SuperData has released its worldwide digital video games stats for June 2017. According to the stats, the PC segment dropped 16% compared to last year’s June. As SuperData pointed out, this is mainly due to Overwatch’s incredible success back in 2016; a game that really boosted overall PC sales in 2016.
On the other hand, the Free-to-play MMO and pay-to-play MMO segments appear grew 5% and 6%, respectively. So yeah, while we all hate these categories, it appears that there is a huge market for them out there.
Furthermore, DOTA 2 continues to climb the Free-to-play MMO top 10 due to the crowd-funding activity toward the prize pool for their largest yearly tournament, “The International”.
It’s also worth noting that Tekken 7 made the top 10 console and PC lists at launch, selling well over 200,000 digital units across console and PC worldwide during its launch month.
Last but not least, here are the top 10 grossing title for all platforms!

As long as people are having fun i guess
No surprise considering the circumstances, there really hasn’t been a massive, multi platform release yet this year.
I mean it’s a good and a bad thing. It means people are having fun with what they have OR there’s jackshyte worth coming out on pc.
I think it’s both :D)
Kinda hard to buy games during the HOT summer the HOTTEST summer in decades. especially if you have a ton of backlog…SUPER HOOTTT SUPPPERRRR HOOOT…sorry i dont know what got into me.
How is GTA5 still the top seller on console? A game that originally released 4 years ago and dropped for current gen consoles 3 years ago.
GTA Online?
No, it would still be selling relatively well even without that, as evidenced by how GTA IV was still selling quite well even years after release. GTA Online just exacerbated the situation, but even then only to a degree; most of the fanbase would exist regardless, they’d just be making far less money due to the absence of microtransactions in favour of actual f*cking story DLC.
Right, but the question was “How is still the top seller?”.
GTA Online.
I have no doubt it would be selling well, but as you’ve just said GTAO exacerbated it to the point of it being in the top spot.
It’s the top seller during July, a historically dead period for video game releases. If it was the top seller during October or November, I’d say there’s an argument there for GTA O being that popular, sure, but this can easily be attributed to just GTA being GTA, regardless of GTA O.
Hell, even GTA IV routinely ranked number one during Steam Sales, as I recall. Or at least top 3/5 whenever CSGO [insert other Steam game here], Skyrim, or some such other would take over the top spot/s.
And that one actually had mods, unlike on consoles.
But the market tendency nowadays is heavily driven by Online MP, that is the main factor that contributes to this thing selling like hotcakes constantly.
Last week Zelnick (Take2 CEO) said something among the lines of “GTAO transformed R*” (paraphrasing), so there is that.
GTA V numbers and charts are nuts. It is way more than “eh, GTA always sell”.
Profits, specifically, are heavily oriented towards MP, largely because of microtransactions. They can’t get away with milking the sh*t out of us with single-player games, so you see buzzword bullsh*t like “market tendencies” “shifting towards multiplayer”, when in fact it’s just publishers trying to maximise their profit margins, all while justifying it using analysts like these f*ckers right here which get paid to deliver exactly what the publishers ask them to deliver – nothing more, nothing less.
This is just the suits expanding on the near-decade-old belief that “solo single-player games don’t sell as well as SP + MP games”, even though that’s not really true. Tacked-on multiplayer has hardly ever generated additional revenue, aside from your once in a blue moon situation like GTA O & that’s overwhelmingly only because of the Shark Card microtransactions, rather than because of GTA O’s existence unto itself.
But yeah, GTA O (read: Shark Cards) did transform Rocksh*ts…… They no longer give a f*ck about quality single-player content, as will be evidenced by RDR2 anywhere near as much as they give a f*ck about pushing out Shark Cards 2.0, though of course they’ll be known as “Bonds” in order to fit in with the western theme (already leaked).
And to top it all off, once the game actually launches, we’ll once again get a load of hate rained down on mods because Take-Two thinks they’re “stealing” from their profit margins (or whatever-the-f*ck delusion they’ve created for themselves, really), all while they deliver absolutely zilch in the form of post-launch single-player content in favour of just milking the sh*t out of us with more microtransactions, because “F*CK YOU – but don’t forget to pay me anyway, b*tch.”
As for GTA V’s sales numbers; GTA IV was released in 2008, right when the market first started expanding exponentially. whereas GTA V was released right squat in the middle of an exponentially bigger market. As a result, there’s bound to be a sizeable difference between the two’s sales numbers, especially when you factor in how many more platforms GTA V is spread across, compared to GTA IV. Sure, even so, it’s been selling exceptionally (ridiculously, even) well, but yeah, GTA sells.
I’ll be honest with you, too many words. >.<
– Marketing propaganda.
– Yeah, Shark Cards definitely “transformed” Rocksh*ts.
– Shark Cards 2.0 leaked for Red Dead Redemption 2. Guarantee of no post-launch DLC as a result, as was/is the case with GTA V.
– Take-Two/Rockstar hates mods “because.” This will re-trigger once RDR2 launches.
– GTA V’s numbers are massive, but most of it is attributable to specific factors, rather than GTA O.
It’s GTA. It defies logic.
Unfortunately.
tbh, there wasnt anything worth buying this year so far on pc
In your opinion.
It tends to get good during Q3, but I totally agree compared to other years this year has been a joke.
The few games that matter turned into bad ports.
it’s always Q1 Q3. Summer is always dead af.
This year it’s not even Q3 in general, it’s just October 17th, specifically.
For what seems to be no reason what-so-ever, save for total dumb*fkcery.
ikr
Guess you haven’t payed attention to the game releases for the next two months.
Did I say Q3? I meant Q4
Only bought Ghost Recon Wildlands so far, refunded Vanquish.
prey
Wildlands was, if you can look past the horrible driving mechanics.
Could say the exact same thing for my PS4.
Last game I bought that was actually any good was Uncharted 4.
Same. I honestly feel like this year personally sucked for me when it comes to gaming. Mind you the past 3-4 years have more or less been the same, in terms of lackluster releases and safe ideas along with a sprinkle of copying business models to maximize profit over quality.
2017 is actually worse than 2014
really sad year for PC…
PUBG on top 10 already is nuuuuuuuuuts.
Im freaking broke XD
haha i clicked on the picture i don’t own any of the PC titles and i don’t care to. Not a online guy love single player games mainly, Have to say i own 5/10 titles on the console list however of course for PC.
Dont worry overwatch is dying already, plus nothing good came out on steam so never expect good sales if you dont release something decent lol
as a game or as an esport? I hear so many orgs dropped their squads and sh*t. Its dying as an esport.
Waiting for:
The Elder Scrolls 6
Cyberpunt 2077
Farcry 5
New DooM
Wolfenstein the new colossus
game release in June 2017?
Dirt 4(worse a lot respect Dirt Rally)……..Pro Cycling manager 2017………Hunting simulator…….Nex Machina…..
dusk you forgot dusk….also maybe outcast.
Couple of mistakes in the article. It was stated that f2p and p2p mmos grew and we all hate them, yet there appears to be a market for them. Those are the only two types of games there is. A game can be only free or not. free to play is a free game, pay to play is a game that cost money. I don’t agree that we hate free games and games that cost money as those are the only two types of games available. (maybe you meant pay to win?(p2w)
The other mistake is calling Dota 2 an mmo. Dota 2 is 5v5, hardly massively multiplayer by any stretch.
Really impressive .. just one game game boost a lot sales of PC.
F2P, P2P.. where’s P2W stats?
Rocksh*ts made over USD 1 billion in GTA V microtransactions……
“Undermonetising” he says………
What a sick f*cking joke.
its why we wont have gta 6 for a long time. as long as they can still milk everyone no need for another game.
this is what esports and skin buying does.
Yeah and now you see what “AAA” gaming does when it decides it wants more money.
esports will kill the pc gaming market imo.why buy a AAA title when you got overwatch, league and all the other esports.most multiplayer fps games like cod dont last long on pc.
it goes back to what i have said from the start pc is for esports and console is for AAA gaming.
Hahaha muh AAA games, modern AAA Games are nothing but quick cash grabs from the developers, only lasted for 8-12 hours, after that buy DLC 1, DLC 2, buy expansion, etc etc.
what do you think esports are?.they are the biggest money grab there is in gaming.spending $2 for a skin to $400 for a knife.
thats a money grab.
