Half Life Alyx screenshots-9

Here is Half-Life: Alyx being played with mouse and keyboard, and without a VR headset

Half-Life: Alyx is the latest Half-Life VR game from Valve. The game came out three days ago and it took 2 days until PC gamers were able to run it without a VR headset. Yeap, you read that right; there is a way to play Half-Life: Alyx without a VR headset.

Valve News Network founder Tyler McVicker has shared the following video, in which he plays Half-Life: Alyx with mouse and keyboard. Basically, McVicker discovered some commands that allow PC gamers to play the game without a VR headset. Not only that, but thanks to the “vr_enable_fake_vr_test” command McVicker was able to shoot via the mouse.

It’s also worth noting that McVicker was also able to enable a standard Half-Life 2 HUD, as well as some Half Life 2 weapons.

What this ultimately means is that a non-VR mod for Half-Life: Alyx may appear pretty soon. And that’s because contrary to other VR games, Half-Life: Alyx already has a basic foundation for a non-VR version.

Below you can find the video in which McVicker  plays Half-Life: Alyx without a VR headset.

Enjoy and stay tuned for more!

        1. Not for gaming. Even if VR had more than 10 games worth playing, I have no interest in strapping a goofy headset to my skull and flailing my arms around.

        2. How exactly? There are only handful games supporting VR and majority of those are cheap indie games.
          Maybe in a 5 or 10 years.

          1. True. Just like you cannot afford a brain. The thing is… people will be able to play the game non vr, you on the other hand…

          2. “you on the other hand….” can play the superior version and the poor man’s version?

          3. You seem to do that in every comment perfectly, so why tf not. But i haven’t yet mastered to play the r3t@rded version just as good, though. Maybe you will show me your ways some day.

          4. Sure you dont Granny, and thats exactly the reason you left an idiotic replay to random gamer.
            Because you dont care.

The only reason the likes of you dont care is because you cant afford it.
            Is Pension too small, Granny?

          5. Just as small as your brain.
Money can buy you a VR, yet they can’t buy you a brain nor good grammar. Keep being yourself, man. Never change. <3

  1. this is a terrible idea. people will try it and instead just call the game terrible without full experiencing it the way it was meant to be played

      1. In other words, Doom without a mouse is sh*t, Crysis without a good GPU is sh*t, RFactor without a steering wheel is sh*t, Battlefield without a modem is sh*t, yes, it’s going to be sh*t without VR, but it’s a very impressive game with it, had a lot of fun

    1. Valve can add to Steam reviews of the game if the player has ever owned a VR headset. I bet Steam telemetry stores that information somewhere.

    2. That’s not how that works at all.. go do any art class ever and ask yourself the same of a painting. And work of art is a work of art in part because the artist who created choose the create it in the way they did and in the way they wanted the viewer to see it. If you strip away the elements that the artist wanted you to see and then call it trash then that’s f*king stupid. Appreciate it for what it is not what you make it after you ruin the art.

    3. On the contrary. If you take out something and the game becomes worse then naturally that which you have taken out was what was making it better…

      1. You can take something out and add something in, like Kb+mouse and not having to do stupid things like giggling the arms like a r-tard. Will it make the game better? Who knows, you probably will dismiss it out of hand because your ego is attached to the things you consume, that much is clear.

        1. Righto. Never played VR but knows all about it enough to tell everyone else they shouldnt own one. That the kind of ego you talk about?

          1. Try reading a dictionary every once in a while instead of using words you don’t understand.

      2. You can take something out and add something in, like Kb+mouse and not having to do stupid things like giggling the arms like a r**ard. Will it make the game better? Who knows, you probably will dismiss it out of hand because your ego is attached to the things you consume, that much is clear.

  2. doesn’t look like it plays as good without it though. the hand animations seemingly are tided to the motion control aspects of the game play.

    1. You can do similar things with a keyboard and mouse in…Tresspasser, remember that? a game from 12 years ago.

  3. I love Half-Life as much as the next person, but I’m not picking up a still-gimmick VR headset for “one” potentially good game. Just….. no.

    1. You remove the VR gimmick and you end up with a mediocre FPS, that also craps on HL2 for no reason.

        1. Doesn’t crap on it at all, even if you hate VR and HLA, the story in this game, the plot twist and what it means for the series is just fantastic, people are just so skeptical about VR that they’re bashing the game for everything, even where VR has nothing to do like world design and story

        1. The bar is not high for VR games..if this thing didn’t have a Half Life name attach to it nobody will care.

          1. Yet it’s HL, everybody cares for the better or the worse, and the game is good

      1. Sure, because the main reason to play this is to experience the VR. It’s the best out there for that bar none.

        1. The main reason to play it on VR is to replicate mundane crap like holding stuff without feeling any weight, or doing puzzles made for people with half of a functional brian, or shoot a gun…super innovative, specially for VR…cmon.

          1. it’s obvious that you’ve never played VR at all. pathetic losers like yourself always call it a gimmick. give me a break.

          2. What you just described sounds a lot like ‘video games’. Are you lost?

Edit: You’re going to feel like an idiot when you eventually buy one, whether in 5 or 10 years, because you realize its a pretty damn good medium.

      2. Aside from the VR thing which you obviously hate i get that, but there’s nothing to bash aside from VR, the story is brilliant i don’t know what you’re talking about

          1. Not always, the AI can be sh*t sometimes, fair enough, but when there’s space for it, i assure you they can do some impressive stuff, but overall the combats are easy, that’s a fact sadly

          2. I think a good AI is more about consistency than anything elses. FEAR AI is consistently good, Stalker as well, in games such as Half Life 2 or Doom 3, the ai can do some sensible things like going to cover and what not, but they behave bad for the most part.

          3. STALKER AI can be sh******t at times too unless modded, and their behavior can often go nuts, in SoC you have to mod the game so they can use grenades, not to mention the complete absence of some elementary AI design especially in SoC and CS, enemies can shoot you through bushes, can one shot you with a clunky weapon at 500m, and they’re obviously wall hacking, you can see you teammates tracking enemies movement even tho they’re behind a wall, no STALKER doesn’t have a really good AI, it’s cheated and often very buggy, it’s just that some fans take the absence of design as challenge and immersion, which is wrong, i love the series so much but it’s well know for it atrocious scripting
Nothing to say about FEAR tho, it has the best AI ever because it was the main focus of the game
            EDIT :
You can use MMOD for HL2 to get rid of the hitscanning and get vastly improved AI behaviour for the Combine soldier (cover usage, jumping through obstacle, clever grenade usage, faster movement…)
As for Doom 3, i don’t know any mod tweaking the gunners, in all the mods i tried enemies are hitscanning motherf*ckers, but anyway fighting the soldiers in this game never been the best part of it

      1. vr can elevate even something mediocre into awesomeness due to its interactivity that no other input device can give you…so no its not just “funny things” its actually being there and interacting that gives you a feel that no 8k curved screen will ever give you

      2. If you never tried VR before; you should. Shooting is simply something else that you can not do in a normal FPS. Blindfire, duck and cover, all these things are not gameplay-mechanics, but you simply playing the game. It an amazing experience and even “gimmicky” gameplay is far above the majority of FPS.

      1. Yes, I don’t understand the need to bash something you can’t even experience. It is no different from saying a triple A game with stellar reviews is crap that you have never played. It’s a gimmick, some people said that when the first 3DFX card came out also and said doom and quake looked just fine with direct draw. Now we are getting real-time movie quality CG performance out of GPUs in games. VR isn’t perfect I think hand and body detection along with uniform wireless tech will be what will truly push the platform.

But the difference from some of the idiot pirates that can’t afford hardware or software in the forums is that some people truly do appreciate the latest tech advances, while others act like they do and take to the forums and vent their frustrations by trying to convince people why it is their preference not to experience the latest tech in a tripple A title and that sole reason is because it is a gimmick they can’t afford and I can’t wait to tell everyone I told you so when it fails.

Well it isn’t going to fail it is going to continue to evolve and and become mainstream, because the experience is too immersive to do otherwise. It can be said that the Nintendo VirtualBoy was gimmick and the Wii, but both of those are what influenced VR for what it is today what it becomes later will be that much more interesting.

        1. “3DFX card came out also and said doom and quake looked just fine with direct draw”
I was here HAHA, i even saw people complaining about some games ditching the keyboard aiming support because they were used to it and didn’t want to use mouses for aiming

      2. look i love vr but laughing at people that dont have the option to afford it for a financial(especially now with corona crippling the economy) or other reason is just another level of douchebagery

basically its you saying:”HAHAHA you are poor stop being poor”

        1. Its not this simple, they come to VR articles and whine that VR sucks and that will never buy it, its their fault.
Also you dont get it, most of these “I cant afford it” are just rando teenagers that dont work.
They should stop posting their filth on VR articles

          1. You’re both right, there are people that don’t like VR but expressing themselves like adults, other people would love to experience it but can’t, that’s what he’s talking about, i got respect for those people, on the other hand you’re right about those c*nts that are just frustrated and don’t have a functional brain

    2. I said that to this idiot @djschaum520 but he’s too dumb to understand. people don’t use VR much yet. and sure as hell I won’t spend a penny on a vr headset.

          1. it sold over 300,000 so far. beat saber sold over 2 million copies. that’s more than some AAA releases and plenty of indie game releases

    3. First, one of the reasons for Alyx being VR is to remove the “gimmick” stigma from VR, and show people that full-length high-fidelity VR games are a thing that can be done successfully. I invested in a Rift S a few years back when they dropped to $400 for a headset + touch controllers, and I’ve enjoyed it so much that now I regret not shelling out more for the Index.

Secondly, do you really think Valve is going to release a “potentially” good game, or are they going to do the same thing they’ve done with literally every other major PC release and produce a “definitely fantastic” game?

And lastly, there are actually quite a few really good VR games out now. Alyx is far from the first, and it definitely won’t be the last. This is a dumb argument no matter how many times I see it.

      1. It’s by far the best though. Really raises the bar for the others. I thought Boneworks was disappointing and that’s second best for single player imo.

    4. It is definitely much better than I expected. Works great on the Rift CV1. I still want a proper HL3, but this is a great re entry for Valve as a dev. I usually only use my Rift for sim racing but I’ve put down Doom Eternal and iRacing to play through this and I’m hooked. Story is over 15 hours long. Gameplay is great and the environment gives me the same feeling as going to a really awesome haunted house/ bizarre musuem.

    5. That’s understandable. I wouldn’t do the same either but the VR lineup continues to grow, so for someone like me it’s already justifiable. Not only do I get to play the first true hallmark title for VR that’ll pave the way for other big titles down the line, but there’s plenty of other games that are already available, all of which have been making decent use of the technology.

It’s still early days. Obviously once it’s accessible enough (and affordable) I suspect that people will express less hatred towards the platform. I’m sure just like 2D games, traditional flat screen games will continue to co-exist.

Valve still has two more titles they’re working on (my guess it’s the next Portal and L4D or something totally original) and chances are they’re going to be VR exclusive, especially after the overwhelmingly positive response HL:A received. So by then hopefully people will have less reasons to complain bout the lack of AAA VR games.

    6. why is it a gimmick? VR enhances the immersive experience, just like graphics and sound do. unless you think it fails to do that after using it, your claim is unfounded.

      1. anyone who calls it a gimmick clearly has 0 experience playing in VR. I was just as ignorant until I tried it myself.

  4. I wont buy a vr headset for one game even if i did try vr multiple time and loved it but the price of admission is still too high for mostly bit sized gameplay experiences, but renting the equipment for a few days just for this game would be nice

          1. and people like you are still poor and will always be poor. you cry because you can’t play a game that others can. move on with your pathetic life

          2. Nah just tired of poor trash like yourself hating on a game that you have no access to. you talk as if you are an expect on VR and have 0 experience playing it

          3. Ooof. Poor baby is tired. 🙁 C’mon, start crying. Wanna call you the VR waifu? A trash fä?, calling others trash. Lovely.

  5. Might order a Rift S today to give it a go, i guess people don’t realise you can get rid of stuff if you’re not happy with it and get much of your money back. I think it’s called selling, or something

    1. First you need to find it, on ebay its overpriced, i had extra, put it for 590$ and it was snatched in 40minutes, others sell it for near 700 usd

  6. What the hell?

Valve claimed that Alyx was developed from the ground up for VR and couldn’t be ported to a normal PC game.

    1. Yea because VR is a different platform. Just because some one made it playable with a mouse and keyboard doesn’t mean it’s the same experience at all. VR is very different and the experience is a very large part of what makes it fun.

    2. Well Im just guessing but maybe they meant it couldnt be playable normally like the other HL games without having a lot of bugs, glitches, etc. I dunno.

Looks like someone may get this modded and working well someday without VR. That video though, it was sort of jerky/stuttery in parts like the hands were twitching.

    3. They also said recently that they couldn’t wait to see the modding community port it onto flat screen displays and have it working with a mouse and keyboard.

The game is still a VR title, that hasn’t changed. So the experience will obviously be toned down to support the limitations of the m&k.

  7. Nice. Hopefully a proper mod comes out soon so people can play it without being blackmailed into buying hardware that they dont want

    1. Wtf are you talking about. They are creating content for VR and you fools call it black mailing? Something is very wrong with you lunatics.

    1. Dont want to sound condescending, but it wont play better, it was designed to be played with a headset, just imagine playing RFactor with a keyboard instead of a wheel or FS without a joystick, you’re just limiting yourself and the game, but i’m still glad that people who want to know about the story or just experience the game can do it now

      1. A lot of FPS games designed to be played with a controller actually runs better on a KB+Mouse settings, shocking i know.

          1. “It’s the fact that the game wasn’t built around keyboard and mouse”

The standard excuse of console plebs applied thru VR.

“They’ll have to replace enemies and change scripts”

            Why?

“or add in a completely new puzzle systems”
            I
rather they make the filler automatic.

            “or dialogue”

            Again, why?

          2. “Because in order for the game to play any better in standard input, they’ll have to add enemies or replace existing ones because of how the game is designed around VR. ”

I agree with this, but i don’t think the change would be huge, and who knows, it could turn out better or just different. Game ports used to be different, i don’t see the issue in being that way again.

“Then you’ll be missing half the game, therefore the game won’t play better with keyboard and mouse. Do you not understand what i’m saying?”

There are a lot of interactions and hacking minigames in this game i would rather see streamlined, i play FPS games to shoot at enemies and not to exclusively fck around with physics (and you still can do that in a conventional FPS).

“Because again, if they have to remove puzzles or certain set pieces in order for the game to work with keyboard and mouse then they’re removing dialogue that is built around how the game is designed. It’s very simple to understand but I guess you can’t do that.”

It would be easier to understand if you gave me examples, but you seem focused in setting roadblocks instead of thinking outside the box.

        1. Arguing in my favor, yes this is true, just like there are other games actually running better on VR because they’re designed for it 🙂

          1. But there are lots of FPS games designed for controllers that runs better with Kb+mouse, just because the game was designed for a specific hardware, that doesn’t mean it is the definitive way to play it. I’m not saying VR is inferior, but one day we will have the option to judge it.

          2. On this particular game (HLA) i’m absolutely sure since i finished it yesterday, that a classic KB/M option without any tweak or some redesigned puzzles, level parts, and mechanics that it would be awful

          3. Yes but done by pro devs and not modders, also i’ll assume that controller to KB/M transition is more fluid than VR to controller or KB/M, since a lot of the core game design itself has to change, not just changing the controls layout and tweaks to the AI and the FoV

          4. Finished BM for the 3rd time about 2 weeks ago, 1st time was the HL2 mod version without Xen back in 2011, then i got the stand-alone early access and replayed it when they added cascade shadows dynamic lighting, no i’m not underestimating modders, especially HL modding community which is the best in my opinion, i was making models and maps myself for some mods in HL1 when i was young, that was the game that introduced me to modding… But Crowbar Collective are a bit special, actually they became true professionals through the time and were not really modders since 2013, and still they took 14 years, if i have to wait half this time to play a proper VRless version of HLA that’s ok, i’ll wait, but for now i have an Index, and i’m going to blast through the game for a second time, in VR, the way it meant to be played, and i hope someday more people will be able to experience it.
But as i said, the game itself has to change a lot to be decent on KB/M, go watch some videos of it, especially the combats and the pacing, it will be meh at best, it’s like trying to put an elephant in a fridge

          5. It’s not a full remake, just tweaks to make it work flawlessly without VR, i doubt it will take 14 years.

          6. It’s possible, but go watch the game yourself, i can wreck it on a hour with proper strafe movement + mouse aiming, the combats will be really easy, because there are not so much enemies at once, adding more enemies will require more large environments so all the level design has to change.
And what about the seamless interaction with physics objects ?? All the fun you can get from it will just vanish, also how to look under a desk or table to get items ?? how to get you neck and head into a vent or a pipe on flat screen ? On a flat screen you HAVE to enter the vent to explore it !! The level 7, involving a blind unbeatable boss, literally requires you to be careful with your physical gesture to avoid sudden movement that can break stuff and trigger the monster, it was so tense and never experienced such a thing in 25 years of gaming, Alien Isolation did the same thing, i’m not saying that the game itself is groundbreaking, but the way you experience it ? Yes it is, i never crisped my whole body taking care of what’s in my way to not break bottles, taking them carefully to place them somewhere else while avoiding touching something, all of this with the creature still looking for you, and avoid breathing toxic gas by covering your mouth with your hand because Alyx can cough and trigger the monster, maaaaaan…
Is a normal version of HLA welcome ? Yes absolutely
Is it necessary ? Yes, the fans need to know about the story
Is it going to be better ? It’s an absolute NO, not even close

          7. Yeah i get it, the game would be different, i’m not claiming otherwise, but i take issue with this quote:

“Is it going to be better ? It’s an absolute NO, not even close”

The thing is that taking away the VR would take away some of the smoke and mirrors designed around it, one of the reasons Valve put so much puzzle and non shooting segments is because VR is lacking in this department.

          8. The only thing really lacking is the movement, not the shooting itself, but in VR, R stands for “reality”, and in reality you don’t do gunfights by strafing and jumping all over the place
I’m aware that the game is not very action packed, not just because of VR or the movement speed but also because Valve wanted to make the game accessible to those who are not used to it, i’m new to VR myself and still found the combats really easy, so i consider this as the main flaw of the game, but there’s a room for improvement for the next big VR game

    2. Runs better performance wise, probably. It will always play worse with a mouse and keyboard though.

      1. How will it play worse since the games was designed around VR sucking in the first place? Enemies are super slow and stationary, imagine a FEAR 1 VR game, most people would find that too hard lmao.

        1. That’s the whole point of my comment. Take VR out and it will just suck and nothing can fix that aside from scrapping the game and doing a fan game.

      1. Seriously this is how you’re imagining people who got headsets ?? You’re comparing them to a bunch of console kids even tho i didn’t saw any VR owner acting like d*ck here ? No i’m not pissed, not at all and a VRless mod for HLA was predictable

        1. “You’re comparing them to a bunch of console kids even tho i didn’t saw any VR owner acting like d*ck here ?”

          I did saw.

          1. HAHA here you are i was expecting you, hope you’re fine with all this sh*t, no i’m not upset by HLA being modded to be non VR, nor are the VR players, so i don’t see any reason to be compared to b*tthurt Sony fans crying over losing an exclusive, i’m actually glad that HL fans can at least experience the story, but facts are facts, this is never going to be as good as with VR

          2. Never say never, a modded HL2 is leaps and bounds better than the original, why won’t a modded HL Alyx be as well?

          3. like i said in the other comment, it will need a lot of redesign to be just ok, but anyway i’m not against the idea, there are some parts that i can’t imagine without VR, these part will either be cut or completely dumbed down to an inferior design, like that part when you have to cover your mouth with your hands physically to avoid breathing toxic gas, and many others…

          4. So how is pressing a button to hold your breath actually worse than putting your hand in your mouth? It’s even more hygienic…

          1. And why ? Are you seeing people upset about a non VR HL ?? This is just frustration at this point, so deal with it

          2. And why ?? Are you seeing people upset about a non VR HL ? It’s just frustration at this point, so deal with it

      2. why would I be pissed? your poor peasants are playing a subpar mod of how the game is meant to be played. maybe if you actually had a job you wouldn’t be complaining about the game and actually be playing it

          1. how is it buyer’s remorse? i still get to play the game and you still play a shell of a game.

    1. How? It looks stripped back, lacks the atmosphere of Alyx. I’m 6 hours in and this looks inferior.

      1. Think about what you said for a minuite: You have a game made for VR. You take the VR out, and the game is now worse. Thats evidence of VR making games better then. 😀

        1. Or maybe the game gets better without VR, people alrady complaining that the shooting is mediocre because people suck at shooting in VR.

      2. That doesn’t make sense. VR as a experience is superior because of the interactivity of the world you in. How are going to throw grenades? Grab items from hard to reach areas? Solve puzzles?

This 2d version is going to play like a*s, but y’all going to eat it up like pigs at a trough

        1. “How are going to throw grenades?”

Games back then you coudn’t throw grenades… lol are you a child?

“Grab items from hard to reach areas?”

Games before HL Alyx you coudn’t grab itens from hard to reach areas! Ok…

          “Solve puzzles?”

Ah, i gave up, too much stupidity in one comment.

          1. You sir, are a idiot. You can only store two miscellaneous items in Alyx, and those can be for grenades or health items.

You can physically grab grenades, press a button to time a detonation and physically throw said grenades. There’s a part in the game where you have to throw grenades very high in order to access the area. Unless you are it with a mouse, it’s going to be very hard to be accurate.

In Alyx you get gravity gloves that allows you to grab hard to reach items in the game, especially from barnacles.

The puzzles in Alyx are all 3D puzzles that requires constant tracking and hand movement. Especially if you want extra items.

They’re all things you can do in other games, but they’re extremely different cases here.

      3. or vr elevates games to a higher level that is impossible compared to the usual way we are playing…

    2. NO actually i’m glad for non VR people and HL fans, really !! Sadly i know that this game will never be as good as with VR because it was designed around it

      1. me too they need to see why the game was made for vr…the problem is that some low iq people might interpret it as being a bad game when they will play it in non vr

    3. Im not pissed and ill tell you why: Beside not being a whiney juvenile like most anti VR kids tend to be; this game was designed from the ground up for VR. There are things in the game that just cant be done with the propper flair without being in VR. Perspectives youll never see on a flat screen. The non VR version of the game will be like a mobile FPS is to PC Quake 3.

Instead of complaining like a jealous child, get a job and buy yourself a VR headset. Youll be glad you did.

      1. Hundreds of dollars for one “movie ticket”. Nice logic there. I think about VR when it becomes mainstream and has more games on it than Alyx and few indie shaits

        1. I paid £330 to watch a theatrical production on the Westend a few months ago. Thouroughly enjoyed it too. Why? Because I can. I dont pay £330 every time I want to play a VR game. Theres some logic for you.

          1. What i mean is that Alyx is the only worthwhile VR game at, atleast for me. So buying expensive tool just to play it for a few hours. Not my ideal way to spend money.
I also want to play couple of PS exclusives but to buy console just for them? No thanks Sony.

Infact i used similar money to buy robot vacuum so i dont need to dance with the stick anymore xD

      2. You look indeed pissed for no reason.

“There are things in the game that just cant be done with the propper flair without being in VR.”

Probably the irrelevant things like manipulating objects or some stupid hacking minigame.

“The non VR version of the game will be like a mobile FPS is to PC Quake 3.”

Lmao this VR game kinda looks like a high profile mobile FPS.

          1. Bragging about owning a VR sounds childish as hell. How many times did you hurt your head playing the thing?

          2. Try to pass the buck eh? 😀 How mature of you.
As a matter of fact I did bump my head when playing Budget Cuts once. Tried to stick my head through a hole in the virtual world and forgot about the real world. Thats how immersive VR is. Unfortunately you cant experience this because you’re unemployed…

Bragging makes you jelous, juveniles cry.

          3. “As a matter of fact I did bump my head when playing Budget Cuts once.”

            Lmao aren’t you a rich r-tard?

          4. If it helps you feel better about being a jelous, juvenile dole waller then yes, go with that.

          5. Laughing without feeling better huh… Like a manic, crazy, confused laugh then; is that what envy and jealousy does to you?

          6. More like a sensible chuckle, but try not to hit your head again next time you play with your toys, right kiddo?

          7. You contradict youself. A sensible chuckle would imply that feeling sorry for me makes you feel better enough to chuckle about it. You said it doesnt therefore the laugh you thanked me for cant have been sensible at all.

          8. But you are the one inventing a scenario where I purposely bang my head against a wall for immersion. The inventive mind of an autistic dosser.

          9. > Inventing a scenario
“As a matter of fact I did bump my head when playing Budget Cuts once. Tried to stick my head through a hole in the virtual world and forgot about the real world.”

            smh

          10. You said “purposely bump your head against a wall for immersion”. I never said anythying about doing on purpose, I never said it was a wall and i never said it was for the sake of immersion.

            Again: Inventing a scenario.

          11. “purposely bang my head against a wall for immersion.”

Lmao you are quoting yourself you f-ing r-tard. Read your own comments, it’s embarassing i know, but it is for your own good.

          12. You cant tell the difference between your post and mine. Yet you call me an r-tard… 😀

“As a matter of fact I did bump my head when playing Budget Cuts once. Tried to stick my head through a hole in the virtual world and forgot about the real world. Thats how immersive VR is”

            vs

“I’m not the one banging my head on the wall for “muh immershun””

…where do you think you went wrong? Can you tell yet? Take as much time as you need.

          13. Here’s what i typed stupid: “I’m not the one banging my head on the wall for “muh immershun”.”

Then here’s what your stupid pea brain typed in response: “But you are the one inventing a scenario where I purposely bang my head against a wall for immersion.”

Making assumptions much? I don’t care if you bang your head purposefuly or not, you are still stupid, and probably part of one of those VR/Kinect/Nintendo Wii fail videos.

          14. You clearly insinuated that I purposely bang my head against a wall for immersion. I didnt say I did, nor did I insinuate that I did it on purpose for immersion… Therefore you invented it. How hard is that to grasp?

You lost son. In your state its probably best you stay on welfare.

          15. And then you use your own quote instead of mine to somehow “prove” that i did that. Talk about a genius!! A genius who gets hurt with the new gimmicks he buys, keep it up and you will get an Dawkins awards, just like the poor blokes who get themselves killed by doing selfies with smartphones.

          16. I didnt get hurt. I didnt say I got hurt, I didnt insinuate that I got hurt. I merely said that I bumped my head one time because i was immersed in VR… What will you invent next?

      3. “Instead of complaining like a jealous child, get a job and buy yourself a VR headset. Youll be glad you did”
No i don’t like VR and it’s simple cause it’s not my thing. But i don’t hate VR, but damn i hate kids who act superior because they have VR… Like you…

        1. I have a job and I have VR. I am able to do something that you are not. Therefore I AM superior, no two ways about it. You sit in the corner crying about people enjoying something you dont have and thats how it will be. Get a job and get VR instead of hating something you likely never tried.

          1. I don’t give a fok about your life, you stupid *hit. you answer what you said in your comment.

          2. you called for people to have the coronavirus. you have no room to talk pathetic low life

          3. And what are you going to do about it? Cry more? Kill yourself you pathetic little fä??öt. Or no, just wait for corona.

          4. yeah you’re one to talk, telling people who like VR to get the coronavirus. give me a break you lowlife

          5. Yeah… no. Dumbašš. I like VR myself, i didn’t tell anyone that likes VR to get corona, i told a fvking idiot to get corona. Not because he likes VR. But i get it, you don’t know how to read. I can tell english is not your language.

          6. This is what i’m talking about… more hate for nothing you miserable gay *hit. and keep downvoting me.

          7. You also said that it’s a gimmick as well. So that tells me 2 things: One, you tried out cell phone VR or two, you went to a VR arcade and tried out gimmick games. I have let a large pool of my friends play alot of VR games and they all speak differently about than those who tried phone/arcade VR.

          8. The fact that I have a job and the disposable income to obtain quality of life makes me superior. The fact that you obviously dont makes you less likely to get laid.

        2. I’m not acting superior at all myself, i see more people acting superior for not having VR than the opposite

    4. Nah, I’m actually excited to see what modders are capable of producing. Bought the Valve Index for this game, VR has a lot of potential, it just needs more games like this for sure. If the modding community are able to fully translate it and make it play like a traditional flat screen game then we’ll see whether or not Valve was right for making this title VR exclusive. It’ll bring about an interesting discussion.

People should at least appreciate the fact that they’re trying to innovate in uncharted territories. They already said that the future of VR for them will be determined based on the reception they receive. And so far it seems like people are pretty collective about it being a phenomenal experience.

  8. I wont buy a vr headset for one game even if i did try vr multiple time and loved it but the price of admission is still too high for mostly bit sized gameplay experiences, but renting the equipment for a few days just for this game would be nice

    1. Glad to see a non VR owner acting like an actual adult on this site, hope things will turn as you want, more games + a reduced price

      1. because i actually tried vr a lots of time from htc vive and occulus rift and i tried many motion control gaming stuff in my life as gamer like the ps2 eyetoy the wii and the kinect(i loved dance central on this one) and vr compared to all those stuff is far from being a gimmick it might not replace completely the way we play but its definitely enhance and change everything when you play in vr it just lacked a killer app and right now half life alyx is that killer app

btw is this websife is full of negationist pessimistic people that just cant seem to find anything positive to say about anything,it was not always like that but lately any comment sections is full of bashing and hate idk why so many frustrated gamers flocks here.

        1. That’s a big mystery HAHA And you’re right, everyone who get to try VR will love it, as you said it’s not here to replace classic Controller/KBM + Screen but rather offer an alternative, and it’s a needed alternative as we saw in this generation innovation in game design seems stuck, rather just polishing existing formulas or get to the past, i’m not against this, i’m playing classic non VR games most of the time, just as i’m not against VR and the fresh ideas that comes with
My only experience with motion control before VR is the Wii, it was cool but as you said, it’s not even close to what VR is and can do, hope there will be more games coming, and a more stable market for headsets that will lead to more affordable hardware, but for now, we have to deal with people b*ching without any argument and knowledge while actually knowing that the main problem is the pricing and the small catalog

  9. Glad for people who want to know about the story, which is very good and full of surprises btw, finished the game yesterday, on of the best experiences i had in my life, i have 2 main cons, Combine combats are frustrating because they’re always involving very few enemies, Valve did for the sake of accessibility and people who are used to VR will just blast through the enemies like it was nothing, also and always for the sake of accessibility i guess, there’s tons and tons of ammo and healing items which makes the returning survival horror vibe of HL1 useless as you’re never out of ammo or health.
But absolutely everything else is fantastic, the level design, the atmosphere, sound design, the f*cking interactivity and level of detail and polish, the varied situations…
The most insane thing is that with such level of interactivity, i felt more freedom in small rooms than in any other open world, and it has one of the best blind boss levels of all times where you have to literally be careful with your gesture to not trigger it
VR is just missing more games at this point, with a more vast catalog it totally worth it people, but i can understand people who don’t want to buy just for one game

        1. They are, but the fact they have a long windup time before attacking makes it a very tense situation. A couple with some poison Headcrabs and some regular ones at once… makes me scream like a little girl.

          1. HAHA, i know what you’re talking about, i almost turned blue in fear in the Jeff section, but i was a bit disappointed with the Poison Headcrab not taking your life to 1% anymore, but i was glad at the same time because the first time they appeared i almost died lol

  10. What did I tell you…
And retards told me “duuuuh it’s designed for VR, you stupid duuuuh”…
    lol f*** you all.

    1. Have you played VR? If not, then you might not understand how things work on it. They designed the game around VR freedom of movement, so in order to experience it the way it’s designed, it doesn’t translate into non-VR gaming. Now.. can Source engine EASILY allow someone to move around your character with mouse and keyboard? Of course.. anyone with a brain knew that wasn’t what was being expressed when they said it wasn’t possible to make in to non-VR. Hopefully you weren’t that stupid that you took it that way.

Someone might mod it to be able to cheaply interact with objects and one can playthrough the game.. but if Valve had made it their intention to do it like that, it’d take another year or so to develop it so it worked that way. They made a VR game. In order to play it the way it’s meant to be experienced.. you need to play it in VR.

      1. lol I know…
But I keep saying since the very first day that eventually, modders will make it possible, and everybody was telling me it was impossible.
But we’re getting there. And not only with this game, actually.
Now, of course, I can imagine that some people will tell me “wouldn’t it be easier to just buy a VR headset anyway?”
But I’m not interested at the moment.

    2. and this will prove that this game was designed for vr when you will struggle with controls and wont be as immersed the way it was designed to

    1. It’s Source engine, so not exactly hard to make a character controllable with a keyboard and mouse.

  11. going VR only was a big big mistake for them. name one of your friends who has a VR headset? none. and I’m sure i won’t buy a VR headset to play one game. out of the entire gaming community there’s probably 2% who has VR.

    1. stop being poor. problem solved. did you even look into the user and critic reviews? it’s all very positive. get a grip you moron

      1. the only moron here is you. look at mouse and keyboard users vs virual rality you idiot. you’re so dumb the reviews don’t matter when talking about the users numbers. spending money on a Vr headset to play few games is so stupid which obviously you are.

        1. cry some more you loser. i get it you are poor and cant afford VR. maybe stop complaining like an idiot and actually get a better job?

          1. You know to type anything thing else than “i get it ur poor lmao”. As i said, you can buy a vr, but a brain… never. I like when r3tard? like yourself act so superior and edgy. But in real life are just some possies that talk sh*t behind a keyboard. Well, your experience will improve at least, you can talk sh*t now in VR too. Lmao

    2. I mean, the Steam statistic speak for themselves. Only a few people actually own them. That might’ve changed with Alyx and Boneworks, but they are still a minority.

  12. 10/10 experience becomes a broken 5/10 experience. If people don’t lower their expectations massively, this will be what ruins Half Life for people. Modders should make a separate game with the assets instead.

          1. Go fok yourself, you son of a b*tch, sick and tired of you and scum like you. block me if you don’t like to see comments made by me. cause this is what i’m going to do motherf*cker. don’t replay to me you *hit head.

  13. That happened a lot faster than I expected. Figured people would start doing their magic once the Source 2 engine or the modding tools becomes available to the public. Still, I’m happy I bought a VR headset for this, although I haven’t started playing it yet. Might do so later in the evening.

It may work out really well being translated onto flat screens once it gets the polish it needs but clearly the game was intended to be played the other way. Either way we’ll see sooner or later if Valve are truly in the wrong for making it VR exclusive.

  14. Someone hasn’t been on One Angry Gamer. Compared to this site I would say it’s night and day. It’s infested with incels that are always trying to find a reason to be to be mad about something and constantly blame the world for it. A prime example of why having complete freedom of speech isn’t necessarily a healthy thing.

      1. Lmao wtf?! Unlike everybody I know in person I actually respect people like Trump and conservatives, with some caveats of course. Both sides of the spectrum have their downsides.

The dudes on OAG are all hypocrites, constantly complaining about how the media love to virtue signal whatever topic at hand, without realising that they’re doing the same exact thing with their racist agenda. In my world that’s what you call a paradox.

So you’re wrong, I’m not a leftist. I just like to call out on people’s stupidity. And the guys on there show obvious signs of anti-social behaviour. Something an incel would do. Yet meanwhile you had nothing of value to say so you decided to call me an incel back. Clever.

I wouldn’t even bother mentioning that site but clearly a lot of guys who go on there have started come on here which is annoying to say the least.

        tl;dr, you’re a moron.

  15. Wow these comments … guess I’ll give my own 2 cents for what it’s worth.

As an avid VR gamer, I really like this game and agree that taking out the VR kinda takes the fun out the game. It may sound silly but moving objects in the world, interacting with the puzzles, just looking around everywhere for resin is so much fun and with how good the game looks, it is a joy to just look around the world you are placed in. If you make it flat, I don’t think it will be a special game even with a flawless conversion.

On the other hand, I do understand non VR gamer’s frustration. The first Half Life game in over 13 years is a VR exclusive and this right after Valve released a 1.000 dollar headset. I get that people are upset and if this pleases them, more power to them. I think both sides need to chill out. The VR fanatics shouldn’t harp on this project and the non VR players shouldn’t harp on those enjoying the game.

One odd thing though. If the story is what people are worried about, they know it is a prequel? I mean, people are asking for Half Life 3 to see the NEXT part of the story and not what came before? I mean sure you get some insight but nobody asked for the timeframe between 1 and 2. People wanted what came after 2 and I am sure that one will be flat.

Bottom line. Great VR game. I think the flat version will be very boring but if it makes people happy, then I’m all for it.

    1. Saying that you are a VR gamer is on the same level that claiming that you are a Mobile one. VR is stil crap, it improved a lot and took major leaps (this “game can be considered one, strikes me as a tech demo more than anything else, but companies have sold worse things in the pass for much more than this)…still is not there, and won’t be in a reasonable state for a while.

      1. how can you call it crap if you’ve never played it yourself? you just watch youtube videos on it and claim to know all about VR somehow.

      2. Sorry but games like Half Life Alyx, Asgard’s Wrath, Lone Echo (which is getting a sequel), Boneworks, The Walking Dead Saints and Sinners, Stormland and No Man’s Sky are not tech demo’s. And if rumors are true (coming from the same source who predicted Alyx), Left 4 Dead VR is next.

Not to mention, the comparison is just odd. Mobile games are hated for their disgusting business practices. VR games are hated because they are usually smaller games. But now that’s changing, people still complain as if VR games aren’t allowed to be big so you can mock them.

And look. VR is not for everyone. I also think it is insane to claim that VR will one day take over. I think their is plenty of room for both. But I was also very skeptical of VR but ever since I got it, if I play by myself, 80% of the time I play VR. I guess that makes me a bad person.

  16. Whelp looks like my 1 arm crippled *ss may actually be able to play this one day…had they just added m/kb support instead of forcing people to buy controllers with a expensive headset I’d have bought it already. I’ve considered buying one just for Dirt Rally and Project Cars since I own a wheel but I don’t use it enough to justify the purchase, after 15 years I was willing to make the sacrifice but it seemed Valve weren’t willing to meet me halfway.

  17. wow look at the comments. VR people are even worse than console peasants. they’re so edgy and trying so hard to convince us that VR is better. umm the game will be fully playable with the only good way mouse and keyboard and there’s nothing you can do about t.

    1. “VR people are even worse than console peasants”

lol I’ve seen more hate from non-vr people on here including yourself. maybe if you weren’t poor to begin with you wouldn’t be complaining about it being VR only?

  18. Yeah no thanks.

I’d rather wait till I can afford a VR set never from now than disgrace the game by playing it like this.
