Now here is something that will please a lot of old-school FPS fans. Mike Voelle and Jason Mojica are currently working on a retro first-person shooter that will be using modern rendering techniques, called Prodeus.
Prodeus is the first person shooter of old, reimagined using modern rendering techniques that aims to reach the quality you expect from a AAA experience while adhering to some of the aesthetic technical limits of older hardware. In order to showcase this retro FPS, the duo has released a trailer that you can find below.
Prodeus will feature high quality 3D retro aesthetic, a focus on over the top visual effects, an amazing dismemberment system, infinite blood, fast-paced action, hellish destruction, a dynamic soundtrack, visceral and engaging combat scenarios, heavy duty weaponry and a multitude of secrets to discover.
The game is currently planned for a 2019 release and looks really cool, so be sure to watch the trailer!

While he is a die-hard PC gamer, his gaming roots can be found on consoles. John loved – and still does – the 16-bit consoles, and considers SNES to be one of the best consoles. Still, the PC platform won him over consoles. That was mainly due to 3DFX and its iconic dedicated 3D accelerator graphics card, Voodoo 2. Hmmmm…
Slight problem: It doesn’t look like an oldschool shooter at all, it looks like Doom 2016. I mean it looks exactly like Doom 2016. Enemies even spawn in with an teleport particle effect that looks like fire! The goddamn key cards in the HUD even look the same! If you wanted to write an actual article rather than a fluff piece you would acknowledge that we’re dealing with a blatant CLONE of Doom 2016, not some non-descript “retro” or “oldschool” game.
if only it was like doom 2016, this looks like a game boy advance fps like ice nine.
pretty interesting. a bit deceptive though. if you think about it, it’s running at half internal resolution and 1/3rd normal framerate. so this can already be achieved with current games. turning them retro.
so the major question is, how much is this? and will there be a way to run this at full internal resolution at 120 fps?
Looks too slow to be good.
FOV is also too narrow, like console-narrow.
This just looks like a 3D shooter rendered at 640×480.
That’ll be a “modern rendering technique” on Nintendo Switch!
Haha, I was gonna post EXACTLY this 🙂
more like 144p
480 is good but not this bad
The REAL Doom 3
So basically DOOM 2016?
With a whole lot of huge visible pixels.
This is what the next Sonic game should be like. This looks amazing.
I came to say it hit all the right notes.
I for one am looking forward to it.
But it looks like the majority of commenters are angry and so mad for various reasons. Like seriously, get a life.
This site is often just the Negativity Olympics with everyone seeing how much more negative they can be than the next guy.
It’s what they voted for.
The vote was silly idea though imo. It’s like asking a child what they want for dinner……candy or broccoli
I absolutely support free speech, and I support my ability to criticize others’ speech. 😉
” looks really cool”
Looks really blurry you mean. seriously why do people have a hard on for 320×400 is beyond me, ditch the pixelation and the metroid hud and show it to me again.
if you don’t like that aesthetic, the game isn’t aimed at you. there are plenty of us who do appreciate the styling
i agree with you about looking blurry but still i prefer it to most games that trash developers shet out left and right. it does look cool though.
I agree!
One can make an “old-school” fast paced shooting with old-school level-design and fast-paced gameplay! No need for the pixelation…unless its being made using a game engine from the 90’s like the Quake(idtech 1) or Build engine.
i’ll keep my eye on this one, it’s blurry but it’s better than replaying old games over and over for the past 2 to 3 years.
This will be a day one purchase.
I thought the video was playing back at 360p.
runnin’ and gunnin’
So what is the ultra res? this looks like 144p upscale to 4k.
Now I want Hi-res texture and MSAAx8 Antti-Alliesing x16.
retro 2d style never work in 3d cuz they just look low quality .
I’ll keep an eye on this as it looks dope
Aim down sights+Bullet Spread …. oldschool my 4$$
Why is it so pixellated? I’d rather play a DOOM wad instead than watch all these blurry jaggies.
me too, now we have Ion Maiden and PROJECT WARLOCK and now we are waiting for Prodeus and … DUSK
@John Brock tx for the suggestion about PW
now it’s on Steam so I can grab it http://bit.ly/2rmTfwh 🙂
