Respawn had to convince Lucasfilm in order to make Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is been out for a couple of months now, and so far most people seem to enjoy it. At least more than the recent movie trilogy. The game features an original story within the Star Wars universe during the Order 66 era. The era where Jedi are being hunted and destroyed under the orders of the Emperor.

“I pitched, ‘Hey what if we do a game about Jedi and Force powers?’ They were not super comfortable with that. They threw it back, ‘What about blasters or bounty hunters?'”

According to Stig Asmussen, game director of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Respawn had to convince Lucasfilm in order to make a game with Force users. He talked about the difficulties that came through dealing with Lucasfilm, who basically controls the whole Star Wars universe. He also mentioned that Lucasfilm is very protective of their universe and especially when it evolves around Jedi.

“That’s not the background of the team we’ve built; you might as well ask me and us to start building a racing game at this point. I don’t think anybody’s going to be really happy with the results of that.”

There were two Star Wars games in the works with a bounty hunting theme but both got cancelled. Star Wars 1313 was the first one and more recently the Project Ragtag from Visceral Games, which sadly no longer exists due to Electronics Arts.

“The Jedi is the Holy Grail. To make a game about Jedi you’ve got to earn it. There was a little bit of back and forth, but they could see where I was coming from and said, ‘All right, we can start having a conversation about making a game about Force users, but not Jedi.’ And then the game comes out and its name is Jedi.”

So it seems Respawn made the correct decision, even if bounty hunters are much more likeable right now in the Star Wars movie and TV universe. And that is most probably because of the hit TV series The Mandalorian.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is available now.

  1. there was also a prototype star wars space sim pitched to ea by the rebel galaxy devs. So what is lucas arts doing these days?

    1. It;s all disney bro. Disney is what you should be saying, they can’t do any thing without disney’s say.

  2. Lucasfilm manages to be dumber than EA.
They put a lot of limitations for game developers, but then hand the movies to JJ and Rian Roundhead.
I’m glad we got a Jedi game rather than a reskinned Uncharted.

  3. Misleading headline from Chris Kuntouras. They had to convince them to make it about the main protagonist being a JEDI, not to make the game. You’re fired.

  4. You need some þussy. Go get yourself some þussy. Otherwise you sound like a little ßitch sitting here crying about how everyone else has hurt you. You can act like a man.

    1. Sorry, I don’t speak incel.. also take the ?ock all the way out of your mouth when you talk to an adult. I know you can’t act like a man, but have some manners anyways ßitch.

  5. “I pitched, ‘Hey what if we do a game about Jedi and Force powers?’ They were not super comfortable with that.”

Yep, Kathleen Kennedy reserves such privileges for Rey Skywalker Palpatine and when turning the once-great Star Wars legacy of Carrie Fisher into a laughing stock.

    Star Wars 1977-2012 RIP.

  6. Most of that is likely exaggeration, but I do agree with one thing… when I was playing and first saw Deborah Wilson’s face again as a character… SMH… I was immediately bored. Just an uninteresting (and ugly) character (and therefore a fully UN-believable story arc for her). She was annoying af in Colossus, too. In fact, both of the people on your ship, her and the pilot, are just bad characters with lazy voice acting choices.

Don’t agree on the 2nd Sister. She was cool.

But it’s a good thing the gameplay and art direction was pretty awesome. Main reason I finished the game and ended up enjoying it.

  7. I actually enjoyed it. Loved the art direction and most of the level design. (One day we’ll get an open world SW game that gets that exploration + iconic architecture/scenery right. Yes, I’m talking Coruscant). Gameplay and force use was cool if not original. Getting 100% on each of the planets was fun.

Was fine with the main character and BD-1. Was actually well written stuff and felt genuine.

Didn’t like the 2 characters on your ship. Wilson? Really? Both just bad, lazy characters.

Hopefully this has enough success that they green light more triple A Star Wars games. All the negativity aside, and the agendas that some will say come along with it all, I honestly will never get tired of the lore & universe. It’s one of those IP’s you count on to keep you sane when things get bad.
