World War Z has sold almost 2 million copies worldwide, Epic Games Store is its top/best digital platform

Saber Interactive has announced that World War Z has sold almost two million copies worldwide on all platforms since its launch, and that the Epic Games Store has exceeded its expectations. The game has sold nearly 700K copies on the Epic Games Store, making it the top/best digital platform for this zombie co-op shooter.

Matthew Karch, CEO of developer Saber Interactive, claimed that the studio always believed that there was a PC market for this game, and that the team was surprised by its PC sales.

“We always believed the game would find a good following on PC eventually. The surprise was just how quickly it happened, and how important Epic’s platform was in getting us there.

On the PC specifically, we are performing way above expectations thanks to the support we have received from the Epic Games Store.”

Karch also commented on the backlash the team has received over its decision to release the game exclusively on the Epic Games Store.

“We don’t see backlash when console manufacturers create games that are just for their hardware, and buying a system for a game is obviously a much more onerous requirement. My hope is that once there is feature parity on the PC platforms, we won’t hear as much complaining”

  1. This isn’t like console manufacturers making 1st party games. In one of Tim’s little Twitter rants, he screwed up and flubbed that he didn’t know the differences between 1st and 3rd party games. This dumb a** doesn’t either. After what the Samurai Showdown director insinuated, how many of those sales went to Epic themselves? I had no issue with this at first. If you announce exclusivity off the bat, fine. Wait the time, get it on the platform of choice. But to snipe kickstarter games, and grab games in the 11th hour after Steam and GOG promote them, then having to listen to Tim Sweeney lie, and guys like Karch here being forced to make these *statements* just really turns me off. Keep your free games Epic, and your “exclusives” you aren’t fooling anyone. This is failing and you know it.

    1. Yes, those 700k copies are not real.

Atleast, that is what we must believe.

For the cause ! HNYAAAAA !

      1. Oh no… I would more than happily take their word for it. Until…. The Samurai Showdown producer spoke up. When he made the comment about guaranteed sales I was like.. Wait.. What? I want prices down. I want competition. H**l I’m a GOG fan. If it is available there. I buy it there. This current Steam sale is proof enough that Valve has gotten complacent. But man Epic is just….. Well they are just…… They are just straight trash.

        1. Sure, but I’m just not sure why people are denying the fact that some games are doing well on the Epic Store. Clearly a lot of people do not care about having to use an inferior launcher in most cases.

          1. I wasn’t until that comment from the Samurai Show producer. Now I’m confused. I just don’t want console fragmentation and fanboy wars on PC, and it’s happening.

          2. Why so mad about Samurai Showdow? He tried to make the game PC exclusive by denying the game be multiplatform, if memory doens’t fail me. It’s about time PC gamers get their exclusives and shut off consoles for good.

          3. What are you talking about?!?!? I’m not angry at the Sam Showdown producer at all. He made a comment in an interview that Epic offered them the moon to go exclusive. In the interview he made the comment about guaranteed sales, that line confused me, because I took away from it he was implying that Epic was saying they would buy the first *insert number here*.

          4. It is already common knowledge that Epic offers money for exclusivity deals (be it temporary and partial exclusivity), and they give money if the game fails to sell, or so i heard, so why are you confused?

          5. I’m sorry maybe I wasn’t clear. I meant when the producer made that comment he made it sound as if Epic was guaranteeing sales. I don’t know whether to take that as these are copies Epic are purchasing themselves which would lead to inflated numbers (I must admit seeing any positive sales figures from Epic shocks me because of the massive amount of negativity towards the store.) Or if they back a dump truck full of money up to the doorstep and drop it off.

          6. If memory doesn’t fail me, i think Epic promises to fund development cost in the case of the game failing to sell, which isn’t a bad deal for me (and for the devs that take it). Did that happen with WWZ? Can’t say, but i can’t care either.

          7. Nothing is going to happen. This launcher stuff is sooo insignificant, and as time passes, people will care less and less, so long as they avoid situations like Shenmue 3

Steam will be fine, Epic will be fine.

And at the end of all this, if Epic does end up somehow successfully pushing a 88/12 split as standard, it will be well worth it, because that’s something that most people care about – games. A ~25 percent increase in profitability is a big deal, because on average that means production value goes up, and we get more games in general.

  2. OUR ONLY PLATFORM TO BUY THE GAME ON IS THE MOST SUCCESSFUL PLATFORM… IN RELATED NEWS THE SKY IS BLUE AND I GOT A HAIRY A$$

  3. Listening to CEOs talk is like listening to a spoiled rich kid. He truly believes everything he says is right regardless of how retarded it sounds.

    1. Yeah, it surprises me as well to learn they are humans and not some lizard race from another planet. Ok, some of them may as well be…

    1. Don’t see much of an appeal to pirate a Left4Dead clone. Ain’t those games best played co-op or something?

        1. But you can do that with any game, so I don’t get your point. Face it, most PC gamers are not raving mad Steam fanboys like yourself. We’re gamers and the platform the games are released on doesn’t matter.

          1. lol you dont speak for me and the other 100+ million games that support epic

  4. But I kept on being told nobody would buy the game and it would fail because it was on EGS, and that gamers wouldn’t purchase anything on the store, what happened?

Wait a second. The controversy behind EGS was bullshit and the internet was wrong again and stuck in perpetual echo chamber mode, with a heaping spoonful of manufactured outrage that most people don’t give a flying f*ck about.

Very shocked right now. Very, very, very shocked.

    1. You don’t understand.

It’s not 700k copies, it’s actually 700. I know this because any number from Epic games or associates must be a lie according to rule #1 of DSOG comments circlejerk.

      1. You forgot that they’re also purchased by Epic to make themselves look good, because nobody in the world was going to use the service. Not a single person ever wouldn’t care about the fake controversy surrounding it.

      1. Why, the game doesn’t seem that bad. Maybe i’ll pirate it someday to see what the fuss is all about.

      2. people didn’t buy this game, epic is very persistent in their lies, not a single proof is in their favor, all of the statistic like twitch views, youtube videos, number of people talking about this game don’t add up to t heir claims.
i’ve been looking at steamdb long enough to be able to estimate approximate number of sales, this game doles not look like a game that sells well, anyone who’s been looking at games and sales long enough can tell you that.

        1. Nailed it. There is nobody playing it on Twitch. No You tube vids with HIGH view counts. It is like all the fools who “want to believe in Tim little sWeeney” did not take a single business class in their life.

      3. I’ll agree with that since the game isn’t fun at all, but the idea that more than a drep subsection of gamers care about the controversy surrounding EGS is bullsh*t at best.

The average person doesn’t care and will continue to purchase games on EGS and it will become far more used than anybody who sits around dedicating time to actively hating it ever could have imagined.

If that leads to cheaper prices somewhere down the road if Steam/Valve ever stop deciding to be moronic with their inability to adapt to profit sharing being far more in favor for the independent studios. A AA. OR AAA developers that would be a wonderful sideffect.

        1. “If that leads to cheaper prices somewhere down the road ”

Dont be stupid if that was the case console exclusives would cost less since there is no need to pay the royality fees to the console manufacturer.

  5. How a game who sold 2 millions has only 43 people watching on twitch. Is it a joke or a lie ?

      1. it is, but statistically speaking, it’s a good way to tell whether they’re lying or not which they are in this case.

  6. “We don’t see backlash when console manufacturers create games that are
just for their hardware, and buying a system for a game is obviously a
    much more onerous requirement.

I love when these idiots with no idea what they’re talking about get to speak.

Yes you do. There’s absolutely backlash. The reason it isn’t as bad is because console players have accepted it.

This is PC. You don’t do this here.

    1. Steam could kill Consoles overnight if they would bring first party companies to make exclusive games to their platform (like Sony does, not Steam’s dumb free to play crap), but try convincing jihadistic corporate fanboys like Ugh or most of the internet comenteers.

lol, Imagine the damage for consoles if they could make a Steam exclusive GTA game.

“This is PC. You don’t do this here.”

Except they just did dummy, lol. and PC players already accepted it.

  7. ““We don’t see backlash when console manufacturers create games that are just for their hardware, and buying a system for a game is obviously a much more onerous requirement.”

Well there is always a backlash over exclusive games (or dumb corporate fanboy wars), it’s just that people can’t do sh*t about it. Steam could kill Consoles overnight if they would bring first party companies to make exclusive games to their platform (like Sony does, not their dumb free to play crap), but try convincing jihadistic corporate fanboys like Ugh or most of the internet comenteers.

  8. “We don’t see backlash when console manufacturers create games that are just for their hardware, and buying a system for a game is obviously a much more onerous requirement.”

Well there is always a backlash over exclusive games (or dumb corporate fanboy wars), it’s just that people can’t do she!t about it. 9. I wish more companies could pay money to release more games to PC. If we did have something like the EGS back in the PS3/Xbox 360 days, a lot of console exclusives (the ones that got released on both platforms, or Nintendo Wii, but not PC) could find their way to PC…

  10. Is it me, or are we living in an absolute brain-dead society, where only some gamers can tell the core difference between 1st and 3rd party games, yet devs and CEO’s and fanboys cannot.
