optimizations.

Those interested can download the mod from here.

Below you can find a video from an older version of this mod that will give you an idea of what you can expect.

  1. One of the great classic games imo. The game is just plain fun all the way through. It’s been a couple of years since I checked but I think there are still sites dedicated to mods for this game. I might grab this mod and make another playthrough.

  2. One of the many reasons why the PC platform is the best right here. You don’t see people able to improve 17 year old games on console without issuing a remaster and charging $40 for it.

    1. And that’s probably exactly what Activision would do. I think they still own the rights to RTCW. COD: MW Remastered is still priced at $40. An 11 year old game. No discount for people who have already bought the game back in the day either. That’s one thing you can count on with Activision is maintaining high pricing.

  3. Nice, within 30 seconds of the video you can already see the improved AI in action, enemies move backwards while shooting, looking for cover. Instead of the awesome complex AIs of 2018, where enemies run straight at you, thinking their automatic weapons work like swords.
