Halo 5: Forge’s and Forza Horizon 3’s encrypted protection system has been cracked

As we’ve already reported, Halo 5: Forge and Forza Horizon 3 use Microsoft’s new encrypted protection system. Well, good news for all interested in modding these games as this encryption system has been cracked.

While we won’t go into full details and we won’t share links to where you can find ways to crack this new encryption system, we can confirm that PC gamers can run modified files (as can be seen in the following videos. Do note that the creator of these tools is “Infogram” and not “_Atari_”).

In case you weren’t aware of, Halo 5: Forge and Forza Horizon 3 use a new secure encrypted appx format. As such, the files for those games are encrypted and when the user installs these games from the Windows Store, and they get decrypted on-the-fly using the Encrypting File System feature of Windows.

Microsoft implemented this method to protect its future games from piracy, however this new encryption system also affects modding of all games protected by it.

As noted by various users, modders can now read the open processes memory giving them an entrypoint into deciphering how the files inside the apps are arranged and named, something that will hopefully help them mod these – and all future – games.

Some users reported that this protection system was to be blamed for Forza Horizon 3’s performance issues, however there isn’t any proof about such a thing.

For what is worth, there aren’t currently any mods for Forza Horizon 3.

Careful now John. Saying there’s no proof of it will get you lynched and called a shill on this website. Everyone knows if someone says one thing without proof then it is fact according to the people who comment on this site.

    1. Pretty sure this new encryption system was only used on these 2 games since I don’t recall it being mentioned when QB was released and then promptly cracked.

      1. I never said it was used on other titles. QB was never cracked. It just didn’t crash when you had a invalid license unlike for example GoW UE.

    2. The sea is red.

      *looks out the window*

      Nope. Hm. Weird.

      I thought I was God ๐Ÿ™

      Wait – I’M NOT GOD?!

      Oh. Well, that’s awkward.

    1. “stupid pc gamers LOL”

DAMN YOU PC GAMERS GRRR I AM SO ANGRY, FOR SOME REASON, YOU ALWAYS RUIN MY PLANS GRRRR.

      Cry some more kiddo.

    2. Like Capcom cancelled their future PC plans ? they made a stupid security driver for SFV, PC gamers sent them a clear message and they not only apologized but also removed it within 24 hours. What’s sad is that you console peasants can’t even convey your messages to either Microsoft or Sony because you’re used to of being sissy slaves and accepting whatever they throw at you.

We PC gamers like to inform developers/studios what they are doing wrong and we do so proudly and MS badly need PC share right now otherwise why every AAA trash box exclusive is coming to PC ? Recore, Forza, Gears of War, Quantum Break are few examples, still can’t forget the taste of tears when they announced Quantum Break for PC lol.

      Go cry somewhere else.

    3. PC gamers are for the most part much smarter than console players. those of us that build our own systems have to learn about tech, how it interacts with other components, clock speeds, socket compatibility, core count, hyper threading if thats applicable, overclocking, vram amount and why its important, resolution and framerates, input delay timing, etc. so go ahead console pleb, tell me how you know about your stupid overpriced box that you buy like a sheep

  2. That’s what you get for your insatiable greed and having distrust of your potential customers, Macrohard.

Your encryption skill level is clearly way below 9000.

    Try harder.

        1. What makes you think I like the Windows Store, you stupid c*nt? I’m neither for or against the Windows Store. I’m saying you either buy the game or don’t play it at all. Learn to read, assuming they provide primary education in the sh!thole you come from.

          1. again if you love windows store kiss MS a$$$$$$$$
My apologies its my opinions if you dont like it dont replay to my comment sry if i was rude

          2. Tch tch.. “If” I love, right? That’s a big “if”.

Well here’s a little pointer. Regardless of how you feel about the Windows Store, you’re a filthy c*nt and a thief. Little to do with stores and more to do with your sh!thole mentality. And that’s my opinion which might just as well be a fact. Now go stick a shawarma up your a$$$$$$$$, ahbeh.

          3. shawarma yammy yammy do you eat taboule
My apologies if that was a little harsh. Don’t be so rude next time, please. ๐Ÿ˜€

    1. I don’t want to have Steam installed on my computer. Should I pirate 80% of all release AAA games today?

      1. Why wouldn’t you have Steam on your computer though? It’s literally zero hassle.

Tying stuff in with Microsoft sucks a ton. I made a new Microsoft account (after my other one can’t be recovered through their asinine recovery process) and linked it with my PC to get access to the store and from then on my PC had to log into it in order to get into my computer. This also delayed the startup of many programs causing my mouse sensitivity to be borked for a good minute.
Long story short, I unlinked the accounts and now will not use that garbage store.

  3. Even if the encryption bypassed, forza Horizon 3 use always online methods. And it’s seems no one care.

    1. why should i care? i live in an age where internet is necessary. plus, forza horizon 3 is an absolute legit game.

      1. That’s hilariously ignorant. Internet is necessary for the day to day industry (banks, hospitals etc) to function. A game is NOT dependent on internet.

Doesn’t matter how amazing the game is, don’t really understand your point. DRM hurts the consumer way too often.

    2. No it doesn’t. I’m the guy who made the video. It only has to be online for the startup as that is when it grabs the decryption key over the internet. Once you are in game you can safely disconnect from the internet.

    1. Why? You must know that this isn’t first or last bug in Windows security. In last few years every time when someone find another hole in system security few days later MS create a security patch and install it on all PC

BTW: All security patches are mandatory in Windows 10.

      1. Yeap, & the best part of it all? Regardless of how broken they are, unlike the last 20+ years, you can no longer hold off on updating to them!

        Nice, huh.

          1. Sure, but that’s a 3rd party’s creation, which most Win 10 adopters will never even hear about. Without using “non-Microsoft approved tweaks” you’re stuck in the sewer pipe, rolling down into the giant pile of sh*t waiting for you around the next corner along with everybody else “in the name of greater cont- ehm, security.”

Nice mod though, I’ll keep that in mind.

P.S. “Disable Cortana” – nice! It also disables all those irritating info streams to Microsoft that Microsoft’s own settings allegedly disable, even though they actually don’t, apparently…. O.o

Does it also get rid of all the Start Menu gunk? Giant ribbon menu’s?

          2. I don’t give two shรฏts about the masses. Most of them will never care, if you need to tweak something you can always find a tool made by users, it’s futile to complain and expect MS to do anything.

        1. you actually can stop yourself from recieving updates or giving yourself back the control to decide if you want them or not. all you have to do is edit the group policy for windows update. i did it and now when windows wants to update it tells me and i am then made aware of it, and then ignore it. havent installed an update in months. and will continue to not

  4. So… they really f@โ‚ฌยฃed tons of paying customers for what? 4 days protection against piracy? That is sad. Drm is the cancer of the industry.
Plus win store is a mess. I think that i can download a torrent in… 4 hours maybe? Win store can take 2 days. Its uber crap
I feel really bad cuz i wanna play this game. But i dont wanna deal with that store.
Please tell me they already implemented a download speed indicator….

        1. My experience with steam drm is so good that its like drm free for me. Plus i can download all my games in the same day that i start downloading it. Amazing.
I can PAUSE my downloads if my wife need something from the net, and i can RESUME it if i want it. And I DONT NEED TO DOWNLOAD ALL THE GAME FILES AGAIN
Plus… this is real good, you are gonna enjoy it, i can actually see my DOWNLOAD SPEED.
Maybe i misunderstood you…. but are you telling me: steam=ms store?
          Drm steam=drm ms store?
The hell is happening today on dsogaming… im reading the dumbest comments ever.
If you want to respond something that stupid… say it on the mirror first. Maybe, just maybe you can see how dumb it is.

          1. Don’t no what OP is telling you, but I’m saying it’s all store clients that are worse than DRM.
As for pausing downloads, my browser does that just fine, add a download manager if you want more control and speed, that doesn’t run in the background, when I play, stealing power I want the game to use.

Never mind the problems forced updates cause my modded games, which is the biggest issue I have with Steam, specifically. Instead of simply waiting a few days, to update, until the mods are patched, the game is broken, whilst they also get updated.

        2. Already doing that, I detest store clients, and that includes GOG Galaxy.
GOG provide an offline installer, which is more important than, being DRM free, which is very important.
Single player needs no client, and no bolt-on multi-player is worth using a store client for.
True multi-player needs a dedicated in game client, not a crappy generic store.

Store clients provide nothing I want, and GOG gives me all I want.

  5. The game isn’t properly cracked. The actual game won’t load. The most you can do is edit the splash screen. It crashes soon after.

  6. But Recore not yet! It must be use Denuvo! Heh not even microrost can beat denuvo! If both games were using denuvo then they wouldnt have been cracked like Deus ex mankind divided mirror edge catalyst and many other denuvo games that has not been cracked

    1. Mankind Divided is cracked, get with the times, shill. As is ReCore, for that matter. Only problem is, neither of them are worth downloading in the first place! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ Well, Mankind Divided will be, future-tense, once they do a Director’s Cut, but that’s about it.

Oh, btw, these are cracked too; Battlefront, Division, Hitman, DOOM (properly), Just Cause 3, FIFA 17 – yeah, OK I’m just going to stop now, before I give you a heart attack. Regardless, point being; Deadnuvo is dead. Long Live Freedom!

          1. Yup (well don’t know about the site) ๐Ÿ˜€ Doom is legit, just cause 3 and deus ex are fake.

          2. SEE? Dues ex and Just cause 3 and Mirror edge cataly and far cry primal and Fifa 17 has not been cracked.I already visit that site some days ago ti is fake. I do my reseah. Evry day i visit gaming sites and pc sites and i now evrything about pc techology(what cpu and gpus are coming soon e.t.c) and about gaming. And you say Deus ex mankind divided i not worth it? I bought day one. Finished it 5 days later. It was great game.

          3. It’s a gutted mess riddled with issues & DLC teasers around every corner, but I guess people would rather defend their purchases than admit they got duped, eh?

Not to mention those ridiculous microtransactions.

          4. You can add “Mirror’s Edge Catalyst” to the list, it also got cracked last night, lol.

  7. Suck it Mickeysoft. It’s extremely entertaining watching UWP and the store suffer failure after failure. You deserve everything coming to you.

  8. I wonder just how multithreaded any encryption/decompression tasks are.

I’ve played my share of games featuring update installers that took forever and a day because their extraction process was single-threaded ๐Ÿ™

  9. How about fixing the game first Microsoft instead of working hard on crappy DRMs and releasing broken ports ? yes ports, FH3 is just a broke a** port, they lied.
