Marathon delayed, does not have a new release date

Bungie’s Marathon was supposed to come out this September. However, Bungie has decided to indefinitely delay it. This means that Marathon does not have a release date right now. So, my guess is that it will be delayed by six months or one year, at least.

Marathon had an Alpha Test earlier this year, and the response from those who have played it was Mixed. While there was something interesting there, the game had a lot of issues and felt lackluster. This prompted Bungie to delay the game so that it could focus on improving it.

In my opinion, this was the best decision to make. Releasing a GaaS like Marathon after what happened with Suicide Squad and CONCORD would have been a huge mistake. Because, like it or not, first impressions matter. And, if a GaaS does not manage to capture its fans at launch, it will be very difficult to win them back via post-launch updates.

Bungie has listed the things that it will be focusing on. And, as you will see, these are things that will please a lot of those who have been looking forward to it.

For instance, the devs will add more challenging and engaging AI encounters to the game. There will also be more rewarding runs, with new types of loot and dynamic events. Plus, they aim to make the combat more tense and strategic.

Bungie also stated that it plans to increase the game’s visual fidelity. And that’s a good thing IMO. You see, while Marathon had an interesting art style, visually it felt bland. Not only that, but the devs promise to offer a darker tone that delivers on the themes of the original trilogy. Moreover, you can expect more narrative and environmental storytelling to discover and interact with.

Finally, the devs will focus on delivering a better player experience for solo/duos. Again, this is something that should have been present at launch. In fact, all of the things that Bungie announced are important. Thus, I don’t know what gamers would be getting in September if Bungie had not delayed it.

As a single-player fan, I won’t play Marathon when it comes out. Unless it has an interesting campaign mode. I doubt it since this is an extraction shooter, and I hate extraction shooters. Still, those who are fans of the genre – and of Bungie – will be happy with what the devs have stated.

Again, this is the best decision Bungie and Sony have taken. If they put more effort into it, Marathon may not turn into another CONCORD.

Stay tuned for more!

        1. All of them, that's why he said "generic", it takes the base elements of all the other extraction shooters and instead of adding to them they've removed things to streamline the experience.
Visually it obviously looks nothing like the others.

          1. that seems like a weak criticism because you can apply that to any genre. the marathon setting was the entire reason specifically to play this one. Im not sure what it was supposed to do different from a hunt or tarkov besides that.

          2. This might be the first time I've ever seen/hear someone say the setting was the entire reason to play a game. To each their own I suppose.

          3. I purchased necromunda and boltgun just because they were shooters in the 40k universe, maybe that's just my own folly then lol.

          4. Sure but those are existing franchises with entire bookshelves worth of lore, as far as I'm aware Marathon bares little connection to the original series outside of the name.

          5. ahh, I didnt think that would be the case if they were going to digging up the property after all this time. I thought it was going to be about uncovering the lore from those previous titles.

          6. I think it will have some nods to the original trilogy, but my guess is it will be pretty minimal. As an OG marathon on the mac fan, I was pretty excited when it was first announced. Not so much anymore. hopefully I'm wrong

    1. Regarding what you said:

"the marathon setting was the entire reason specifically to play this one."

      +

"maybe that's just my own folly then lol."

You are not alone. For me, environments DO play a big part in a game's appeal for me, in fact, I already have an entire folder dedicated to environments created long ago.

The games that you mentioned in particular (Marathon & Necromunda) have environments so good that they are the very reason why I want to see what they look like. I didn't play Necromunda yet, but I've been wanting to play it for a long time mostly for its environments.

And regarding Marathon, it indeed looks like a generic extraction shooter just like every other, but its setting, established from the original trilogy, just looks so good.

  1. Years ago I called this game vaporware and said it would flop or never come out. Admittedly I could not have predicted the exact outcome. But you just have to look at the pattern of Bungie releases to understand they simply cannot make games at this point.
They already couldn't make a good Halo game in 2010. Destiny was unfinished, downgraded trash. Destiny 2 was a reskin and also barebones like an alpha, not a real game. Bungie are the bloated corpse of a company that made its last good game in 2007 and its last game in 2010. How could they develop a full game that people want to play? They can't.
With that in mind, it turns out if you steal the entire art direction and let your least sane employees inject their disgusting trans fetish into the work you can make a multiplayer beta that players largely dislike. Very cool! That's as far as you will go with a dead studio like Bungie though. Never forget that players already didn't care for this game before they found out its art was stolen. This is crucial because Sony and Bungie will try to re-write history in the following way:

We made a big mistake with the art theft and that's the sole reason the game was delayed. Now we are atoning for our sin (singular! just one mistake!) by paying the creator or whatever. And we are polishing the game some more. This is our REDEMPTION ARC where you suddenly like the game. IT'S GOOD NOW just like CDPR pretend Cyberpunk is good now. REDEMPTION ARC!

This narrative will be a lie because the game is bad and will still be bad when they present it again. Because Bungie cannot make games since 2010. No refunds, Sony.

    1. They already couldn't make a good Halo game in 2010. Destiny was unfinished, downgraded trash. made its last good game in 2007 and its last game in 2010.

      Shxt take, Reach was great.

  2. God what a joke sony has been this WHOLE generation. I used to be a "fanboi", but theyve released NOTHING new/original. HATE to say it M$oft has been more bold and creative then sony. Redfall and South Midnight are 2 new ips created this Gen where sony has none.
