Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor versus Assassin’s Creed – Video Comparison

After the debate about whether Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Assassin’s Creed 2 share the same code and assets, YouTube’s member ‘JohnnyB2K’ has created an interesting video comparison between these two titles. As we can see, the climbing animation looks similar but not the same. The ‘moving along a ledge’ animation, on the other hand, is exactly the same with the one featured in the AC series. Ubisoft and Warner Bros have not commented on this story yet. Enjoy the video after the jump!

  1. Of course it’s similar! They’re going for an Assassins Creed/ Witcher 3/Darksiders 2/Batman Arkham vibe! They’re going to make the character move and react similar. In Darksiders 2 the wall climbing is very similar. And the rope walk is extremely similar to Batman. It’s clear that they’re very influenced by Assassin’s Creed and the Witcher, is imitation not the most sincere form of flattery? This game looks incredible and I’m counting down the days until release because I’m a fan of Assassin’s Creed as well! Monolith did a fantastic job too!!!

    1. Not really i play batman and darksiders 2 right now. The animations are the same as assasin creed, notice how the character jumps from above and its the same, notice how running on a rope has the same crouching position as assasin creed. Notice the similar minimap and enviroment structure. This is definetly the same cod as assasin creed, they dont try to do it similary, they most definetly use the same code.

      1. They’re not using the same code, they’re built on completely different engines and made by different companies. Its a platforming adventure game, its going to have similar animations. but there are differences in the animations. A human will move a certain way when doing an action. They are clearly trying to imitate Assassin’s Creed, but they’re not stealing anything. Know what you’re talking about instead of parroting another article.

        1. you cant possibly believe this trash.

” Its a platforming adventure game, its going to have similar animations.”

Similar and the same are not the same thing you know, the animations are totally like assasin creed and nothing like other similar games.

“A human will move a certain way when doing an action. ”

Yes like tomb raider, all the animations were motion captured, so was assasin creed but this game uses assasin creed assets and thus looks nothing like tomb raider.

Dont give me any more crap like this. There are a bazillion of cod clones outhere but none of them has cod’s animations, the closest thing i have seen is counter strike mods with those animations.

Obviously they are not “stealing” anything, they are using the same assets, either bought from ubisoft or the artisit is the same. Or you think the lead ac2 developer who thought they use ac2 code was wrong? Like he doesnt even know the animations he worked for 2 years on.

Ubisoft re uses assets all the time, most of their weapons are recycled through their various games.

The way the buildings are shaped and the ropes are exactl like assasin’s creed, even the slow mow jump and the assasination mission, this game is really cutting its development budget by using code from creed or they use it for alpha demonstration and its subject to change.

        2. You don’t need to read an article to see how similar the games are. Even if certain animations looks a bit different, it mostly looks the same. The running, climbing even the combat looks extremely similar.

  2. Middle earth game looks amazing. Assassins creed devs and fans just mad that someone else is doing what their know for better. AC is old news and being a yearly franchise killed it.

    1. Killed it? Now, am i wrong or the latest AC game was very successful? What’s with this generation of gamer and ” if i don’t like it then the game must suck” mentality. Million of other people who purchased the game would disagree, so get over yourself. It’s Ubisoft flagship franchise, they have hundred of developers across multiple studio working on it .. why wouldn’t you expect it to get done faster. If the content doesn’t suffer who care how long it take to pump out a new sequel, let the market decide.

      1. I didn’t hear anyone bitching about how Dying Light has the EXACT same parkour animations as Mirror’s Edge. The EXACT same.

    1. I don’t understand why you guys won’t admit that it looks the same. It’s not just the climbing. I’m definitely getting this but I’m not going to be ignorant to claim that it doesn’t look the same.

      1. i won’t admit it because its not the same. Its like how ever game now is imitating Arkham’s combat system. similar not the same.

        1. Any person who watches this can see that the game looks the same like AC. You are in denial if you think it looks different.

      2. Who cares xD,i just want it to be a great game, nothing more. Game has totally different feel from AC franchise,if they took inspiration from AC and/or Batman in terms of climbing/platforming and combat mechanics and in the same time they improved them, that is a + for me.

Dev that worked on AC2 and posted that bs yesterday, should be flattered that they were inspired by AC like any other normal person, but no,he accused them for theft(he revised his statement later,bc, you know he was wrong) like other juvenile gamers that were posting “AC rip off” and similar comments.

        1. I don’t give a crap if the game looks the same as AC. Like I’ve said, I’m probably gonna get the game. All I’m saying is that people denying the game looks the same are just being in denial.

  3. I think both these games use HumanIK, which is the third-party middleware for character animation. In that case it would explain the similarity.

  4. (As long as you’re not playing as an Orc slaughtering members of the Fellowship, it can’t be like AC.)

With regard to the controversy, the climbing and ledge animations are nearly identical, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that anyone’s infringing on anyone’s rights. (If they are, then they need to pay.)

If you want realistic movement, what’s it supposed to look like? Mario in Donkey Kong?
