Steam sets new record with over 39 million concurrent players

Steam has just set a new record of concurrent players. Earlier today, Valve’s service passed over 39 million concurrent players. To be more precise, it hit 39,205,447 concurrent players.

Steam 39 million concurrent players

Steam set its previous record of 38 million concurrent players in September 2024. In other words, it took around three months to break it.

Let’s now take a look at the Top 20 Most Played Games in the last 24 hours.

Steam Top 25 39 million players

The most played game right now is Counter-Strike 2, followed by Dota 2. Path of Exile 2 is the third most played game in the last 24 hours, something that should please Grinding Gear Games. Another game that just came out, Marvel’s Rivals, is in the fourth place.

In fifth place, we find PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS. Rust, Grand Theft Auto 5 and Call of Duty are in seventh, eighth and ninth place, respectively. Delta Force which came out in Early Access is in the tenth place.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is still going strong as it was the twelfth most-played game this weekend. Farming Simulator 25 was in seventeenth place, whereas EA SPORTS FC 25 and STALKER 2 were in the twenty-third and twenty-fourth place, respectively.

And there you have it. Steam is still growing and, from the looks of it, it has not hit yet its ceiling. This is why most publishers want to be on Valve’s service. The PC crowd that is using it is huge.

It will be interesting to see when Steam will hit 40 million players. I can’t see this happening in December but hey, you never know. Nevertheless, it’s spectacular witnessing Steam’s continuous growth over the past few years.

Stay tuned for more!

  1. poor timmy tencent LOL, all the money spent on exclusives, free games and advertising against valve and it hasn't gained any ground, while steam is making record after record, we have to call it "epic fail store" ahhahahaha 👍🤣

    1. Poor Sweeney. I wonder if he will have a Twitter meltdown when Steam reaches 40 million. To bad he didn't listen to the thousands of PC gamers that were telling him from the beginning that he was doing it wrong 5 years ago.

The only way that he could have built a service to rival Steam as he said he was going to do is……to build a service that actually rivals Steam.

Well at least he finally admitted a while back that the timed exclusives was a financial failure but he still just doesn't get it completely.

    2. Microsoft is arguably the biggest loser in this situation. They have an OS, but other companies are profiting from it. If Microsoft had understood what PC gamers wanted—open source, modding, and no console-like restrictions on game stores—they could have thrived. Instead, they pushed to make PC gaming more like consoles, which alienated many gamers.

  2. What bothers me is the price of games. for several years now we have had consoles offering PC compatibility meaning cross platform development is simpler than ever. We also know that Steam's user base is growing year on year. Therefore you don't have to be a genius to come to the conclusion that the gaming market is also growing year on year.

So why are games being priced so high?

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle

    £85.99 – Premium Edition

Call of Duty®: Black Ops 6

    1. I don't know about the UK, but Steam is a lot less popular outside of the US due to its high prices and the expensive $. Most people never buy $50-$70 games and most don't even use Steam, Steam has increasingly become a bubble for rich Americans. It's the Apple brand of gaming.

The average gamer outside of the US can not afford $70 games and I'm sure some Americans can't either. People will wait here until games have discounts or are given away for free through Epic, GOG or Prime. And frankly, the average person doesn't have the hardware to run these AAA games to begin with.

      1. It's difficult to address your concern without knowing where you live but it's my understanding that prices are adjusted down in poorer countries. If you live in Western Europe then your standard of living is similar to the average person here in the US and in fact the standard of living has been falling here in the US and will continue to do so.

I think sometimes that most of the world believes the stereotype that everyone here in the US has pockets full of spending cash all of the time. Not true at all.

We have a massively bloated military but it's paid for in pretend money that is killing us with inflation.

      2. Are you kidding me ? The reason steam is so popular is because of its regional pricing in the first place. Many folks in third world countries actually buy games on steam rather than pirating them due to steam's regional pricing model. Baldurs gate 3 costs around $60 in USA or UK or other first world countries while i bought it for $30 in my third world country on steam.

  3. At this point it's clear that absolutely no one will be able to compete with Valve in the PC gaming store market, no matter how much money they throw at it.

The fact that Microsoft failed to create a viable store even though they dominate the OS market should have been enough clues for Epic Timmy to spend all that Fortnite money on something more useful, like fixing the stuttery design of Unreal Engine.

    1. Microsoft have an OS, but other companies are profiting from it. If Microsoft had understood what PC gamers wanted—open source, modding, and no console-like restrictions on game stores—they could have thrived. Instead, they pushed to make PC gaming more like consoles, which alienated many gamers.

      1. They have themselves to blame, they strong arm almost everything and disrespect the users choices at almost every turn like revering alot of settings each update. Who wants copilot snap shooting everything? Who wanted cortana to run? Disable all that bloat and the next update its mostly forcefully enabled again…

Want to install windows without a microsoft account? Sure work around the strong arming. If it wasn't for gaming i guess tons of people have returned the favor with the middle finger.

They then also have the stomach to cry that many "hack" windows in order to tailor it to their liking and preferences, kinda like windows in the good old days – That oddly didn't need such deeper "hacks" – Yet they say windows is evolving.. from the user perspective its in many cases devolving!

        1. It is true that MS is a pest and isn't satisfied with just giving gamers an OS and after that leaving us the hell alone but their real stranglehold is on the business world. Hundreds of millions of people go to work and they use Windows and MS Office there. That is what they know. The vast majority don't know that they have any other choice.

Before I retired I witnessed first hand the incredible challenge the IT dept faced just implementing a change from Win 7 to Win 10. People don't like change and some fight against it. This company was almost solely comprised of people with bachelors degrees a few had masters and a small few had PhDs. These were not stupid people but tech-illiterate like most people are. The thought of switching to Linux/ Open Office is unthinkable after seeing what I saw.

  4. So, the top games on that Steam bestseller image are: "Banana" apparently a crypto scam game, "Wallpaper engine", "Farming simulator", "Truck simulator", "EAsports" and some weeb game. All garbage.

The only games worth playing on that list are BG3, Stardew Valley and Stalker 2. All of which are avaible to buy on GOG DRM-free, instead of renting them from Steam.

What's the point of this Steam store full of DRM again? It's the sewer pit of gaming.

    1. LOL you have a really screwed top sellers list! Ignore 99% of the games? Mine have none of those beside farming 25. That said i agree about the renting and GoG statement!

  5. 40 Millions Right now!

You better update John – 40 Millions just Reached wohoo – thats f*kN EPIC Win (pun Intended as Sweeneys trash is as we all Know – EPIC Fail)
