New 16GB Texture Pack for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion improves all textures by 4X times

Last month, we informed you about a Texture Pack for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion that overhauled all of its textures to 4K and 8K resolution. And today, we are presenting you another Texture Pack using AI techniques (ESRGAN to be more precise) that improves all textures by 4X times and weights around 16GB in size.

This Texture Pack was created by modder ‘kartoffels’ and includes normal maps for all textures (though it does not include any parallax maps). According to the modder, all of the architecture, armor, characters, clothes, clutter, creatures, dungeons, landscape, oblivion realm, plants, rocks, sky, trees, water, weapons and wood textures have been overhauled.

Now while the zipped files are around 16GB in size, the uncompressed folder is 21GB (so make sure to have enough space if you are interested in these new more detailed textures).

Those interested can download this new AI-enhanced Texture Pack from here. The modder has included a “2X” version of his pack, though we strongly suggest downloading the “4X” version that has been uploaded in numerous parts.

In order to showcase the improved textures, kartoffels released some comparison screenshots that you can find below. Vanilla screenshots are on the left whereas the modded screenshots are on the right.

Have fun!

        1. It ain’t worth even 10gb. Let alone 21gb. Half-Life 2 Cinematic mod has 50gb and it’s a complete remaster of the game, with all 4k textures. And this one 21gb for some barely improved textures?

  1. Anything that improves this game is awesome.
Happy to see people working on this game yet.

  2. One day, when i got my ps4 pro, i finally decided to buy skyrim, for only 20-30 bucks, i think, saying, OK, i want to try this game. .. +300 hours, thousands of great quests. ..see a spot on the map, you can go there. .. the game should keep me entertained, for many hours, specially because i love games like witcher 3… and other huge open world games. ..

And so i downloaded it… and started playing it…

And i was like, wow. ..what the phok are these graphics ?
Fallout4 already had absolutely horrendous visuals, textures so compressed, that we could barely distinguish what it was supposed to represent…ugly, compressed, flat textures, to represent and replace 3d objects….

… but skyrim…. ohhh man, SKYRIM…. it was insane. Many ps2 games looked far better than skyrim, i could swear. .

Everything was so ugly, so compressed… that it really hurt the eyes. Characters with square faces, 3d objects, mountains, enemies, animals. .. it was really a nightmare. . Really painful, to look at those things.

And so i decided to quit, delete it.. and bye bye. No way i could stand playing with such visuals, for 9 or 10 hours. . Let alone 300 or 400 hours. .. !

Despite slightly improving the ps4 engine, with better god rays and lights, and a few tweaks here and there, even , i think, upsampling the overall graphics to higher resolutions. .. it was disgusting to look at.

The only thing that skyrim needed, but didn’t get, was a freaking hd textures pack !

I can’t accept playing a game on a system as a ps4 pro, and barely be able to look at the graphics… everything being so damn compressed and ugly…

Yes, the story is important… but so are graphics. And skyrim graphics, were. . Truly disgusting, awful.

It’s like gta5 on pc… modds must spend years, recreating all the assets, to finally offer hd textures packs… BUT WHY can’t the studios themselves do that ?

I mean, rockstar have ALL the gta5 assets, 3d models… available at 4k…8k…16k… they can export models with 1 million polygons. . 5…30…

Why couldn’t bethesda simply release all the skyrim textures, etc, at max size.. even if the pack weighted 100 or 150 gb, at the end. . Up to gamers to have a powerful enough computer to run it.

Was it so hard, for bethesda to pay a few thousand dollars to Sony, to release a skyrim update..and release a 20 or 30 gb textures pack, for the ps4 version ?
    Was it soooo complicated ?

It’s sure, i will never play skyrim for 300 hours, while having 150 headaches.

    1. Skyrim, on PC back when it released, *did* get a HD texture pack. The original release was even more hideous.

  3. For that…look elsewhere!
All we are getting here is 4x the disk space usage and 1.10x the upscaling!
