During its earnings conference call for Q1 of fiscal year 2021, Take Two shared some new sales numbers for Grand Theft Auto 5, Red Dead Redemption 2, Borderlands 3, The Outer Worlds and NBA 2K20.
According to the team, Grand Theft Auto 5 has sold more than 135 million copies worldwide. Moreover, the game’s sales bolstered significantly by its free week on the Epic Games Store earlier in the quarter.
On the other hand, NBA 2K20 has sold more than 14 million units. Now while a lot of gamers have criticized the game’s lootboxes, it appears that this basketball game is still selling well. For instance, the NBA 2K series saw recurrent consumer spending up 126% year-over-year in Q1. So yeah, don’t expect the next NBA 2K games to have less MTX or lootboxes.
Additionally, Borderlands 3 has passed its 10 million goal, selling 10.5 million units on all platforms. Red Dead Redemption 2 has also sold over 32 million units on all platforms.
Lastly, The Outer Worlds has sold 2.8 million units so far on all platforms.
For comparison purposes, you can find Take-Two’s earlier sales numbers (for most of these games) here.

Sales bolstered by a free game? So Epic did pay for every taken copy?
They are talking about overall sales, meaning that those that got it for free spent money on the game’s MTX.
Probably should amend the article then. Saying “the game’s sales” implies sales of the game. Whereas you’re now clarifying that it meant no such thing because MTX sales is a different thing.
That’s the official word from Take-Two (what is included in the article). I’m just assuming in the comments that this is due to MTX. Or perhaps it forced more players to buy the Steam version. Take-Two hasn’t clarified what it means.
Then why aren’t they giving rdr2 for free and bolstering their sale number lol.
Of course Epic paid Take Two to give away GTA 5 on their platform.
@disqus_cwo1ReMd2h:disqus you mean you thought that Epic did not pay anything and that Take Two just decided to give away one of their biggest titles out of the kindness of their heart?
“On the other hand, NBA 2K20 has sold more than 14 million units.”
If you ever needed indisputable proof that “gamers”, are f**kin’ stupid.
its mostly the blacks and mexicans that buy it.
You carry your name well.
Stop being such an SJW, dude.
Correction; PEOPLE are fu*kin stupid in general. I’d say over 90% of people are just waste of space.
There’s no such thing as a gamer anymore. Like imagine blaming “moviegoers” for the success of the Transformers movies.
I also blame sports fans for the millions of dollars that the players and the clubs get due to viewers.
It’s bulls##t that giving the game away for free is considered sales numbers. That just annoys the hell out of me. It’s just a flat out lie!
well it is not a lie if somebody paid for the game. You think the games provided for free in bundles with your graphics card was generously donated by the game publisher?
14 million those brain dead sports fans are hurting the gaming industry
My advice instead is to just ignore sports. You think sports in the real world changes every year? Football or basketball does not change – it is the same game year in year out and this scam has been going on for many, many years. Yet players and their clubs make millions out of a tired game! Only the players (and payers!) change. Why do people watch sports on their TV or buy tickets to watch the game in person? It is always the same, it is just about some persons chasing after a ball.
