Turok Remaster Gets First Gameplay Trailer, Releases On December 17th

Night Dive Studios has released the first gameplay trailer for the upcoming remastered version of Turok. According to Night Dive Studios, this classic game has been restored and enhanced with a new visual engine and exciting new features. Pardon me but this new ‘visual engine’ is laughable as even the game’s textures are exactly the same. Not that this is a bad thing, but there is really no point advertising its ‘new visual engine’ when it looks this close to its original version. But anyway, the game releases on Steam, GOG and The Humble Bundle on December 17th. Enjoy!

  1. I think what they meant by visual engine was the ability to support higher resolutions and framerates, not actual graphical assets. Higher textures wouldn’t require a new engine in most cases.

    1. Draw distance and textures shouldn’t require much work on the engine. There’s also bloom and sunshaft shader effects though. I guess according to Activision or Ubisoft that would constitute a new engine 😉

  2. Where it the picture from? It looks like the N64 box art with some minor differences, like the hairstyle and lack of a satchel.

  3. i could never play this due to the fog, you couldnt see anything past your own nose. The levels were large mazes and you didnt have a map. Now they fixed that it might worth a while, i hope they do the same for turok 2 with wider fov and a map, that game has great weapons but the level design and the objectives are for the bin.

Also somehow we should convince them to update cybermage.

  4. Night Dive is primarily focused on restoring/preserving classic games, so I think that’s really their intent with this: provide as close to the original experience as possible while cleaning up the presentation a bit, as opposed to a true remake/remaster (this was how they handled System Shock and Strife). They have touted this as a remaster in a few instances though, so it’s their own fault if people expected better visual upgrades.

Personally, I’m happy enough to have it available on digital distribution without the fog, but it’d be great to see some modders release texture packs.
