Weta Digital showcases a mind-blowing real-time animated short in Unreal Engine

Epic Games and Weta Digital have released an incredible real-time animated short, created in Unreal Engine using the new Hair & Fur Rendering and Simulation tool. This tech video showcases what modern-day GPUs are capable of when pushed to their limits.

Weta Digital used an NVIDIA GeForce RTX3090 in order to render this animated short in real-time. Now keep in mind that this animated short only features two animals and a simple environment. So yeah, don’t expect this kind of visuals in next-gen games anytime soon. Still, it’s really impressive witnessing this kind of real-time graphics.

Epic Games plans to add this new Hair & Fur Rendering and Simulation tool in Unreal Engine 4.26.

Enjoy!

  1. “Now keep in mind that this animated short only features two animals and a simple environment.”

    Ergo,

With the upcoming 5090RTX, he should be able to render 4 animals and a more complex environment .

  2. Impressive detail, furr can really bring a gpu down on its knees and make it beg for mercy. Its a reason furmark have been used as stress test of gpu overclocks for ages and new techniques to handle that are most welcome

  3. It’s always the bad animations that give this away. Also notice the fantastic life-like lighting adjustments.

Wheras in a videogame, there’s always this edgy senior art designer who tries to replicate a movie using contrast 100, brightness 10.
