Phil Spencer Claims That Windows 10 Is The Best Operating System Ever Created For Gamers On PC

On January 21st, Xbox boss Phil Spencer will talk about the new operating system that Microsoft is currently working on. According to Spencer, Windows 10 is the best operating system ever created for gamers on the PC, and hinted towards some really interesting – gaming-related – announcements.

As Phil Spencer said:

“For the Xbox team, this is the beginning of our discussion with fans about the work that we’re doing to bring gaming to the Windows 10 operating system. It’s really nice to finally get to be able to talk about this. We’ll continue the conversation throughout the year.”

Whether this means that Microsoft will bring some Xbox One exclusive games to the PC remains a mystery. After all, we’ve heard those claims and before, so we strongly suggest keeping your expectations low.

So far, we know that DX12 is coming to Windows 10. It’s pretty much unclear yet whether this new API will be fully supported by Windows 7 and Windows 8, so here is hoping that MS won’t screw things up.

There have also been various rumors about Xbox One games coming to the PC. Not only that, but a tech demo of Forza was showcased running on DX12 a while back.

Enjoy and stay tuned for more!

        1. Why not? Just because they neglected PC in the past does not mean they will neglect us now, especially if they want to sell Windows 10 to us.

          Also, most of the PC Gamers are perfectly happy using their Windows 7 x64 for years to come. Having DirectX12 and AAA Xbox games on Windows 10 exclusively is the logical solution to get PC Gamers to upgrade to Windows 10.

          1. oh please dude they want you to jump at Xbone as fast as possible they don’t want to see you playing on Windows. Their whole E3 show was solely made for Xbone.

          2. Your optimism is beyond flattering .If m$ is really going to be the ‘game changer’ this time then it would have been appropriate to release an exclusive title only for PC but no they have nothing to show to you.

          3. The Windows 10 event has not happened yet, you just might get your wish. Wait till January 21st, 2015 then hate Microsoft afterwards if nothing significant happens.

          4. Oh absolutely… lol gating content for us should make us happy to buy their crap. haha. You sir, are jester of immeasurable talent.

        2. Lat time I checked, most games were on Windows, so Microsoft can say “Windows” and “gaming” together as often as they damn please, even if they don’t support it with their own games much.

          1. oh really, then tell me where is windows live today ? 2) Not even one game sponsored by M$ or designed by M$ “…but will you please jump to XBone we at M$ would really love that…”. Where is dx12 ? Mantle is already here but why wasn’t M$ earlier in producing Dx12 .Last but not least they will use dx12 as a selling point but no no no no they don’t want to release dx12 for win7 users. BTW win10 looks like a complete clone of win8.1. So what ever floats your boat.

          2. Did you understand my comment completely? I said that Microsoft can talk about Windows and gaming together because PC gaming mainly happens on Windows. I also said Microsoft doesn’t support PC gaming on Windows that much with their own products. Do you understand now?

      1. No we wouldn’t have, things were going fine with OpenGL until Microsoft convinced developers DX is best for a Windows only world and for 20 years that has been true but it’s not any more.

        DirectX hasn’t really done anything OpenGL and the other graphics API didnt’ do, in fact it was thanks to S3 that they got the texture compression tech from that DirectX can even do texture compression, OpenGL already had S3TC extensions, Microsoft brought it from S3.

        1. OpenGL works on Windows too, so developers would’ve probably switched to OpenGL/AL/CL if DirectX didn’t exist, but it’d still be pretty much a Windows-only affair.

          1. They were using OpenGL anyway ,they don’t really care what API they use, DirectX is more than just a graphics API, that’s why they switched.

          2. Yes, that’s why it had the head start in game development… graphics, input, sound all in one convenient package; unlike what the Khronos Group had been offering till recently.

          3. Right but like I said, Direct3D didn’t do anything revolutionary in terms of features, it was S3 who was doing that and that revolution was texture compression, now called DXTC in Direct3D, formally S3TC.

          4. DirectX merely made game development more friendly for everyone. The so-called “revolutionary” tech behind DirectX (specifically Direct3D) was conceived with RenderMorphics’ Reality Lab much earlier. Microsoft just hired the lead developer of that API and commercialized the tech on a larger scale, that’s all.

          5. It’s what monopolies do, it’s what Microsoft do to any competition. S3 paved the way while Microsoft layed the foundations for their monopolistic OS and software.

          6. All businesses want to maximize their presence. I’m pretty sure if Apple Inc. or IBM had been at the helm of things instead of Microsoft, it wouldn’t have been much different from the consumer’s perspective. All that ultimately matters is who’s got the more lucrative and sustainable product, regardless of means.

          1. Or like Yahtzee said: “(…) felt like leaving a child of my own in a Jonestown daycare center.”

        1. Worse – they turned Age of Empires and Flight Simulator into F2Ps. They even dissolved Ensemble, the maker of Age of Empires, just as they were about to release Halo Wars.

          They branched off Mech Warrior for the XBox and then dissolved the whole franchise, including the PC version, when it didn’t sell well. We don’t even see MS associating themselves with the PC versions of their games unless it’s a F2P or has micro-transanctions that can boost it’s tablet market.

      2. Windows and DirectX are great for PC gaming and thank MS for that. Unfortunately, those contributions were overshadowed by the Xbox. MS actually left PC gaming floundering around during the age of the PS3 and 360.

        MS, with it’s industry standard Windows and DirectX, was the one that should bring in the new age of PC gaming but it was not. It was a small game dev that made one or two games that released a digital distribution platform which made the PC great again. Valve and Steam was hailed as the saviour of PC gaming while MS was the one that left it flapping around for years.

      3. Yes, and it was a decade ago… Now M$ actually don’t give a sh.t about PC gamers. They closed all great studios that made games for them including Ensemble, Flight Simulator series makers, Digital Anvil (thank you for destroying Freelancer universe, microsoft), FASA (no more MechWarrior), no more original games like Black and White – only gayish Fable series left… Not to mention Rallysport Challenge and Midtown Madness. All gone. I loved old Microsoft long time ago, but not now, sorry.

      4. Age of Empires, Rise of Nations, Flight Simulator are great but Microsoft disbanded and close the studios when they couldn’t make Xbox games.

      5. MS was interested in supporting games on the PC before they released the Xbox. While Xbox consoles are being sold, the PC (for gaming) will ALWAYS come second for MS, and that is pretty obvious (and unfortunate).

      6. The thing is Windows is actually bad for PC gamers. Before you downvote me, hear me out.

        Microsoft has shown that ever since they released the Xbox that they simply don’t care about PC gamers and that their focus is on the Xbox Platform. Windows is such a bloated operating system that uses a lot of system resources just to run. Sure a fresh install of Windows is great but even if the end user doesn’t install much software Windows gets bogged down by it’s own runtimes and updates. Hell Windows 7 Pro requires 80GB of storage just to install.

        Here is why Windows is so widely used and supported:
        It is shipped on almost all prebuilt systems

        Because of my first bullet it is the most widely supported OS by Devs
        Windows has been around for awhile and people stick to what they know

        Linux is the better choice of OS and here’s why:
        Most Linux Distros only require 4GB for the Operating System

        Linux doesn’t waste a lot of your system resources just to run, leaving more to allocate for games

        (Most) Linux Distros are free so you don’t have to pay $100 premium to Microsoft

        It is open source so there is a large pool of developers to update the Kernel

        There are some major cons to Linux though:
        Because Windows is installed on nearly all prebuilts, Linux is only used by 1.5% of desktop users as opposed to 54% of server users and over 76% of super computers

        Since there is such a small install base for Linux, the Library of Linux games is still rather small, but growing.

        Hardware manufacturers don’t offer a lot of support when it comes to updates and leaves it entirely up to the Linux community although that has changed since Valve announced the development of Steam OS.

        By using Windows we are supporting a company that does not care about us.

        Edit: Sorry I tried to make a bulleted list, but it looks like Disqus doesn’t support the tag.

    1. I don’t even want them to come back to the PC anymore, & I used to be a big, long-time advocate for seeing Halo return to the PC.

      Then I heard about how horrible 343’s Master Chief Collection really is, & about how Halo 5 is being “CoD-ified”, now I just hope Windows 10 doesn’t suck as much as Windows 8, so I can actually convince myself to give up Aero in favour of Ribbon UIs & flat dull 90’s colours.

  1. I would love Microsoft stays away from PC gaming. I dont want another GFWLv2.0. Devs/Publishers are removing their sh!ts from existing games. And they are looking to create more sh!ts?

  2. They’re trying to court PC gamers to buy Windows 10 without giving a genuine incentive. Microsoft wants their cake and to eat it, too. They won’t give PC gamers X1 games, but still want our money. Until they make some serious announcements it’s all just bullshit.

        1. The dispute was over replacing the Start Menu with the Start screen (and not giving users a choice between the two).

          The Start screen is faster, more efficient, and — in the hands of the right user, Sig — much more aesthetically pleasing than the Start Menu could ever be.

          The Desktop and Taskbar (especially using a keyboard shortcut) will always be fastest for someone in Desktop mode.

    1. I hated windows 8 so windows 10 looks like a step back to 7 with all the slight improvements of 8, but without its horrid inefficient interface.

  3. Every time I hear the word “Xbox” during the show, I’m gonna take a shot of one of my favorite beverages.
    Anyone with me? I wonder how fast I’ll get drunk.

    Probably fast. MS will try to push the stupid Xbox brand on PC gamers. I guarantee it.

    Microsoft is a joke! PC Gaming doesn’t want you anymore. Deal with it.

  5. “Pre order now for 99,99 because we ‘love’ gamers”…Then the OS comes out and at first start you get a wonderful blue screen of death…lol

    Gotta love marketing policies around the globe lately, “hyping” the crap out of things and then giving crappy quality content.

    But hey…we’ll just have to wait and see.

  6. my list:

    1. new DRM called GFWL2 and it’s worst than the 1st one. always connected, always broken.
    2. play x1 games on PC in cloud, which makes then more unplayable than they already are.
    3. xbox so called backward compatibility even more broken than PSNow +more input lag.
    4. even more broken and limited version of the windows store.
    5. new ways to kill pc market.
    6. and oh, here is a suprise for you, your GPUs are not compatible with DX12.
    7. DX 12 is exclusive to win 10.
    8. here another xbone exclusive for you to forget all negative things about the event.

    1. Don’t even get me started about XBox controller for Windows, Microsoft made DirectX plug and play, then they f*cked it up by letting devs port their XBox360 only code to PC and lock out other controllers that used to work natively with any game until console ports came along.

      GTA IV did it for me, my controller didn’t even work so I had to buy a XBox360 one since my wife played it a lot. Xbox360 controller pretty much have killed any other PC controllers on the market thanks to forcing you to buy one for their console ports.

      Microsoft can take their XBox brand on the PC have shove it where the Sun don’t shine.

        1. You shouldn’t need a driver in that sense, DirectX configures it and it sees any controller you plug in, then your game does, that’s the beauty of DirectX.

          Ultimately if Windows sees your controller, any game will.

      1. I’ve been using two Logitech Cordless Rumblepad 2s. They’ve worked great for every game I’ve tried them in using just the default drivers in Windows 8.1. When a game has supported only Xbox controllers, the Xbox 360 Controller Emulator has taken care of that.

        I recently had some trouble getting the x360ce software to work in Need for Speed Rivals. The game runs a 64-bit executable, and this is what it took to get the controller to work:

        1. Install the Logitech gaming software (no rumble without it).
        2. Copy x360ce.exe to the folder containing the game executable and run it.
        3. Extract the x360ce lib64 files (a separate download) and copy dinput8.dll and xinput1_3.dll to the game folder.
        4. Rename xinput1_3.dll to xinput9_1_0.dll.
        5. Edit x360ce.ini:
        [Options]
        Version=1

        [InputHook]
        HookLL=0
        HookCOM=1
        HookSA=0
        HookWT=0
        HookDI=1
        HookPIDVID=1
        HookName=1

        The game feels as good as it does on the PS4. Better, really, when you consider the much better graphics and framerate. (The only place in which the PS4 wins is the triggers on the DualShock 4; the Rumblepad 2s buttons don’t have that same, gradual pull.)

        The emulation software works so well that I have no desire to replace the Rumblepad 2s with an Xbox controller, but I may buy a DualShock 4 and run it with DS4 emulation software just because those triggers feel so good.

        1. Yep, i have Joy from PSX2 (Legendary Dual Shock 2) I have this Joy 12 Years now 😀 And its still great. Im using x360ce for every game that utilize xBone Joy (shitty IMO) and all games x32 x64 working great.
          All files on my cloud -> http://loccothan.blogspot.com/ -> here are the MOD links

      2. I’ve been using a logitech f710 with windows 7and besides being significantly better then the 360 controller, it works with every single game i’ve tried it with. Including gta 4 (although i found it easier to play with KB+M) All games that only support the 360 work with this controller with no additional software.

    2. This new claims by Phil Spencer is just the usual pandering they make every time they want to promote a new OS. I highly doubt it that there will be many great PC games or even ports of AAA titles for Win10. Most of them would be ports of tablet games from MS mobiles. Let’s not forget that another key feature of DX12 is mobile gaming.

      As for cloud gaming…no, thanks. Downloading the regular way is hard enough so having a whole library of games that can only be access via online streaming would be a nightmare for me.

  7. I heard the word xbox 100 times over and pc only twice.

    Let me tell you how this is gonna play out.

    “LOOK GUYS DX12”

    WOW

    “EXLUSIVE TO WINDOWS 10”

    Then they gonna be like

    “SUNSET OVERDRIVE ON PC BECAUSE ITS NOT SELLING SHT ON XBONE”

    and we will be like “yeah we could smell that coming from a mile away”

    and ms will be like

    “DX12 EXLUSIVE, BUY WINDOWS 10”

    and then we be like

    FUUUUU MS

    You know what will be funny? making a deal with rockstar to make gta v dx12 only, that will completly kill off the game sales.

  8. Its purely marketing like microsoft never update the native support USB 3.0 on Windows 7. so people need to use newer OS, and this one people need DirectX 12 but gess, Windows 8.1 only support till 12.0 and Windows 10 will get 12.1 and 12.2 like old times.

  9. This! This list right here! Basically a decade long of candy-coated bullshit and failure on behalf of M$. I really hope some gaming journo with balls asks him about this at the conference. Would love to see his reaction.

  10. What a sack of sht is Phil Spencer. I expect real facts not just this PR crap MS is saying for years. So far they havent showed anything and DX12 is here thanks to Mantle hype.

    MS you dirty rats!

  11. For Now (to date) The Best for Us Gamers is Win 8.1 DX11.3
    And i now that for sure 😀 Cuz im gaming a lot (with Decent OC) 8-12h a day.
    No freezes, hangs, all is smooth and reliable. I Love Win 8.1 MCE.
    And im using Valid Win 8.1 with Media Center add On. (MCE was for free from MS 😉
    And no, im not using Start at all 😉 Its cool anyway. Greets Bros

  12. The only Xbox games that I really wanted on PC are Sunset Overdrive, and the yet to be released Scalebound. Maybe Forza Horizon 2, I really enjoy arcade racers.
