It’s been almost a year since the release of current-gen consoles and surprisingly enough, the PC modded version of Skyrim still gives current-gen open world games a run for their money. To put it simply; modders have been able to overhaul Bethesda’s RPG to the point that it can rival – and even surpass – games releasing one generation afterwards. We certainly hope that ‘truly’ current-gen open world games will look better than this (or those that have been released thus far), so here is hoping that developers will learn something from the works of these guys. Is it just me or these modded Skyrim screenshots do not impress me anymore.
I think it’s because we all know exactly where on the map these shots are, so we know what’s changed, we know how it looked unmodded. It takes away from the spectacle.
I’m still amazed at the work of the modders, I’m just constantly disappointed in seeing these shots because I remember how burnt out I got on this game after so many hours playing and I know I have no intention of reinstalling it just to see these mods because it’s SUCH a PIA to go thru again.
It’s just because these screenshots are unimpressive, except Image 9 probably. I’ve seen better from Skyrim, and you probably too.
Because we have seen nice ground textures and cool dragons already. There is a limit, skyrim is already 3 years old and running DirectX9 etc..
The mods just make the game look awesome but I just can’t play the game any more because it seriously lacks depth and feels repetitive.Quests, fetch me this, I’ve lost that, 20%, 40%, 80% more damage with the dumbed down level system and before you know it you can kill everything with a two handed hammer or sword.

You shouldn’t need mods to fix the repetitive game design, did they even test it and people constantly talking about the same thing as you pass them get on their nerves? No, they didn’t or they thought the wider audience Bethesda were aiming for just wouldn’t care.
I don’t mind the NPCs talking about something you’ve heard before but not when you pass then and it’s directed at you. Yes, I’ve met the blacksmith’s father, you ask me to take him a sword for the Yarl remember? !?*# sake.
My favorite was killing dragons with one arrow. Yeah, eventually you become god-like in that game, and relatively quickly.
I hope they really improve the combat in the next one – maybe add in some counters for melee and spell attacks. Co-op, too.
Oddly enough, I never experienced that one-arrow dragon thing ever. How does someone reproduce it? I’ve seen a video on Youtube, but I’ve played on Legendary and the dragons have always leveled up with my character. They’re easy to kill, but not one-hit wonders from what I’ve seen.
Also I don’t think co-op would work with single-player RPGs like TES honestly.

Maybe those new games simply have more textures, skyrim is a rather simple looking game without mods. Also that 6GB is a joke and the textures aren’t any better, only completely uncompressed which is stupid.

I think the reason why AAA devs can’t make games with this kind of graphical fidelity is because of lack of budget and dedication.
Dedication because it will take a lot of time to make these kinds of textures and post-processing effects. The devs are fed up on making the best out of their games because they have been on the industry for the longest time and have lost their passion or just doing it to put food in the table(of course I’m not talking about every dev *cough *cough CDPR *cough). However, the modders are really dedicated(even though they’re doing it for free) because they love the game.
Budget because making a game with this kind of graphical fidelity takes a lot of time which means more money to spend for salaries and stuff. Especially if a game is being published by a big company that has hundreds of staff making one AAA game.
I think a lot of games start out with this kind of fidelity but then get really cut down to size so that they work on consoles. RAGE is a perfect example of this. Those artists slaved away on their computers for years making those enormous, amazing textures for that game and in the end the textures had to be compressed so badly that 90% of the work was essentially wasted.
Crytek had this kind of dedication for FarCry and Crysis 1.
Well those textures don’t paint themselves, they takes time to make. and in the gaming industry it also takes money. lets just praise the modders who commit to making these improvements instead of comparing the modded game to other AAA. Skyrim in itself is not a great game to begin with when it comes to depth, story, and gameplay.
It’s not like the devs don’t have the time and money to make textures like these, it’s just the hardware limitations. Also a full game that already takes 30gb of space would take much more with this quality and people don’t want to download a >50gb file.

Its not just the specs even the boxes are cheap, they feel more like ps2 than x360/ps3, cheap plastic. They have gone really cheap on both systems to make them affordable.

Yes, because getting stuck on a quest because of vague wording is so enjoyable. I’m guessing you didn’t play games in the late 90’s to early 2000’s, quest marker is a marvelous time saver. Long gone are the day of clicking on every NPC over again just to make sure he/she was part of that quest. Morrowind is one of the worst offender, with NPC having dozen of useless and identical dialogue. Sorry, but I don’t’ want to go back to that time.. beside, every quest still has a written description so nothing’s loss.

the reason people never post videos with the mods on and it’s only pictures it’s because when you play it, in motion it really doesn’t look that impressive.
Looks like the same stiff animations to me in these screenshots. How does that make sense? Makes as much sense as trying to make any point with still, post processed images.

I bought Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning (complete) and Skyrim Legendary Edition two weeks ago but I started Kingdom of Amalur first and have to say that the game is quite cool and bigger than I expected it to be. Combat and customization are great…the inventory is crap though but the game is quite fun and the story is good so far.
Then I’ll download and play Skyrim with a couple of mods for sure.
