Modder ‘aC0C0NUT’ has released a brand new HD Texture Pack for Valheim that overhauls around 255 textures. This mod is a must-have for all Valheim players, unless of course you fancy the game’s pixelated visuals.

Going into slightly more details, this mod comes with 255 textures, fixes the Forstner Mist, adds Rainy Stormy Fog and Portal Diffuse. Additionally, all the Custom Textures are 2K resolution.

  • Swords(Iron, Silver, Black Metal)
  • Shields(Main Wood for iron and basic, Silver Shield, Black Metal Shield)-They have my Logo etched on them for now, in future versions ill make a separate one without. if you do not enjoy, feel free to take it out of your /CustomTextures Folder
  • Iron Armor

  1. Thanks for the mod showcase Tom, I didn’t know they had a texture pack out for valheim. I’ll go download it now, thanks!

  2. It’s hilarious how brutal those vanilla textures are. I have the game and while playing i thought it looked fine. But seeing that image above is pretty funny

    1. The game has a low poly and blocky texture design as part of the art style.

Textures this sharp and realistic are going to look completely out of place.

        1. Because the game tries to follow the early PS1 era were high definition textures didnt exist, add them in a low poly model and they look out of place. Is not different than those Minecraft HD textures packs.

          1. I disagree, just as an example, i prefer to play Quake 1 with Darkplace engine and high res texture, even if the enemy models are low texture. Minecraft is a bad example because it’s a game that is ugly on purpose, while Quake was cutting edge at the time.

          2. You are comparing apples to oranges while making a contradiction (the game is comparable with Quake but not Minecraft, even when Valheim looks ancient on purpose like Minecraft unlike Quake -at the time-).
I think the equivalent would be Quake 2 raytraced…if you have to mention Quake.
And minecraft is the perfect example since both games are open world going for the lowfi aesthetic. Quake at the time was quite advance visuals wise, of course it looks dated now even with custom modern engines something that Valheim isnt aiming for on purpose.

          3. I don’t disagree that Valheim and Minecraft looks ugly on purpose. And Quake 2 raytraced looks better than vanilla Quake 2 no matter the accusation that the game lost it’s atmosphere.

          4. False. Read up on the history of Minecraft. The reason Minecraft LOOKS the way it does is because when the original creator was working on the game, he was supposed to have someone do the graphics part of the game, and convert the voxels into something more 3D, but that guy backed out, and so the creator went with what he had. Turns out that many, many people like the design, but the game as it’s known for was NOT supposed to look that way.

          5. So the artist backed out and instead of replacing him he went ahead with the crappy graphics for whatever reason, i stand correct.

          6. But the models and lighting feel a bit too complex to remind of ps1 games. So instead of looking retro it feels like a modern game on the lowest settings (as if everything were made from clay).

          7. Is a game made in 2020, of course is trying to replicate something from 2 decades ago…is not gonna be accurate. Compare it with the latest Zelda if you want too, i dont care.
I found the style of it charming, the usual indie vibes in a competent made game. The textures are an improvement that the game doesnt need imho.

        1. I did… I thought the game looked fine but it really should not be pumping my video card to the max.

          1. It’s an indie game made by 5 people on the Unity engine, still in Early Access.
            Set performance expectations accordingly.

    1. It literally says Early Access in big letters on the Steam page. You don’t have to buy a pre-released game. It’s fantastic so far though.

      1. I’m finding the game brutal.
So much easier to fall in love with building rather than risking it all to wander Black Forest 😀

      1. I was thinking about how old games aged gracefully, like Half Life 2, Doom 3, Metal Gear Solid 2, Far Cry, Driver 3 etc. And how some indie games nowadays release automatically ugly and dated.

  3. – release a game with good gameplay but don’t bother with the visuals
    – people will finish the work for you, for free.
    Big brain time.

    1. Not everything has to look realistic or AAA tier of quality (i would argue that a lot of AAA games look like crap anyways, specially when it comes to textures).

    2. Do you expect some sort of miracle coming from a team of 5 people using the Unity engine?

The runaway success of this game was completely unexpected, don’t act as if they had millions to spend before it was on sale.

    3. They’re not actually leaving the visual improvements up to the fans. They’ve allowed modders to create things that add to / improve the game, but since the creators are busy with other things (roadmap), modders have jumped in with ports of texture packs, etc.

  4. Valheim installs in under 1GB of space. Let’s not forget the main reason is due to the low resolution textures which is part of its art style. These look nice but not really into the pallet changes and over saturation.

  5. Exactly, it’s supposed to be “PS1-like”. But we all know they chose this look like hundreds of other developers, just to make their work 10x easier.
Also, why are the models and lighting so complex? This doesn’t give off retro vibes but is rather more reminiscent of a prev-gen game running on the lowest possible settings. Everything looks like made from clay.

Also, I must use this opportunity to rag on another “artstyle”, namely “8-bit” characters (pictures below) who are apparently envisioned by people who’ve never played 8-bit games. Back then, developers tried to squeeze as much detail as possible from limited sprites. And this? It’s as if some chose them ONLY because they’re simple and butchered the whole appeal by thinking it’s just a bunch of arbitrary squares/rectangles and perpendicular 1-pixel lines.
    WTF is this, even?

    1. Real 8 bit, 16/32 bit era games used pixel art in their games, key word being “art”. Now these images are just pixels, zero art.

  7. Put some f*king work into these news, the lazy link is to nexus not the mod page, many news have no screenshots or movies that are only a few clicks to add to the post but no, not on this site

  8. More than doubling the game’s size … for a few textures updated.
And when textures are high res … the low polygon count becomes a concern.
Maybe better off letting the devs doing their part.

    1. I don’t mind the mesh between high res and low polygon models, better than lor res textures and low polygon models.

“Maybe better off letting the devs doing their part.”

If it’s up to them, not gonna happen.
