Tomb Raider 2 RTX Remix Path Tracing-1

Here’s another look at the Tomb Raider 2 RTX Remix Path Tracing Mod

A couple of months ago, we shared some screenshots from a WIP RTX Remix Mod for Tomb Raider 2. And yesterday, modder ‘skurtyyskirts’ shared a new video, showcasing the latest version of it.

Before continuing, this mod is not yet available for download. Not only that but it’s not complete yet. Thus, it does not represent the quality of its final version. With this out of the way, let’s take a closer look at it.

skurtyyskirts used PBRify in order to add some PBR materials to the game’s textures. And, as you will see in some comparison screenshots, the RTX Remix Mod looks way better than its vanilla version. However, some areas appear too dark with RTX Remix. So, to make the game look better, the modder will have to implement some new lights.

This video also highlights some of the challenges modders will have to overcome. These old games were developed with a completely different mindset. Simply adding Path Tracing to them will not get the job done. This is why we’ve only seen, so far, very basic RTX Remix Mods.

Anyway, from what I know, there is no ETA on when the first version of this RTX Remix Mod will become available. As always, though, we’ll be sure to keep you posted.

In January 2023, we shared several RTX Remix Mods that are in the works. As such, you can take a look at screenshots and videos for Tomb Raider,  Grand Theft Auto: Vice CityManhunt, and Garfield Kart RTX Remix. Last month, we also shared videos for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas RTX Remix, Need for Speed: Most WantedUnrealTony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 and Midnight Club 2.

Speaking of Path Tracing Mods for older titles, you might also want to check out the following ones. Modders have released early demos for their Path Tracing Mods for Tomb RaiderMax Payne and Call of Duty 4. Do note that the COD4 Mod is a “proof of concept” demo, and it does not look that great. On the other hand, the RTX Remix Mod for Max Payne looks amazing (at least in my opinion). Let’s also not forget the RTX Remix for COD: WoW. And then there is this amazing RTX Remix Mod for Need for Speed: Underground 2. Oh, and don’t forget to give a go at this RTX Remix for Unreal Tournament 2004. Finally, you can download Path Tracing Mods for Doom 2QuakeHalf-Life and Serious Sam.

Enjoy and stay tuned for more!

Tomb Raider 2 RTX - Opera House

  1. This looks horrible. Where the hell is the light even coming from?! The sky is pitch black!
This is a perfect example of “better tools doesn’t make you a better artist”.

    1. There is a sun light source at the top as it’s daytime (even without the mod you can see this). As for how the sky looks like, blame the devs. They hadn’t included any skybox or sun sprite/object.

      1. That’s because the Opera House level takes place at night. I just played through the game in the Remastered collection and both the original and Remastered graphics have it at night with a black sky.

I’m all for these tools in the right hands to remix these games into something new and exciting, but this drastically changes the feeling of the level and the colors are completely blown out. It’s weird. It is a work in progress, so you can’t ever judge it too harshly… but this might have been a “don’t show it just yet, because it looks awful” type of scenario.

  2. Congrats on the technical side FWIW, but it looks bad.
I understand some areas being too dark because of lack of lights originally and RT slapped on top, but
    1) the bright tones are crushed/burnt so it looks overexposed to underexposed with little in between
    2) it has an unnecessary ugly slight bloom/blur
    3) the color overall is an ugly p1ss yellow
…and all that can be fixed in seconds with checkboxes and sliders, so it’s poor artistic sense from the modder.

  3. Somebody essentially lend a hand to make significantly posts I might state That is the very first time I frequented your web page and up to now I surprised with the research you made to create this particular put up amazing Excellent job
