YouTube’s ‘Artur Giardi’ has shared a video, showcasing what a 2D-HD Remake of Final Fantasy 6 could look like. This concept video looks retro-cool, and we highly recommend watching it, especially if you are fans of the classic FF games.
But what is a 2D-HD Remake? Basically, HD-2D is what Square Enix used to describe the art style of Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy. In short, the developers use 2D sprites in a 3D world, and retain the art style of the original game. Basically, think of it as a pseudo-3D version of SNES games.
Do note that this is just a concept video and nothing more. Giardi is not developing a fan remake. Moreover, and from what we know so far, Square Enix is not working on such a 2D-HD Remake.
Anyway, this is something really cool so I had to share it with you. I’d also love to see some other 2D-HD Remake concept videos for other classic SNES JRPGs. Perhaps a Chrono Trigger Remake? Or an Earthbound Remake?
Enjoy!

Still, the PC platform won him over consoles. That was mainly due to 3DFX and its iconic dedicated 3D accelerator graphics card, Voodoo 2. Am I the only one who dislike it when old 2D RPGs are remade in 3D?
I don’t know, I feel like it breaks the charm.
And we already got the pixel remaster, which looks better than that, don’t you think?
When such games are in 2D, I feel like it’s easier to use your imagination and transport yourself into the story, exactly because there’s not that much happening on the screen and your brain does the rest, creating the missing elements.
On the other hand, when you see very blocky 3D buildings like this, you can’t help but thinking unconsciously that’s all there is to it, you know? You can see clearly how the world is built, which messes with your imagination process.
I don’t even enjoy recent RPGs like Octopath Traveler for this exact reason.
(Crystal Project might be the only exception for me because of its fantastic addictive gameplay)
Hell, even in the mid-90s, games like Grandia already had that problem.
We definitely lost a lot in the 3D transition…
I know I know, it’s only a concept anyway. ?
