Kingdom Come: Deliverance tweaks improve texture streaming, enable Volumetric Fog

Nexusmods’ users ‘Artins90’ and ‘Moosan82’ have shared some interesting tweaks for Kingdom Come: Deliverance. These tweaks will improve texture streaming, may reduce stuttering, may improve performance on HDD disks and will enable Volumetric Fog.

Let’s start with the Texture Streaming tweaks. As Artins90 noted, the tweaks below try to force the game to preserve the textures for longer instead of discarding them almost immediately, they also increase the LOD levels so that your PC has enough time to load new textures before you reach them.

The tweaks also make sure that all the textures are already loaded when you enter a level, for this reason the initial loading times will be longer. They also use slightly more memory and might cause a small performance loss on weaker systems but on systems where the HDD is the bottleneck, these tweaks might prevent freezing and stuttering.

Here are the tweaks:

STEP 1 for the Steam version:

Go to the game main folder where you can find system.cfg
Place the user.cfg file you downloaded from this page in the same folder where system.cfg is.
In the Steam launch options add +exec user.cfg
Go to STEP 2

STEP 1 For the GoG version:
Go to the game main folder where you can find system.cfg
Place the user.cfg file you downloaded from this page in the same folder where system.cfg is.
Create a shortcut of the game executable KingdomCome.exe (you can use the one on the desktop if you have it)
Right click on the shortcut, open properties, in the target field leave a space after .exe” and add +exec user.cfg
Like so: “D:\Games\Kingdom Come Deliverance\Bin\Win64\KingdomCome.exe” +exec user.cfg
After completing STEP 2, launch the game from the shortcut you modified.

STEP 2
Some values inside user.cfg need to be edited.
Open user.cfg with a text editor and set the values listed below to your liking:

— Set based on your Vram, example provided for 4GB
r_TexturesStreamPoolSize = 4096
sys_budget_videomem = 4096

— Set based on your HDD speed, example 180 MB/s
r_TexturesStreamingMaxRequestedMB = 180

— Set the time limit you want inactive textures to stay in memory, value in seconds
r_TexturesStreamingResidencyTime = 120

— Set the amount of system RAM available to the game, example 7GB
sys_budget_sysmem = 7000

Regarding Volumetric Fog, Warhorse had implemented a version of it but decided to disable it in the final version. PC gamers can re-enable it, however we believe the game looks worse with it (as this effect has not been properly configured). Still, we believe this may be something that will interest a number of players.

In order to enable Volumetric Fog, you’ll have to open your user.cfg file and then add the line “e_VolumetricFog=1” to it.

    1. I hadn’t looked hard enough to see which commands this game would benefit from. Do these make a difference? My perf has actually been good on this game, except the texture pop-in.

      1. I don’t have this game with me yet, but don’t expect much perf boost if you have the game installed on your SSD.

        Btw, how much is the system PAGEFILE size set on your primary boot drive/OS ?

        Though, I suggest trying the “r_TexturesStreamingResidencyTime” tweak, and see if this makes any difference ? This might help in some of the game levels, imo.

        But, if the game is already running good on your RIG, then leave the settings as it is. Better wait for an optimization patch, if the DEVs have planned to release one.

        1. I have installed on a mech drive, I was planning on cleaning up mySSD to install there. I have page set to auto, which I think windows goes up to 1.5x the RAM if I am not mistaken. I have 32GB DDR3, 3770k @4.3 and a 1080 – 2000 Mhz GPU, 5500Mhz VRAM.

  1. You can pop-open the command console at any time in-game and modify the CVARs at your leisure. Gotta love these developers for not locking the console.

    This feels like Crysis 1 all over again. Only thing needed is the sandbox editor.

    1. I’ve used the following three variables using a console and have not downloaded the .cfg file from nexus because of a lot of conflicting reports and some people saying that it broke their game.

      r_TexturesStreamPoolSize = 4096
      sys_budget_videomem = 4096
      sys_budget_sysmem = 12000

      Haven’t really noticed any difference. By the way do you need to type these console commands everytime you boot up a savegame? Or do they get written to your system.cfg?

      1. You need to type them every time. And likely some commands require to be changed at startup thus necessitating the need for a cfg file.

        1. It’s just there are a lot of differing views on whether commands in that user.cfg actually make a difference.

          1. You can add a user.cfg to the main game folder and it will automatically execute its contents when you start the game.

  2. OFF Topic:

    Just a heads-up. You guys might be already aware of this, but it seems STEAM is having a huge “Lunar New Year” Sale, and most of the AAA titles have good discounts as well.

    Is that related to the Chinese calendar, new year ?

    Including Assassin’s Creed Origins – $40.19 (33% off), Prey – $19.99 (50% off), Skyrim Special Edition – $19.99 (50% off), The Witcher III: Wild Hunt – $19.99 (50% off), Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus – $29.99 (50% off), Watch Dogs 2 – $20.39 (66% off), and many many more.

    Link below. Grab thy copy till the sale lasts, till Feb 19.

    1. ACO- N*gger garbage
      Skryim-casual trash
      Cuckerstien II-moar N*gger garbage
      Watch dogs II-Hipster garbage

      these sales are weak as f**k, you can easily get cheaper games on gray markets (cdkeys,instant gaming,g2a etc etc…)
      and no. lets not turn DSO into an advertising site like PCgamer
      sales and what not are common knowledge

      1. What’s your problem, dude ? Granted if everything is garbage these days, then what choice we actually have ?

        That was just Off-topic news, and not any sort of Advertisement, for CHRIST’s sake !

        What makes you think that ? I don’t work for STEAM/Valve, or any other game developer/publisher for that matter.

        I just saw the sale, so I thought it might be helpful to others, but guess not.

        Your reply was totally uncalled for. I’m actually confused. And btw, those aren’t the ONLY games listed on SALE.

        Even other good, and lesser known PC titles are having discount, if the above game list I mentioned, is just pure Trash/garbage.

        Just because you dislike these games, doesn’t make them garbage.

        Please be mature, and grow up…Yeah, you can go ahead and buy those games from the Grey market, if you wish. We don’t have any objection.

        1. if you buy a Ubisoft/EA/ACTIVISION titles you are buying garbage and supporting an industry that puts microtransactions on a fully priced game AND virtue signals aggressively

          honestly most AAA games are like that nowadays, with cuckstomers having no backbone whatsoever it’s no suprise why quality has degraded to the point of “this is how it is”
          and what choice do we have? Indies. AA. games that are worth your time
          singleplayer games with good, wholesome gameplay
          not online only filled with cancerous F2P elements and autistic playerbase (I.E overwatch, PUBG)

          aside from Skyrim (which everybody owns nowadays)
          all the games you listed were utter crap that nobody should pay for, let alone play.

          1. FYI, I fully support INDIE and other AA game developers, even much more than the usual AAA gaming scene.

            But, Wolfenstein II is a good single player game though, imho.

            But, I do dislike the always-online DRM, and other micro-transactions that have being implemented with most of the new titles these days.

          2. “Wolfenstien II is a good single player game”
            what? why is it a good game?
            the level design is atrocious, corridors and corridors
            enemies who just stand in the open waiting to get shot
            half of the game is cutscenes (which you can’t skip)
            cutscenes filled with Antifa propaganda and feminist virtue signaling
            some of the most revolting $hit i’ve ever seen in a video game (that Anya scene was absolutely retar*** and disgusting)
            and the ending was just meh… felt like an after-thought

            at least the game was optimized and DRM-free (after all only an utter cuck would pay for this game)
            but to call it a good game is being dishonest or plainly lacking any sense of quality judgement

            if anything Wolfenstien the old blood was miles better than this (and the old blood was basically call of wolfenstien)

            if you want to endorse something, endorse the games that deserved to be bought, not those who sell out for cheap.

        1. legal? by who’s standards?
          they sell LEGIT keys who were bought in BULK from europoor countries
          they are legal, but immoral to the publishers (like someone gives a damn about those)
          games like Kingdom come deliverance, A hat in time,freedom planet
          i bought for full price

          games from AAA should be always gray markted, always.

    1. Yeah, I think GOG is also offering Chinese New Year Sale, Flash Deals !

      Oh btw, its a FLASH deal I suppose, and such deals can only last between one and eight hours I think, unlike STEAM’s sale, where all discounts are there for the entire period of the sale.

  3. I still have not received my KS copy 🙁 , guess it may be patched by the time I get it.

    The glass is half full.

  4. this is the best rpg since gothic 2, the world is amazing, i wish it had big upcoming addons like the witcher 3 had

  5. 300K sales on steamspy and rising
    this game is like the second coming of jesus
    a revitalization of the RPG genre, no more frozen questions and robotic NPC’s
    generic fetch quests and bland storyline

    if anything Kingdom come deliverance has “delivered” all that Warhorse promised and more
    and it’s one of the contestants of Game of the Year 2018 for me

  6. Also visit the Nexus for quality of life mods
    this include turning off HUD with the press of the button
    removing weight limit, richer merchants, remove arrow trailing and more
