Oddworld Soulstorm-3

Oddworld: Soulstorm and Magic: The Gathering Arena are now Epic Games Store exclusives

Epic Games has announced that Oddworld: Soulstorm and Magic: The Gathering Arena will release exclusively on the Epic Games Store. Magic: The Gathering Arena will release this Fall, whereas the new Oddworld game targets a 2020 release.

Oddworld Inhabitants has also issued a statement about the Epic Games Store exclusivity deal. According to the statement, the team is self-funding the game and needed additional financial assistance. As such, the Epic Games Store deal made a lot of sense to them as it can now focus on creating the game.

This is a really honest statement. To Oddworld Inhabitants’ credit, Lorne did not try to make the Epic Games Store sound cool or great. Moreover, the team avoided all the mistakes that Glumberland made earlier this month.

So yeah, it kind of sucks that Oddworld: Soulstorm will release exclusively on the Epic Games Store, however the team needed the extra cash to create the game. And since this is an indie team we’re talking about, we can fully understand and appreciate its decision.

Epic Games has also released a new trailer that showcases all of its games that will be coming out shortly!

  1. agree and disagree. people can do what they want with their money.
every single feature can be reproduced in the epic launcher.

I don’t really care what epic does with their money. Sony buys out exclusives too.
and just bought out Insomniac games. so no more sunset overdrive for steam either.

      1. Exactly! We see these devs publicly boasting that they no longer need the money from loyal Patreon supporters, Kickstarter backers, etc, because Tencent Sweeney has paid them upfront regardless of how well or otherwise their game sells.

        1. I for one, cannot wait to see the long-term ramifications for their stance on crapping on consumers. Hopefully the new gen of gamers we’re seeing now, will remember this, but seeing as how forgiving they are, I doubt it.

          1. The devs in question would do well to remember the maxim ‘You reap what you sow’ because,

            – Epic/Tencent won’t be willing to keep on backing indie devs to this same extent forever

            – devs whose first EGS-backed game sells poorly may be in for a rude awakening when seeking the same degree of backing for their next game

Such devs will be in for an interesting reception from PC gamers when Timmy Tencent turns them away and they’re forced to eat humble pie by subsequently reappearing on Steam to sell their next game.

          2. I think this one time cash-flow injection is the one horse they are betting on, because if it pans out, it would mean their next game could easily be funded, but seeing as how most of these devs are really, really poor with their budgeting (hence taking the EGS money in the first place exactly proves this), I don’t see their next projects working out so well, without needing another injection.

I guarantee you that some of the snidy devs will know what hole they’ve dug themselves into, and will likely seek a publisher deal, rather than ever going back to fig/patreon/KS.

I honestly hope some of those games tank, because I want them to learn how reality works, and that they cannot get away with “your money doesn’t matter to me”, and get rewarded for saying such.

Something tells me that most of these devs won’t be writing a letter of apology to Steam users a year later, let alone if their game tanks and they have to come crawling back. That and I’m betting some of these devs will boast about their EGS sales numbers, while completely disregarding Steam/GoG sales, that have yet to come.

The ones that hold onto that ego, a year later, and then boast about year old EGS numbers compared to Steam/GoG, those are the devs I will be waiting to put on the perma block list.

          3. Great comment. Especially enjoyed “they cannot get away with “your money doesn’t matter to me”, and get rewarded for saying such.”

Much the same as with #getwokegobroke the reality of free market capitalism will eventually catch up with these cretins.

      2. Haha, the rise of piracy is all because of epic. I hope they mention this in the next oped about Piracy.

        1. I’ll be amusing to see their next GDC, where they try to pull a Gaben and explain why piracy is rising, but instead of being smart about it, they’ll just find a way to blame consumers and Valve, as per usual, just like how they did in the past, when they blamed consumers for piracy and left the market.

  2. #based

i love seeing all the store fanboys rage over this and that. funny, pc used to laugh at console wars. the console kiddies now laugh at store wars. lol pathetic.

      1. Welp, had enough of that asshat, that I’ve had to add him to the block list. Surprised it only took 3 years to reach this point.

  3. The reality is…the majority of general population is mindless sheep now! Whether it may supporting EGS, be a SJW, or giving up privacy on social media in exchange for a few secs of self-gratification!

    1. I don’t think epic cares about anyone from here not giving them their piggybank change. they’re still going to make millions off of this.

  4. I wonder if this hostage-taking strategy of the Epic store making so many games exclusives is turning out any good for them. I, for one, hate them more every time I see a game that’s announced as exclusive to them. Not a chance I’m spending a dime with them until they switch the strategy.

    1. When they switch the strategy, no one will buy a game, because every game will be on Steam, Just like its already happening on every other Store.

        1. A very pertinent point. GoG only just about broke even in the last financial year so I expect they may now be suffering badly from what EGS is doing. Without CDPR’s upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 to help keep CDP’s finances ticking over it wouldn’t surprise if EGS signalled the death of GoG.

  5. “the team is self-funding the game and needed additional financial assistance. As such, the Epic Games Store deal made a lot of sense to them as it can now focus on creating the game.”

yes becuase kick starter doesnt exist

    1. This is true and also don’t forget Publishers for they are always are an option too.

Maybe Epic is passing on millions though and that sort of goal on KS is pretty hard to achieve with a video game. Still I would think they could do at least do 2 million on KS if not more since they are considered a high profile IP. Having said that if it was like 10 million no strings attached in comparison to a Publisher’s deal I can see why so many jump on it. With KS you really never know how it will turn out.

      Who knows.

    2. or fig/patreon, or other publishers, or bank loans etc.

I like how, once EG started handing out cash, they are somehow seen as the only known figure in existence, that can fund a dev team.

  6. agree and disagree. people can do what they want with their money.

I don’t really care what epic does with their money. Sony buys out exclusives too.
and just bought out Insomniac games. so no more sunset overdrive for steam either.

    1. I think Sony and Nintendo partnerships is a bigger concern than Epic. a high chance either of these companies will never bring their games to pc.

I own both sunset overdrive and bayonetta for steam. their future games stuck on whole other platforms.

    2. Sony buys exclusives for their gaming HARDWARE.

EGS is simply a STORE. It’s not a hardware platform. The PC/Windows/Linux, is the platform.

This would be the equivalent of you being okay with a store having exclusive access to milk, or bread, or something. Why does a STORE need exclusive anything, unless it’s merely trying to force people in to using something, they never would have of their own free will?

      I know, it’s a real nutcracker.

    3. I think Sony is more on board with the epic games store. because of their on going partnerships. If a sequel to sunset overdrive is announced. a possibility it will be on the epic game store.

    4. I think Sony and Nintendo partnerships is a bigger concern than Epic. a high chance either of these companies will never bring their games to pc.

I own both sunset overdrive and bayonetta for steam. their future games stuck on whole other platforms.

  7. This is truly, the era of stupidity. It’s not just in games. Take a real look around sometime, and look at all the mindless drones you are surrounded by on a daily basis. The rest of us, are stuck going along for the ride with these morons.

    1. I agree about the era of stupidity. i can say though, complaining about what a store does with their money isn’t any less stupider.

at the very least you can still play these games on pc. the same can not be said if the game is featured on a whole other platform.

      1. “complaining about what a store sites with they money…” You think that’s what people are doing? You think that’s what the problem is? You are one disingenous b**tard and you are exactly the person we are talking about.
“at the very least you can still play these games” you are a part of the problem you weak pathetic piece of SchiTT. You are disgusting, the typical fox in a hen house. You are exactly the type of stupid, mindless, weak, defeatist individual the OP is talking about. You are gutter trash.

        1. SyberWeapon has a history of posting pro-EGS dumb comments. Pay him no heed. He’s from the same pod as the likes of Fernando Diaz, KIM and Amith Thomas!

      2. Epic’s exclusivity deals affect not just Steam but the rest of the online digital stores out there. When Ubisoft, Microsoft and EA introduced their own stores they didn’t pull the same level of Epic BS and no one complained.

If consoles are considered bad for locking games to their platform then so does Epic for forcing games to be featured on one exclusive store! You could argue that the exclusives are time-limited but pro-EGS guys sees non-EGS users as anti-consumers for opting to wait for the non-EGS releases.

    2. I complain to my girlfriend about this everyday. Poor woman had to sit there and listen to me rant. I apologize afterwards for ranting about sh*t that I can’t change. She says it’s ok, “that’s why I’m with you cause you don’t stand for Bullschit. You fight case your a real man, which the world is lacking these days”. Bless her heart cause I rant about this sh*t everyday. I want to go off the grid or move to some Island at some point. No changing any of this man.

    3. This is what companies like Coca Cola have been working on for decades. Fooling a population long enough, that they become soft in the head and weak minded to crappy practices, paying more for less etc. It’s sad that corps want and actively do this for decades.

  8. “since this is an indie team we’re talking about, we can fully understand and appreciate its decision”
Oh, puh-lease! Spare us the ‘poor indie dev struggling to put food on the table’ routine. Their Oddworld IP has sold circa 8 million units across 18 different platforms and has earned them over 100 industry awards including a Grammy nomination. Their last new game had a budget of $5 million. So spare us the BS false narrative.

“This is a really honest statement”
Not really. It may be less disingenuous than what we’ve seen from certain other devs but is still some way short of being “really honest”. He’s following the EGS script of claiming, with no specifics cited in support, that receiving the money upfront will somehow make their game better in some nebulous unspecified way.

“the team avoided all the mistakes that Glumberland made”
Mistakes of which Tencent Sweeney and the hateful anti-consumer games ‘journalists’ in the shill media publicly supported them over. For shame.

    1. The way they talk they make it sounds like nowadays dev teams have no choice but grab that bag of money otherwise they can’t go any further with the development, when in fact there are many other (even better) dev teams which struggling they finally make their game and then get the well deserved reward, and all this without any shady deal and without selling their anuses. The problem is that there’s no meritocracy anymore, not even in videogames industry, you have a good idea for a videogame but not the funds? Nice, show me (Big SH with cash) what you have in mind and let’s see if you can convince me, but if you can’t convince me, there might always be someone you can convince, and go ahead developing and releasing the game, but under a SH, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, actually, it might be the opposite. You didn’t manage to convince anybody? Nice your game probably sucks fat dongs and you should either change something or change job. Easy, just like it was 10-20 years ago.

      1. What really gets me, is how some devs play the “life is hard” excuse, when in reality, life is hard for a lot of other people, not just devs, and even then, we’ve seen devs struggle with making a game, but end up managing to release and reap the rewards from their hard labour.

Then of course we have these devs, that take the money and claim “it wouldn’t be possible to make this game better, without EGS cash”, and yet here we are, devs not taking the deal and still making great games. If someone can do a better job than others that take the cash, then it simply proves that the shady deal takers cannot do a good job without an insane budget, which also proves that they:

1)refuse to scale back their vision/budget.
        2) Being unable to handle their scope/budget in the first place.

All these devs that take the exclusivity cash prove to me, that they simply cannot handle their own studios and project scopes at all, while devs that do not take the cash can and do a better job of it.

I miss the days when actual competition drove you to doing your best, or simply withering away and rotting for not doing your best. Now all these “lucky” devs have a safety net, like a spoilt rich kid, who will never know failure, because they have a sugar daddy to keep them afloat.

  9. I can’t buy things on Epic store because it doesn’t have regional currency. People don’t “cry” like you think, that store is good for publishers and childs like you but is just bad for customers.

      1. Calling them trolls is giving them too much credit, since they dont actually put any effort into their inane comments. They’re more like village idiots, just here for the entertainment of the rest of us.

  10. Fortunately or Unfortunately Epic Games still essentially belong to “Americans”, no matter how hard you folks try to distort reality. Chinese company are just “co-owners” at best. Their founders are Americans, their CEOs are Americans, the major shareholders are still Americans, Epic Games is American company registered in America and have to obey US laws, same as EA. Tim Sweeney is also American. Sorry to break your ill-informed mindless bubble. But if you’re implying “Americans” are worse evil, I have no opinion about that.

    1. Tencent owns %40 shares of Epic Games. That’s a huge chunk. Tencent also has massive shares in multiple Hollywood studios as well. They also own co own property around California and other parts of US. If you actually do some digging you would know that. And yes people have a legitimate reason to worry about a Chinese company putting so much money/interest in American companies and properties.

I don’t know if you been under a rock. But China is forcefully changing Hong Kong to communism and have their navy stationed near Taiwan, which has them scared as well. So yes again.. people have a legitimate reason for being critical and fearful.

I think you should get out of your “bubble” of just caring about the latest electronic tech. And inform yourself about the world around you.

    2. Hmmm sorry but, YOU seem’s to be the “miss-informed” here. Please go read about Tencent who own 40% of Epic. This disgusting communist shareholding company who is litterally affiliate to the Chinese gov…

    3. You say this as though being an “American” company, is a good thing. The worst entities in gaming, are mostly “American”, with one or two Japanese, and one in particularly gross European company.

In any case, doesn’t change the fact of what Tommy Law there said either. However, being an “American” company, isn’t exactly anything to be proud of these days. USA is the best example of corrupt capitalism in the world, and they’re equally disgusting in other ways to the Chinese.
