Okami HD – PC version will support mouse+keyboard but will be locked at 30fps

Okami HD releases in a couple of days and Capcom’s Chief Operating Officer, Wbacon, has revealed some new information about the PC version. According to Wbacon, the PC version of Okami HD will support mouse and keyboard. And while these are amazing news for PC gamers, Wbacon stated that the PC version will be locked at 30fps.

As Wbacon noted, Capcom tried to unlock the framerate but encounter major performance issues. An unlocked framerate breaks the game logic, collision detection, and animation speed. Therefore, and since it would require a lot of effort and time in order to offer a proper 60fps mode, Capcom decided to simply lock the game at 30fps.

From a company like Capcom, we were expecting better things. Its excuse is also ridiculous when you think about Dragon’s Dogma; another game that was coded for Xbox 360 and PS3. Similarly to Okami HD, Dragon’s Dogma was originally created to operate at 30fps on both Xbox 360 and PS3. Game logic, physics, and animations were meant to be running at 30fps. However, Capcom put some effort in it and made it possible so PC gamers could enjoy it with higher framerates.

Bad move Capcom, really really bad move.

Okami HD will be priced at $19.99 and will come out on December 12th!

  1. Hopefully a player patch will hit that unlocks the frames. Honestly im not bummed at all. I get it. Its a $20 port of a ps2/wii game obviously capcom isnt going to risk putting much into the pc version when gamers on ps4 and xb1 buy everything day one with a 30fps standard.

    1. It’s good because I’m not risking putting my money into it as well. I’m not sure Capcom will benefit from that as much as I will though…

  2. This game is so good dont let the 30fps deter you from getting it…i wish it would have 60+fps but trust me as someone who played it in the ps2 days this game is amazing!

  3. Was Dragon’s Dogma logic and physics really tied to framerate? I was under the impression that the game was just locked at 30fps considering how optimized the engine is.

    1. I suspect that was the case for the console version. As no other MT Framework games had FPS caps other than Capcom’s fighting titles (which need a locked framerate to ensure all players are getting the same baseline experience).

      1. I think John is making a mountain out of a molehill here. Yeah, 60fps would be preferable, but back on the PS2 a bunch of games had their framerate tied to game logic, not all games, but a big part of them were. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens, modders will probably unlock the framerate and we’ll be able to see just how broken the game gets. And if they get the game working properly without the cap, then Capcom is definitely losing some brownie points they got for remembering Okami exists.

Also, this is f*cking Okami, I’m not gonna let the chance of supporting this game for a possible sequel slip by my fingers just because of the framerate.

this game for a possible sequel slip by my fingers just because of the
          framerate.”

Well damn! Is it that good? I’m pretty much uninformed on console exclusives. I think I will look into this game better and see.

          1. It’s a pretty old game, so it might have aged a bit in terms of gameplay mechanics, but it still is one of the best games Kamiya has ever directed, and its critical acclaim can attest to that, it’s one of Capcom’s highest rated games ever released.

If a sequel were to be made(a real sequel, not a DS spinoff/seque), one that improves everything that made the original good, then we could have something truly special in our hands.

    1. And it is going to have bugs like usual

It is not hard to unlock fps, but it is hard to unlock it without causing bugs

      1. If it can be done, it’ll probably be like Takes off Zesteria, where they had to hugely tweak the game code and it took them months after release before they got it done.

  4. That’s funny, I remember this being a PS2 game, which makes comparing it to a PS3 title a bit unfair.

I assume that they tried to unlock it when making the PS3 port and it didn’t work, so they made the best of the situation and used that surplus power to do supersampling instead (because the PS3 version downsamples from 4K), and now they’re porting from the PS3 version because it’s the most recent codebase they have.

Either way, it’s also not surprising that’s the cap isn’t easily removable given that the studio which developed the game no longer exists and most of the original devs no longer work at Capcom IIRC.

  5. Guess I’m not buying into it then.

I sport a 144hz monitor (technically 165hz), and you’re basically trying to sell me a console port that does far, far less than what my monitor can display at.

If this is how laid back Capcom is going to be towards this port, what’d to stop them from tossing out further 30fps port jobs?. We’re nearing 2018 and we still have a AAA company that has no power or skill to mould a game from 30fps to 60fps.

    1. This may be a bit unfair because I don’t know how much work it takes to redo a game that was built around 30 FPS but I suspect Capcom is just being lazy because they can get away with it on this PC port. I have no interest in the game right now until seeing some reviews and feedback from players but I have seen quite a bit of interest from PC gamers for this game so I imagine it will sell pretty well. As such, it deserves a proper PC port.

Will PC gamers buy it anyway? Yes. So incentive for Capcom to change it = 0

      1. > I don’t know how much work it takes to redo a game that was built around 30 FPS

I guess they should have thought of that before the built the whole game around 30 fps, huh? If the PC port is an afterthought then nobody should buy it, simple as that.

        1. It’s a PS2-era game that was HD ported to the PS3, from which our version is being made. I doubt if anyone during development,at any point, ever said “what about a PC version?”

          1. Yes. My point was, if that’s the case with your game and you’re not willing to rewrite some aspects of it from scratch to make them acceptable as a PC game then don’t bother porting to PC.

      2. Big publishers get away with all kinds of stuff these days. The majority of Japanese console to PC port jobs have involved some form of laziness, and they are greatly rewarded from thirsty fans who are more than willing to turn the other cheek, thinking that if they don’t, they fear they might not get any future port jobs (which is a cowardly and spineless way of thinking).

      1. Well, no, not for me at least. Most games locked at 60fps tend to stutter and even go below 60fps, thus making the lock useless and detrimental.

    2. It just seems pointless for anyone to argue that no one should ever buy new tech, but excuse old tech from people who refuse to adhere to the new advancements made in technology.

Devs can continue sticking with 30fps, but it just means I won’t support them, and over time that crowd of those that support them will shrink, forcing them to adapt to the times or suffer for it.

  6. GJ just lost my purchase, il consider it again after min60fps preferably unlocked framerate( or some mods that make this happen) till then not interested.

  7. Their explanation seems sensible. Some games are designed poorly to just work for their intended original platform and that’s where you get lots of things tied to frame rate. I fully expect that they don’t see the game being a huge seller so they do a quick barebones port instead of taking the time and money to fix the issues with the engine.

  8. Every single time when devs say that its impossible to unlock
framerate over 30fps because of physics, few days later some one random
guy on internet manages to do it….EVERY GODDAMN TIME!

    Explain this to me.

      1. Alright not every single game. Most of japanese ports thou. This will be no different.

Dark Souls devs “Sorry can’t do anything about fps lock nor resolution”
Evil Within devs “Sorry can’t do anything about fps lock nor black bars”
Deadly Premonition devs “Sorry can’t do anything about fps lock nor…well everything”

Fans always managed to do it shortly after release.
Sure it causes some issues but they are NEVER worse then playing game in 30fps. Devs could at least give us an option.

  9. There is 60fps hack on PCSX2 emulator that makes it runs 60fps

But thi hack breaks the wall jump, the 2nd jump doesn’t get
nearly enough height. Also running speed and the brush are too fast

So, yep the 60fps can break some stuff in this game. It has been been made to run at 30fps

  10. You can’t necessarily compare it to Dragon’s Donna, because all games are coded differently. Just because they were both for PS3 doesn’t mean that the code under the hood works the same way.

That said, it doesn’t mean I’ll be buying this port (unless a modder pulls off a miracle). I have the PS3 version, and it was really hard to play with 30 fps and the huge amount of motion blur. Maybe disabling motion blur on PC would help, but I’m not gonna play a game that I’m only mildly interested in if 60 fps is off the table.

  11. ‘Its excuse is also ridiculous when you think about Dragon’s Dogma; another game that was coded for Xbox 360 and PS3.’

Okami was coded for the PS2, not the PS3. It wasn’t an MT Framework game (which includes high framerate support part and parcel).

I thought it was quite clear it would be locked at 30 as nowhere in the marketing materials (and there has been a lot of snippet trailers) did they make mention of a 60fps mode, even for the console release (whereas they did for the Resident Evil remasters).

  12. I’m pure pc gamer but i don’t think what capcom has done here is outright bad. Comparing the game with the likes of dragon dogma is not fair either. This site does not need to show the PCMR attitude.

  13. Too much work to sort it out more like. Won’t spend the time and money.

So ok, you say it is locked to 30FPS then I absolutely expect the effort focusing on making the frame pacing and hardware optimization PERFECT. Anything less on launch and you should get melted by the PC community.

  14. > PC version will support mouse+keyboard but will be locked at 30fps

PC version will support showing pixels on a monitor in 32 bit color. PC version will support accessing the main menu. PC version will support loading saved games. PC version will support a person interacting with it. Stop pretending these are features.
