Rumour: Battleborn may go free-to-play [UPDATE: Gearbox responds]

It appears that Gearbox’s hero shooter, Battleborn, may go free to play in the next couple of months. According to Kotaku’s sources, this F2P announcement will be made in mid-November, though this could very well change.

According to Kotaku, Gearbox wanted from the get-go to make Battleborn a F2P title, however 2K Games insisted to release it as a full priced title.

Battleborn flopped pretty hard, and it appears that Gearbox and 2K Games will try and repeat Evolve’s F2P success.

Evolve was another MP full priced game, published by 2K Games, that flopped. However by making it a F2P title, 2K Games and Turtle Rock Studios were able to significantly increase its playerbase. Our guess is that 2K Games will attempt the very same thing with Battleborn.

Naturally, take everything you read with a grain of salt as 2K Games has not commented yet on this rumour!

UPDATE:

Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford has responded to this rumour, claiming that it is false.

  1. I guess they’re going to differentiate between people who paid for it and people who get it as F2P. Like having the founders edition with it’s full campaign + all paid/premium items (which f2p players must buy with microtransactions or play a lot to get them).

  2. Battleborn a 2016 “AAA” release (Multiplayer Centric)
current players accd to steamcharts : 206

WarFrame 3yrs old F2P (Multiplayer Centric)
current players accd to steamcharts: 18,294

Yeah, they need to do something. But I trust Gearbox it’s not like they’ve ever lied to us about one of their games Aliens Colonial Marines

  3. “According to Kotaku’s sources”

There’s your problem. Infact, you shouldn’t even mention or link to Kotaku, ever. Unless you’re purposely trying to embarrass this site.

      1. I’m not a fan of the site, but your right about Schreier being right more often than not. I still remember the NoMan’sSky community issuing death threats when he reported on the delay. Wonder how they feel about all that now?

  4. Quick response which by the amount of lies we’re told by developers these days makes you think there’s something happening
