Snowdrop-powered The Settlers will officially release on March 17th

Ubisoft has just announced that The Settlers will release on March 17th, 2022. In order to celebrate this announcement, the publisher released a new gameplay trailer that you can find below.

The Settlers promises to bring back the best, modernized elements from previous The Settlers titles. The game aims to combine these elements with brand new features and gameplay systems.

The Settlers will combine a fresh take on the familiar gameplay mechanics of the series with new features like a new food system and a motivational meta-game to create a unique game experience. Players will be able to play the campaign and optional side missions in solo or co-op modes.

The game will be using the Snowdrop Engine, and will also offer various online multiplayer modes. According to Ubisoft, the game will also have emotional storylines. Players will watch as thousands of settlers live their lives and complete their daily work.

Lastly, Ubisoft will launch a Closed Beta on January 20th. This beta phase will last until January 24th, and you can register for it via its official website.

  1. Gonna be real here, who exactly is pining for a new settlers, let alone it being only on U(can’t)play?.

    I see it flopping easily like the last one did.

    1. They probably need something in that genre in their portfolio to show their investors.
      Even if it doesn’t make much actual sense.

  2. Was kinda looking forward to this when it was announced but considering Ubi lately seems more hellbent on lecturing wokeness rather than at least try to be an entertainment company nowadays i wont hold my breath at all.

    1. Because that worked really well for EA and Frostbite right? you can’t use an engine and expect to work in every genre of game and not every game is Halo (started as RTS endsup as FPS, same engine)

    2. Very simple, if an engine and tool set can meet all of the requirements that the team has laid out for the project they can and should use it. You are acting as if game mechanics are inherently tied to the renderer pipeline and toolset which is not the case.

      In the case of Mass Effect and similar situations… it is very plain and simple. Studios are hiring too many people with art skills and not enough skilled programmers that can expand the toolset and optimize as needed per game. Too many game devs today just want easy tools with dropdowns and magical buttons. (Bethesda) Compounded with bad management teams, you will get trash products.

      Xcom EU was built on UE3, an engine which was widely known for its third person shooter prowess but as we can all attest, competent developers and programmers can build any style of game with UE3. Other great examples are the Arkham Series and Nether Realm studios with Injustice and MK.

      1. Its already mention by Bioware that Frostbite was difficult to work with and it missing UI toolset. And its very obvious. The other wrong thing they do is that they separate the engine team with the game developer team. This happened after BF4 and this went really bad for them. Frostbite and Dice used to be the same thing, not anymore.

    Why even bother uttering such things. It’s Ubisoft. The last time they released a game worth even half a s**t, I think gas was still under $2 a gallon.

    Everyone already knows this is going to be dogs**t. Just let things run their course.

  5. Snowdrop? No wonder its looking better than Age of Empires IV.
    But why didn’t they use their own, already stellar Anno engine?

  6. Maybe this one’s more optimized? Maybe they were able to optimize the Snowdrop variant to offer similar level of fidelity but at reduced perf cost? They want more people to try out the Settlers again?
    Funny thing : Snowdrop is created by the same devs responsible for World in Conflict.

  7. Probably same reason why EA forced the use of Frostbite for Mass Effect Andromeda… They want every studio to chip in development for a monolithic engine, they’re seeing it as an all-purpose asset.
    Even if it doesn’t work like that, of course, suits are all clueless.

  9. Because using a single general purpose game engine is cost-effective and makes it easier to make future iterations of games with.

    It’s also then possible to decouple the engine team from the game team so you get faster dev on the engine itself.
