YouTube’s member ’18T220′ has shared a mind-blowing video from CRYENGINE, showing off some of the best real-time destruction and physics effects we’ve ever seen. This video proves that CRYENGINE is more powerful than most of us believed, though it remains to be seen whether developers will actually take advantage of such features. Enjoy!

While he is a die-hard PC gamer, his gaming roots can be found on consoles. John loved – and still does – the 16-bit consoles, and considers SNES to be one of the best consoles. Still, the PC platform won him over consoles. That was mainly due to 3DFX and its iconic dedicated 3D accelerator graphics card, Voodoo 2. I don’t think anyone has ever doubted CryEngine was powerful. The problem is whether it’s very efficient, or very flexible. Crytek’s tech demos – oh, I mean “games” – never made a very good case for the engine being anything but a system hog for making flashy but vapid titles. Lichdom is pretty wonderful, though, and seeing a small developers do so much with the engine is encouraging.
Show me a more open shooter than the first 3-4 levels of Crysis. STALKER! Now think of another one. And another one. You’ll quickly run out of titles and all the while Crysis has insane physics and more dynamic AI than STALKER. Crysis was the perfect showcase for a vast, complex game. The real problem is that no publisher wants to pay for such a game when linear cover shooters sell just as well and cost less.
Crysis was a really hollow experience, besides being a technology showcase. And it wasn’t that open at all. It was a “wide corridor” experience, far from the real openness of STALKER and Far Cry2/3. And I venture in adding Skyrim to the list, although not being a shooter, it shares it’s open world structure.
Well even if you omit Skyrim, the new Fallout games would go on that list. 3 was pretty crap in terms of shooting mechanics – VATS is mostly there to compensate for that – but NV is a huge improvement. I completely disabled VATS for it.
Xray engine had a crap load of problems and STALKER was extremely buggy unfortunately. At least with Crysis 1 you didn’t have boundaries to were you can go and there are different open routes to take.
I really did like Crysis 1 and Warhead, I liked how they let you approach things your own way. I guess the dumbing down of Crysis 2 has left such a bad taste in my mouth that I’ve forgotten how enjoyable the first games could be.
It’s the tools that count not the games made on it. Devs are saying a lot of positive things about CE3 and using it a lot more now days.
Star Citizen and Kingdom Come will change your opinion.
Crysis 4 paintball edition will certainly look really good… in 2015 or 16.
Maybe crytec guys should give some advises to respawn… how to make destructible walls on a game like titanfall, when there is only 0.001% of processing power left on the Xbox one, after rendering frames at an outstanding 780p resolution.
Oops, the word ‘crysis’ is in a comment. Normally, darkan45 should come in, write a 5000 word comment, and insult me:)
Where is darkan45? Is he fine?
Good question, i was wondering where darkan45 has been as well lol.
looks awesome.
just make imagine if cryengine supported some type of gpgpu like physx. actually, crystal dynamics has demonstrated that gpgpu on amd is possible with opencl, and it worked quite well.
gamers need their gpus to be fully used, gpgpu is a very powerful tool that is not being used. and the ones who should make the first step are these big companies with monstrous engines. crytek and dice, we are looking at you.
I just want this real kind of destruction and weather effects to actually make it to games for once. Especially online games. BF4 is getting there but come on! I want crazy destruction and weather in a FPS! I’ve wanted it for like 4 years now. Get after it developers!
