Blizzard has announced that its team-based shooter, Overwatch, has surpassed 20 million players. In addition, Blizzard launched the Halloween seasonal event for Overwatch.
As Blizzard claimed in a press release:
“We also want to share the news that Overwatch has crossed a new milestone—20 million players—making this special holiday treat all the sweeter.”
Regarding the Halloween event, players can explore – from now until November 1st – the haunted streets of Hollywood, expand their collection of themed holiday items, and relive a chilling tale in our first-ever PvE brawl: Junkenstein’s Revenge.
Enjoy!

Great game. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/b1770fd686fd6fd2bd4d86547a172429c9278182f58ac4fea94f40f2f406ba27.png
Careful, you’ll offend someone (read: SJW) with such a seductive pose, then Blizzard will feel compelled to take it down & replace it with a “politically correct” version instead.
Because, yeah…… >.>
Too late, they’re already offended, though they’re getting triggered by Symmetra’s vampire skin because she’s too pale and apparently that’s horrible racism and whitewashing or something.
Kreygasm
Now if only the game weren’t so damn boring. I guess it could be entertaining if it’s your first shooter or if you like TF2.
Not all that boring for me and my mates tbh. I find BF4, CoD and other shooters to be more boring these days. DOOM’s SP was fun for a single romp, the MP was designed for console gamers and not me so that went out the window.
Played TF2 for years and I’ve been bored with that game for years, so having Overwatch feels like something fun to play with than just gritty shooters these days.
It’s also a subjective matter, so what you find entertaining could be boring as hell for me.
NO IT’S BORING AND YOU, YOUR MATES AND 20 MILLION OTHER PEOPLE ARE WRONG!
20 million sycophants & counting, I see.
No really, it’s nice to see the Blizzard Sycophant Club is still in session.
Let’s see how many more they can snag with BlizzCon this year, eh?
Would try if I had gamer friends.
Does that mean 20 million sales? Or can you have multiple player profiles under 1 game?
Either way, they’ve managed to do it again. Out of all things I would have expected from Blizz,, a team based fps wasn’t one of them. They aren’t a high release volume dev but what they do put out always seems to be a huge hit…
well except maybe Rock and Roll Racing haha.
People from B-lizard clearly know their business and the general consumer psychology very well. Those rich bastards, I’m envious right now…
Too bad I like my ultra violent FPS a bit more gritty, wasn’t really able to get into TF 2 and similar shooters looking like colourful cartoons for children.
A perfect example of how poeple likes sh ! tt y rip off games nowadays, LOL, the worst thing is that gamers ask devs for original ideas when this blatant copy of TF2 is the most popular game now.
I would love to see what “AMAZING GAMES” you play. Overwatch is much more polished than TF2 in every way and the Devs actually listen to the community and communicate. I have never seen Valve do anything of the sort in TF2, CSGO, or HL.
Yeah, but that’s half the problem. Blizzard doesn’t do original, they just take something existing, refine it, & milk it to death for the next 15 years.
Take World of Warcraft; it used to be a merger of Diablo 2, LineAge, & EverQuest’s best features. Today, it’s a giant cesspool of sh*t. The developers have lost all vision, the classes have become ridiculous, the gameplay has been defiled, etc. etc. etc.
And they’re going to end up doing the exact same thing to Overwatch, just as they did to Diablo.
I honestly don’t see what is wrong with that. You are saying Blizzard is amazing at perfecting other people’s ideas. That is how “all” successful companies work.
Once a company reaches a certain size it becomes “Immobile” mostly due to “Red Tape”. In order to stay successful the company looks at currently profitable sectors they are related to but not involved with. Think Microsoft Surface or even Zune(lol). Then they merge their ecosystem with the new sector.
As for the cesspool comment. That’s opinion, which is fine. But if you look at data, WoW is currently more accessible to more players than ever. But it takes time to fix certain things and in that same time frame things become stale.
No I’m saying that’s what they do at first, then they defile the original idea in favour of monetising it as much as possible, betraying their community, the people who helped build the IP in the first place in favour MONEY, MONEY, MONEEEEEEEY!
They stop being an effective development force that keeps improving things positively, the ideas dry up, so they start making one wrong decision after the other (even worse, in Diablo’s case, they fixed everything, then they just got flat-out lazy & purposefully broke things again), but no matter how much feedback we provide them with indicating that something is just plain f*cking WRONG, 99% of the time as far as they’re concerned, they know what’s best for us, “so shut up & take it already.”
Yes, WoW is more accessible, at the cost of more than 5 million subscribers, lost over the course of 12 months. Nice payoff, huh? Or, alternatively, 7 million lost over the course of…. 2 years? 3? I forget, but yeah; massive losses in recent times, as a result of Blizzard’s development choices.
Also, Microsoft doesn’t really “succeed”, they just throw massive amounts of money at things until something sticks to the wall. The Xbox, for example. Everything else? Vista, Windows 8, Surface 1, the Zune, etc. were all giant fails that only got anywhere in the first place because Microsoft was throwing considerable sums behind each one, instead of investing them into actually improving the f*cking thing in the first place.
Dunno how much that even matters these days, considering the company that made TF2, hardly makes games these days and is far more happy to sell you skins and let the store flood with crap, with you having to vote and sift through the crap to find those little nuggets.
Lol hate just to hate……If you want to hate talk about Paladins or even the Chinese Rip off of Overwatch that literally uses the same maps and characters with different names…..It might not be 100% original but guess what………………………
SIMPSONS DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SIMPSONS DIT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
lol
I wish they had a breakdown, for which platform had how many players the way Battlefront and other EA games have.
Blizzard cares about you for 10 seconds. Once they get your money, it’s only a matter time before they f*ck you over.
Do they provide better long-term support, post-launch patching, etc? Mostly, sure. Then again, it’s only because they’ve figured out the time-old “secret” of “post-launch support = continued income.”
Once they establish the solid foundations for an IP, it’s only a matter of time before they start destroying it. I saw it with World of Warcraft, Diablo, & even Starcraft to a degree. Overwatch started off as “Team Overwatch 3” basically, yeah? Well, in a few years, it won’t even be worthy of being called “Team Overwatch 2” anymore, but the sycophants will always be ready to stand up & shout-match defend it, “because Blizzard does this, or Blizzard does that, or bla bla bla, bla bla bla.”
Diablo 3 is a f*cking joke, but the only portion of the Community that cares are the Diablo 2 veterans who got sucked into the game after v2.0 “fixed” everything that was wrong with v1.0. All the new fans? The kiddies who came in now? They’re still playing that piece of sh*t, just as they’re going to buy & play the next one.
World of Warcraft is even worse. The classes have no sense of identity, the development process has gone to sh*t in favour of their time-old “ANNUAL EXPANSION PACKS!” delusions that they still insist on chasing, no matter how much damage it does to WoW itself (see Warlords of Draenor controversy). There haven’t been actually original Boss fights in f*cking years (with maybe 1-2 exceptions throughout an entire Expansion), & Legion (latest Expansion) is, as is basically Blizzard’s customary style by this point, a combination of honestly, failed ideas melded together into one big pot that somehow formed something vaguely playable, this time around.
As usual, they promised one thing, delivered something else, but the moment you try to make a point of it anywhere, the Sycophants will immediately rise up to start shouting you down into oblivion, because in their eyes – BLIZZARD DO NO WRONG!
Getting latched onto the Blizzard teat is literally one of the worst things ever, especially because their Blizzard Sycophant Club ardently defends them so badly. You think EA is bad? Activision? Ubisoft? Microsoft? Bethesda have turned into a bunch of idiots? At least people know who they are, they’ve heard stories, they know, & at leas a portion of them recognise Fallout 4 for the EPIC FAIL that it really is. Blizzard? All you hear is “oh, yeah, Diablo 3 launch – but it’s okay, they fixed that!” >.> Yeah, then they broke it again, but nobody mentions THAT bit.
Seriously, fair warning, this is how Blizzard does most of its post-launch support (I call it “change, for the sake of change”);
“Before the change:
90% of people don’t care
10% of people are happy to [insert]
After the change:
90% of people don’t care
10% of people are pissed off
Net result: great success.
Well spent development time.”
“Blizzard cares about you for 10 seconds. Sure, & technically that’s about 9 seconds longer than the other majors, but the same ideology applies to them in the end, regardless, if not even more so in Blizzard’s case; once they get your money, it’s only a matter time before they f*ck you over.”
Yeah we can say this for almost anyone because at some point, someone gets enough dosh to want to bend you over the barrel, we’ve seen this countless times with beloved devs and studios over the years, CDPR will definitely fall prey to this thanks to the “couldn’t happen with consoles” money.
“Do they provide better long-term support, post-launch patching, etc? Mostly, sure. Then again, it’s only because they’ve figured out the time-old “secret” of “post-launch support = continued income.”
Most games should, that should be the default business model of continued support. If you don’t, your game just shrivels up and dies, especially if it’s a few hrs romp with nothing to show for it like big gems have over the decades,
“Once they establish the solid foundations for an IP, it’s only a matter of time before they start destroying it. I saw it with World of Warcraft, Diablo, & even Starcraft to a degree. Tbh I’ve also seen this happen across the board with other devs and pubs, including Valve and the whole shit with CSGO and TF2, no one is holy enough to be exempt from the example.
See the two big issues I mainly have with Blizz and their obvious model, is that they shove RNG up the arse into every game of theirs as well as little things that require way more time to grind for than their initial value. That’s what pisses me off, but what pisses me off more are seeing a large load of AAA titles coming out half baked, costing more and slicing up content into tiny pieces to be sold off as £40 DLC or season passes, while also being loaded with micro or macro trans if you’re Ubisoft.
At least with a Blizz game, for the most part, I get polish on day one. I got polish with SC II throughout the expansions (yes their exp model did suck, but none of us voted to do shit and voting with your wallet is never a direct and clear message let alone worthy of working half the time), and yet with games like Dying Light I get screwy performance, CA effect shoved everywhere (same with quite a few games these days now) and downgrades like with Witcher 3 (which somehow gets excused because teh console money somehow made all things possible).
I get where you’re coming from. But I don’t see Blizz being an exact 100% to the note same duplicate as MS and Ubisoft/EA. All those 3 fucked over PC gaming for years and years and still do. Blizz has at least a few titles just on PC, while MS base their PC versions on Xbox and come up with excuses to hide the fact that they have to make it work on X1 first and PC later rather than the other way around,. Valve, well nothing more needs to be said about those guys, it’s no mystery as to what they do these days and I find it rather sad the way they operate and remain complacent.
I have no allegiance to a single company, but I can say that I’ve recently been going with Blizz due to their games still enticing me, still aiming and working for me, the other AAA games this year have either worked like shite or failed on delivery, save for DOOM, but even then half that game told me to fuck off unless I was a console gamer.
Who knows, Shadow Warrior 2 might be a really good AAA experience this year, but I expect those devs in time to fill in amongst the ranks with time, they all end up that way sooner or later.
“Getting latched onto the Blizzard teat is literally one of the worst things ever, especially because their Blizzard Sycophant Club ardently defends them so badly. You think EA is bad? Activision? I dunno, that’s going a bit far in terms of making it okay to go all out on someone because they happen to buy from another. If you buy from someone I think is scum, it would give me the right to go all out on you and then some, but if you didn’t agree, you’d fall into your own pitfall you set up with what you wrote above.
I know the flaws of Blizzard and their games. I know the massive flaws that the others have as well, but at the end of the day I love SCII, I love Diablo, I love WoW, I love Heroes and Overwatch.
I used to love TF2, L4D, I had good times with those, but times have passed and Valve hasn’t done much with those today except the desire to milk them as they are.
EA, they want that sweet season pass and Origin money.
Ubisoft has now shifted to copying what EA does from trying to copy Valve. We have two monkeys trying to emulate an Ape, that is bullshit in my book, those two should have evolved a decade ago but didn’t until recent years.
GoG for the most part is fine, though they lack Steam’s library and getting every single AAA game they could (or should) land their hands on.
MS with their god forsaken attempt at GFWL 2.0 is enough of a signal to know that they want to lock you in their garden OS, store and all forever. Fuck that noise to the depths of hell, never to return.
– Agreed. Actually, CDPR’s already fallen to the console money (lighting controversy). Now it’s really just a question of how much respect they pay the PC with 2077. Are we going to get consolised UI menu’s & controller-blocked gameplay, from yet another once-upon-a-time glorious PC developer, or what? Time will tell.
– They “should” yeah, but current AAA Publisher mindset is “everything sold in the first week matters, everything after that, f*ck it.” As a result, post-launch support is basically an inconvenience. Best thing anyone can do for EA right now in their eyes is buy BF1, buy Premium, & then never waste a single second online, taking up their precious f*cking bandwidth, & complaining about how broken BF1 is at launch because EA rushed it, AGAIN.
– Agreed again; nobody should be exempt. Problem is, due to the various degrees of sh*t &/or sycophantism they’ve gathered up over the years, each publisher is regarded differently. Bethesda, for example. People still blindly praise Skyrim, think Fallout 3 is the greatest thing since cocaine, etc. Objections are overwhelmingly isolated to Fallout 4, exclusively. Blizzard is the same. EA on the other hand, gets the hype & the controversy trains both going every single f*cking time, right from the get-go. Activision, Ubisoft, etc. as well.
Blizzard? You might as well be announcing Minecraft 2, because the response will be the same – “OVERWHELMING F*CKING HYPE, MUTHAF*CKAS!!!!”
– Blizzard & RNG….. is basically a book of its own, so I won’t get into it. Suffice to say, once again, agreed. F*cking nightmare, in every game.
– Most of Blizzard’s launches are great, yeah, but not all of them. I do agree that it’s nice they still do full-size expansion packs over DLC packs, but that hasn’t stopped them from introducing micro-transactions into WoW (Mount & Pet Store – granted, they’re only cosmetic, but that’s because they know the massive wall of outrage they’d face if they went Pay to Win), & of course, let’s not forget the ULTIMATE micro-transaction model; CASH FOR LEGENDARIES! (Diablo 3 Auction House). No, seriously, you could buy a full set of Legendaries off the Auction House if you were willing to spend enough money.
– Agree on the rushed release thing, etc. Blizzard does take their time, problem is, it’s not because they want to do things right, it’s mainly just because they’re too incompetent to do it in a timely fashion. WoW is constantly plagued with delays because of massive internal screw-ups, Diablo 3 was recycled for years before they finally got that IDIOT who was formerly in charge of it to slap something together, which eventually became Diablo 3 1.0, etc. etc. etc.
Did you know Overwatch used to be a Sci-Fi MMO? It was supposed to be the next WoW, except they realised in time how moronic that was, so in order to recoup their GIANT losses, they slapped together a TF2 Clone instead. Yes, they do decent visuals & performance, etc. yes, but that’s largely because they never really push visuals. Most of their tech is old, antiquated. They don’t do cutting-edge. EVER.
Heroes of the Storm used to be called Blizzard DOTA. It was going to be a DOTA, until that project failed, hilariously, so instead they recycled it into Heroes of the Storm to recoup their losses, & DOTA isn’t even an original creation of theirs, as it originates from a Warcraft 3 Mod. Regardless, separate thing, &, sure, others have done this as well, to be fair, but yeah.
– Blizzard has titles they can’t port to consoles exclusive to PC, there’s a difference. Warcraft doesn’t work on controllers, as there’s, even today, too many buttons to press. Starcraft, likewise. it predates Microsoft’s little Halo Wars venture, & even if it didn’t, it would have to be consolized in order to work on controllers. They might try it with Starcraft 3, but other than that, too much trouble/not worth it/whatever.
Diablo 3 was consolised, on the other hand, because they could. I agree on Valve as well, it is a shame, but hey, it is what it is. Yeah, 2016 has been really disappointing, hasn’t it. The only two games worthwhile so far IMO (Hitman & Mankind Divided) got assraped by Square Enix, though yeah, Shadow Warrior 2 & Dishonored 2 do look interesting. Hopefully they won’t disappoint.
– You ever seen a MineCon compilation video? CrowbCat’s done a couple, for example. Basically, the Blizzard Sycophants Club is just as bad as those morons, if not even worse, at times. Every time you try to bring something up that makes Blizzard look bad, or if you complain about some class-specific feature, the Blizzard Apologists Union starts crashing down upon you immediately, & we’re talking about seriously die-hard people. “Blind faith” doesn’t even begin to describe how extremist they can become in their devotion to the Blizzard regime.
– Agreed on Valve (again), & I also still love & play historic Warcraft, Diablo, etc, but it doesn’t change the fact that historic Blizzard, the great behemoth that continuously shook the industry is now long dead & buried.
– Ubisoft generates an overwhelming amount of trash, I agree, but to be fair, unlike EA & Activision, they at least generate one good title every once in a while. Siege is an excellent FPS with serious potential, if only they’d launched it in a better state, & they realised they had to take a break with A$$ Crack lest they completely drive the IP into the ground. EA is going the Microsoft route – defiling IP’s & then continuing to defile them even after their original expiration date. Andromeda is going to be a f*cking joke, BioWare is a f*cking joke, DICE is a f*cking joke, etc. If it weren’t for their annual Sports franchises, they wouldn’t even be so hard in the green. Seriously, those things…. ugh.
Ubisoft, I’m waiting to see what they’re planning to do next. Square Enix, f*ck I have no idea. Hitman is still an episodic, & they seem to want to continue that model, but Mankind Divided may have forced them to rethink that, I suppose. EA is just waiting for a crash, & Activision is basically just going on Blizzard’s crap & Call of Duty right now.
– GoG will never reach Steam’s level until psychopaths like EA drop their manic desires for Denuvo-style DRM. Not to mention how EA still insists on holding all their titles hostage for Origin exclusivity, & Ubisoft still uses the uPlay DRM for their titles.
Microsoft will soon enough once again choke on its hilarious ego & fall back to lick its wounds, before it returns with some other moronic strategy, as always.
Some people never learn, after all.
I love most FPS’s, but for some reason I have zero interest in this game.
Aaand still no proper 21:9 support.
