Yesterday, we shared a project from a fan who is currently working on a prototype version of Half Life 2: Episode 3 in Unreal Engine 4. Well, Half-Life fans, here is something more interesting. Lever Softworks has released a total conversion mod for Half Life 2 that brings the content from the cancelled Episode 3 to it.
This mod requires Half-Life 2: Episode One and Half-Life 2: Episode Two to be installed and working. Moreover, the mod requires Source SDK Base 2013 Singleplayer, with the beta branch set to “upcoming”.
As the title suggests, this mod features maps from the cancelled Half Life 2: Episode 3. Level Softworks got access to all the prototype levels that Valve created for Half Life 2: Episode 3, and decided to recreate/polish them.
This total conversion mod contains 11 levels created by Valve between 2012 and 2013 that were intended for Half-Life 3 (or Half Life 2: Episode 3 if you prefer). It also features 4 demonstration levels created by Lever Softworks to show various functions and NPCs not seen in those levels.
Those interested can download the mod from here. And we strongly suggest doing so as it will, finally, let you experience Half Life 2: Episode 3. Yes, this is not perhaps what Half Life 2 fans were expecting, but at least they can get an idea of what Episode 3 was going to be.
Have fun!

Maaan, this is like salt in the wound ?
i have buried this franchise i dont care about it anymore.
Valve buried it, but it’s cathartic to piss on it’s grave, and Valve’s heads.
Fact is that episode 3 might be dead, surely it’s dead as laidlaw thought it, but could still be alive with a different story, whatever, the thing that stays more alive is HL3, which valve could still be developing or could start some day, starting just like HL1 and 2 started, with gordon on a train heading somewhere.
Nothing New, we all ready know that Half-Life: Episode 3 is not a thing since Gabe officially said he end the episodic format with Episode Two.
The real question now: if there is going to be a Half-Life Game what is the new formula, a VR only, Moba or RTS, cause Valve didn’t want to do a Classic Single Player game like all of the fan want!!!!!!! And to be honest if it’s going to be other thing than what we know a pure normal Single Player then they can shove it where i think…
HL3 is unlikely to happen because Valve painted themselves into a corner. Awards are still heaped upon HL2 to this day as though it were Game of the Century. A follow-up to HL2 would not be able to meet expectation because it wouldn’t compare to the hyperbole and rose-tinted memories that people have in their heads.
I never understood this kind of thinking tbh. I mean they have an award winning franchise for christ sake. Even if it turned out to be crap it woudn’t sell less than 5 million copies. The only explanation is that they are lazy and still makes tons of money thanks to steam monopoly and microtransation crap that people buy. They are fat and lazy, but i don’t think they are THAT coward to not release a game in fear of gamers with high standards (believe me, they are not).
Alive? lmao, it isn’t even in the conception stage…
Could be, we’ll get to know, some day
The majority of fans are angry at Valve. No matter they would bring out .. no matter how good it would be, the expectations are through the roof and people would give it negative reviews, pitchforks included, followed by a ton of memes going “it took them that many years, and all they made was this”.
From a business perspective it is not viable for Valve to tackle this project. There is little to no gain. They survived the “HL3 confirmed” storm and doing well currently. There is no reason for them to risk their current standing over “yet another campaign shooter”.
Staph it, turning da knife in da wound isn’t gonna do any guddd 🙁
F** you Valve!
I don’t want spoilers, so I won’t play these beta levels. I’ll just wait for the final version to be released.
at this point it may just never come out
Not going to happen. Valve never releases things that got leaked. Remember parts of HL2 got leaked as well, and none of them ended up in the game.
I think that was a joke.
just scraps… which shows valve didn’t go far in development
bastards…
Half Life 2 was overrated and inferior to the first Half Life. It also popularized the “cinematic” 5-hour FPS campaign.
Me 2, i really like Half-Life the 1st more than the 2nd. And just to say Episode Two is way better than HL2 & HL2:EP1.
I get what you’re saying but not about the game time. Most gamers spent around 15 hours playing this game and even the speed-runners took 9 hours according to this site…………..
howlongtobeat
I finished it in 9 hours. Wow! Such great value for what used to be a full price game! That’s almost the length of Infinite Warfare’s campaign. You can even make it last longer if you stop to gawk at the bloom effects and crude physics puzzles that only a PHD in physics can solve.
Pedantry about the run time aside, my point still stands. Half Life 2 is every bit as on-rails as a Call of Duty campaign and has even less replay value.
